Former trainer Peter Easterby dies aged 95
He was succeeded by his son, Tim, while his brother Mick still shares a licence today with his own son, David, with many other members of the family involved in racing.
Tim Easterby announced on X: 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my father Peter Easterby.
'He passed away peacefully in his own home with his family by his side.
'A true gentleman, legendary racehorse trainer, passionate farmer, lover of country sports and an incredibly proud father and grandfather.'
Sea Pigeon and Night Nurse were both dual Champion Hurdle winners, while Easterby also won two Gold Cups with Alverton in 1979 and Little Owl in 1981.
Proving his versatility, Easterby also sent out Sea Pigeon to win the Ebor off top weight and the Chester Cup twice, while Night Nurse finished second to Little Owl in the Gold Cup, narrowly failing to become the first horse to win the two biggest prizes at the Cheltenham Festival.
Saucy Kit was another Champion Hurdle winner in 1967 for Easterby and for a time his five wins in the race were a record.
His notable Flat triumphs included the Kings's Stand Stakes with Goldhill, the Gimcrack with Sonnen Gold, two Lincolns and three Ayr Gold Cups.
Easterby sent out over 2,500 winners during his lengthy career and Tim Easterby is still based at Habton Grange.

He's the one for me. LAMBOURN goes in the St Leger trial, the Group 2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur, although the Arc de Triomphe might be more his ultimate target. I'm not opposing the short-priced favourite. O'Brien's colt has done little wrong this season, following up his Epsom success with victory, albeit far from impressive, in the Irish equivalent. On ratings he has achieved miles more than most of these, and while some of course are open to improvement he should take all the beating again under Moore. ITALY goes in the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb for colts and geldings. O'Brien surely knows where he is with big rival Distance Storm having sent out the horse who got closest to the unbeaten Godolphin runner at Newmarket 40 days ago. A son of Wootton Bassett, Italy looked very good on debut but ultimately was beaten by Godolphin's Saba Desert in the Group 2 Superlative. That, of course, means Charlie Appleby has a strong guide too! I'm sticking with Italy mainly because he has that bit more experience and I was left thinking he wasn't quite at his best in the Superlative. More Moore. ITV Racing start at York with a handicap over an extended 5f. TREFOR ran an absolute cracker at Windsor the other day suggesting he's bang in form for Charlie Hills. My selection can run off 1lb lower here and his traveling pace should stand him in good stead on this track. He's only run here once before and didn't do well, but on that occasion he hung badly left and just wasn't himself even though the vet found no issues. Kieran Shoemark takes the ride. Finally on telly there is a handicap over an extended 2m. A huge chance this for ALPHONSE LE GRANDE to outstay his rivals for Tony Martin and William Buick. The Cesarewitch winner has not been disgraced in 2025, running twice with a pipe opener at the Curragh follow by an eighth in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting. This is not a strong renewal in my book and he has a great chance to score if there is any sort of pace at all. Good luck! Seagulls Eleven, a three-year-old gelding trained by Hugo Palmer who cost around £50,000, has won two of his ten career races, bringing in just shy of £170,000. But his next few races could send his winnings into the stratosphere. Seagulls Eleven, who won more than £57,000 with his most recent victory, a Group 3 at Goodwood earlier this month, is one of 13 in the City Of York. He is likely to face Group 1 scorer Rosallion and 150-1 record winner Qirat, who returns after his unbelievable Sussex Stakes victory. Big names including John & Thady Gosden's former Lockinge winner Audience and Juddmonte's Cosmic Year are also in the line-up. But the races under a mile have been a lottery this season so anything could happen when they jump out this weekend. And while the cheque on offer at York is massive - far, far greater riches could lie in wait later this year. After his Goodwood win, Palmer said the £7.4million Golden Eagle in Australia in November was on the agenda. Interestingly, Brighton owner Tony Bloom won the race last year with Lake Forest and walked off an incredible £2.8m richer. Palmer said after Seagulls Eleven won at Goodwood that he would likely be supplemented for the City Of York. And the plan then would be, rather than race at Doncaster and Ascot later this year, to enter quarantine ahead of a trip Down Under. Speaking of how it all came about, Palmer, who trains football legend Michael Owen's horses, said: "It actually all started at Cheltenham. "There was a mare called Mrs Milner and Michael suggested to James Milner that he back it. "He did and it went from there. "They've bought a few horses and James is the ringleader. There are eleven players, who aren't all at Brighton anymore." Goalkeeper Jason Steele is another involved with Seagulls Eleven - and he can't wait to see what the future holds. He said: "It is up to Hugo and the team at Manor House Stables if he goes out to Australia, but the thought of him running there is amazing. "We have briefly spoken about it in our group chat and Hugo is going to find out more and whatever they want to do, I imagine the lads will support it. "We have a lot of ties with the Golden Eagle with our chairman Tony Bloom winning it last year with Lake Forest. "That would be a nice story to go over there and follow that up. 'To say we have owned a horse that has already run at the Curragh, and in America, and potentially Australia is unbelievable."
