Asian markets cheer as pause in US-China trade war boosts risk appetite

Zawya13-05-2025

TOKYO: Asian stocks joined the global rally and the U.S. dollar held on to most of its gains on Tuesday as investors heaved a sigh of relief after a temporary halt in the trade war between the U.S. and China eased worries of a global recession.
Japan's Nikkei soared 2%, touching its highest level since February 25, and tech-heavy Taiwan also rose 2%, while Chinese stocks inched higher in early trading.
That left the MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan at a six-month peak. The S&P 500 rose over 3% while Nasdaq soared 4.3% after the U.S. and China agreed to slash tariffs for at least 90 days.
"The real win here was the shift in tone from both the U.S. and China. Words like 'mutual respect' and 'dignity' mark a sharp departure from the recent confrontational rhetoric, and that's what markets are cheering," said Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo in Singapore.
The U.S. said it will cut tariffs imposed on Chinese imports to 30% from 145% while China said it would cut duties on U.S. imports to 10% from 125%, providing relief to the markets, although concerns linger that tariffs could hurt the global economy.
The U.S. dollar surged against the yen, euro and Swiss franc immediately after the agreement was announced but on Tuesday morning was slightly weaker, holding on to most of its gains.
Some analysts highlighted the uncertainty caused by the tariffs that remain in place.
"A de-escalation was inevitable and I think it's clear there won't be much durable that comes out of these talks," said Christopher Hodge, chief U.S. economist at Natixis.
"When all is said and done, tariffs will still be dramatically higher and will weigh on U.S. growth."
Ratings agency Fitch estimated that the U.S. effective tariff rate is now 13.1%, a notable decline from 22.8% prior to the agreement but still at levels last seen in 1941 and much higher than the 2.3% it was at the end of 2024.
U.S. INFLATION TEST
Investor focus will now switch to details of the agreement and what happens after 90 days but before that the spotlight will be on U.S. inflation data later on Tuesday.
"Should we be treated to another set of soft CPI figures, it could allow traders to refocus on Fed policy and the potential for cuts, and take some steam out of the dollar's rebound," said Matt Simpson, senior market analyst at City Index.
The shift in U.S.-China trade relations has led traders to pare back bets of Federal Reserve rate cuts, inferring that policymakers are likely to be under less pressure to ease interest rates to boost growth.
Traders are now pricing in 57 basis points of cuts this year, down from over 100 basis points during the height of tariff-induced anxiety in mid-April.
U.S. Treasury yields rose to a one-month high on Monday and were hovering near that level in early trading on Tuesday. The two-year yield was at 3.9873%, while the benchmark 10-year yield was last at 4.4512%.
In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin eased 0.5% to $102,146 on Tuesday but remained above the key $100,000 level it breached last week.
Oil prices eased a bit on Tuesday after hitting a two-week high in the previous session on trade deal optimism, while gold prices were steady after dropping 2% on Monday as investors exited some of the safe havens.

China solar industry to address overcapacity challenge but turnaround far off, experts say

Solar manufacturing company heads in China, grappling with losses and tariffs on exports to the U.S., called for an end to a price war and a solution to overcapacity in the sector, but industry participants predict a slow turnaround. China's solar manufacturers have reported losses this year as U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war put further pressure on demand within the industry. Losses in the photovoltaic manufacturing value chain reached $40 billion last year, while for the industry as a whole - including firms' other business lines - totalled $60 billion, Trina Solar Chairman Gao Jifan said. The Chinese government and industry were working to address the overcapacity and breakneck competition that have pushed most major producers into the red, Gao told the SNEC PV+ Photovoltaic Power Conference and Exhibition in Shanghai this week. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's state planner, held an online meeting in February calling for a ban on new production, Gao said, but new capacity has nevertheless been built in recent months. NDRC did not immediately respond to a faxed question on the matter. Zhu Gongshan, chairman of polysilicon and module producer GCL, called for a "clear out" of the sector through mergers and a paring back of production capacity. China was also moving away from reliance on a single market, Zhu said, referring to growth in new markets outside China in response to tariffs and other trade barriers. Chinese manufacturers have been rapidly expanding in the Middle East, and a module-producing firm said demand is set to grow in eastern Europe and South Asia. Solar manufacturing makes up less than two-thirds of Trina's business now and will fall to 50% or less in the next two to three years, Gao said, with a greater focus on product solutions and energy storage. Several experts told Reuters during this week's industry event that there is no hope for recovery in solar component prices this year. One procurement manager at a module producer in eastern China said two or three large factories would have to stop production for supply and demand to rebalance and support prices, unlikely in the near future. "The overcapacity issue is so deep one cannot see to the bottom," another module producer, using a Chinese proverb.

India moves to conserve its rare earths, seeks halt to Japan exports, sources say

India has asked state-run miner IREL to suspend a 13-year-old agreement on rare earth exports to Japan and to safeguard supplies for domestic needs, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, aiming to reduce India's dependence on China. IREL also wants to develop India's capacity for rare earth processing, which is dominated globally by China and has become a weapon in escalating trade wars. China has curbed its rare earth materials exports since April, pressuring automakers and high-tech manufacturers worldwide. In a recent meeting with auto and other industry executives, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal asked IREL to stop its exports of rare earths, mainly neodymium, a key material used in magnets for electric vehicle motors, one of the sources said. The Commerce Ministry, IREL and the Department of Atomic Energy, which oversees IREL, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The sources declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter. Under a 2012 government agreement, IREL supplies rare earths to Toyotsu Rare Earths India, a unit of Japanese trading house Toyota Tsusho, which processes them for export to Japan where they are used to make magnets. In 2024, Toyotsu shipped more than 1,000 metric tons of rare earth materials to Japan, commercially available customs data showed. That is one-third of the 2,900 tons mined by IREL, although Japan relies mainly on China for its rare earths supply. Toyota Tsusho and Toyotsu did not immediately respond to requests for comment. IREL has been exporting rare earths due to a lack of domestic processing capacity, but following the recent disruptions to supplies of Chinese material it wants to keep its rare earths at home and expand domestic mining and processing, a second source said, adding that IREL is awaiting statutory clearances at four mines. However, India may not immediately be able to stop supplies to Japan because they fall under a bilateral government agreement, the person said. IREL wants this to be "amicably decided and negotiated because Japan is a friendly nation", the person added. Japan's Trade Ministry said in a statement to Reuters: "We would like to refrain from answering questions about bilateral exchanges in general, not just about this matter." EXPANSION PLANS China's recent export controls on rare earth materials have rocked the global auto industry, which has warned of supply chain disruptions and production halts. China also weaponised its supplies in 2010, when it briefly stopped shipments to Japan. That prompted the Japanese to turn to India for rare earths. India has the world's fifth-largest rare earth reserves, at 6.9 million metric tons, but there is no domestic magnet production. India relies on imported magnets, mainly from China. In the fiscal year to March 2025, India imported 53,748 metric tons of rare earth magnets, government data showed. These are used in automobiles, wind turbines, medical devices and other manufactured goods. Rare earth mining is restricted to IREL, which supplies India's Atomic Energy Department with materials for nuclear power projects and defence-related applications. India lacks wide-scale technology and infrastructure to mine rare earths, and the development of any commercially viable domestic supply chain is years away, analysts said. IREL has a rare earths extraction plant in the eastern Indian state of Odisha and a refining unit in Kerala, in southern India. The miner, founded in 1950, plans to produce 450 metric tons of extracted neodymium in the fiscal year to March 2026 with a plan to double that by 2030, the second person said. It is also looking for a corporate partner for the production of rare earth magnets for the auto and pharmaceutical industries, the person said. India is firming up plans for incentives to companies to set up rare earth processing and magnet production facilities to meet local demand, people familiar with the matter told Reuters earlier this month.
