VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Three Binghamton Bearcats Spring athletes have earned weekly honors in their respective sports.
Rachel Carey – Binghamton SoftballRookie of the Week
Rachel Carey has been named Rookie of the Week. It's the freshman's first time in her young career. In the James Madison Invitational, she batted .412, hitting 3 homers and bringing in 9 RBI's across the 5 games. The Bearcats are next in Mercer for a 3-game series on Friday.
Matt Bolton – Binghamton BaseballRookie of the Week
Matt Bolton has earned Rookie of the Week, and it's his first. He batted .500 in the weekend series against Missouri that the Bearcats split, with at least 2 hits in each game. He also made a game saving highlight reel catch in the bottom of the 10th in a 13-inning win against the Tigers that kept them in it. The Bearcats host Holy Cross Friday for a weekend series.
Matthew Rincon – Binghamton Men's LacrosseDefensive Player of the Week
Matthew Rincon has been named the America East Defensive Player of the Week. It's the first time in his career he has earned a weekly accolade. In the junior's two previous games, he collected 11 ground balls and caused 4 turnovers. The team is next in action for a conference matchup on the road Friday against UMass Lowell.

Meidroth later scored as part of a three-run rally, but the Sox couldn't complete the comeback in a 7-5 loss to the Kansas City Royals in front of 22,137 on Sunday at Rate Field. 'Great example of continuing to battle,' manager Will Venable said. The Vargas home run gave the Sox a 2-0 lead. Salvador Perez tied it with a two-run home run in the fourth against Mike Vasil, who made his first major-league start. Jonathan India put the Royals ahead in the seventh with an RBI double. Maikel Garcia collected an RBI single later in the inning, making it 4-2. India drove in another run in the ninth with a single. Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run home run in the inning, extending the Royals' lead to 7-2. The first five batters reached in the bottom of the ninth as the Sox chipped away at the deficit. They loaded the bases with two outs, but Carlos Estévez struck out Tim Elko to end the game. 'We didn't get the result we wanted, but it's good that we fought through the whole game,' Vargas said. The Sox (22-44) settled for taking two out of three in the series. Here are three takeaways from Rate Field. The Sox scored five runs in the eighth inning of Friday's 7-2 victory, which included a two-run single by Luis Robert Jr. Edgar Quero provided an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of Saturday's 4-1 win. Sunday, the late offensive production came in the ninth. Trailing by five runs, Mike Tauchman led off the inning with a walk against reliever Trevor Richards. Singles by Meidroth and Andrew Benintendi followed. Vargas drew a bases-loaded walk. Quero greeted Estévez with an RBI single, making it 7-4. A few hours later, he was on the mound for the Sox. 'Today has been a whirlwind,' Alexander said. The Sox signed the left-hander to a one-year, $760,000 deal on Sunday. 'Signing at noon, then an hour and a half (rideshare trip) from Milwaukee to here, then bullpen in the third inning and pitching in the fourth inning,' Alexander said. 'My first time doing all of that, but it was — try to keep a level head and not freak out too much.' Alexander allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings. He entered with one out in the fourth, following Vasil. 'We had been talking to the White Sox prior to today so we knew that if I signed, there would be a good chance of me throwing today,' Alexander said. 'So mentally, I had prepared for it. 'Just try to go with the flow and I had faced the Royals already this year. I have a little cheat sheet scouting reports that I've been reading over. I was prepared to the best of my ability.' Alexander, 30, went 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 21 games (four starts) with the Milwaukee Brewers this season before being designated for assignment on June 1. He's pitched for the Detroit Tigers (2019-23), Tampa Bay Rays (2024) and Brewers (2025). 'The guy literally just shows up and steps right into an outing, which is impressive,' Venable said. 'And I think that just speaks to what's attractive about him, which is the guy's been around, a nice mix from the left side, can pitch in multiple different roles.' In Sunday's corresponding moves, the Sox placed reliever Jared Shuster on the 15-day injured list with a blister on his left hand. His stint is retroactive to Thursday. To make room for Alexander on the 40-man roster, the Sox transferred left-hander Fraser Ellard to the 60-day injured list. Ellard has been on the IL since May 4 with a left lat strain. The youth movement continued for the Sox during the weekend with Kyle Teel's promotion to the majors. The 23-year-old catcher went 1-for-2 with two walks in his debut on Friday and collected two more hits as a designated hitter on Saturday. 'With Kyle, I've seen him play in a B game on a backfield in spring training and then playing that game (Friday) night, and he brought the same energy and focus to both types of environments,' Venable said before Saturday's game. Teel went 0-for-2 Sunday. The Sox got a lift offensively from Quero, also a rookie catcher, with his RBI single in the ninth. The plan is for the pair to split time behind the plate. 'I think that we're lucky that these guys are special players,' Venable said. 'Certainly they need support and help, but they go out there and they're capable and have the capacity to do a lot of the things that we're asking them to do. Credit to those guys for being outstanding players.'

George Kirby strikes out career-high 14, Mariners beat Angels 3-2 to snap their 5-game skid
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — George Kirby struck out a career-high 14 during seven innings of two-hit ball, and the Seattle Mariners snapped their five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Kirby (1-3) issued no walks while retiring both his first 11 and his final 10 batters. His strikeouts were the most by a Mariners pitcher since James Paxton had 16 in May 2018 , and he matched Miami's Max Meyer for the most strikeouts in a major league game this season. Tri-Village wins program's first state title
AKRON, Ohio (WDTN) – Tri-Village softball won the program's first-ever state championship Sunday after defeating Sugarcreek Garaway 6-0 in the final. It was the Patriots' first trip to the state final since 1980. Emma Greet led the way at the plate for the Patriots, going 2-3 with an RBI base hit. Elizabeth Poling tossed a dime for Tri-Village, pitching the complete-game shutout with just three hits given up and striking out three.
