Collector expresses concern over growing number of school dropouts in Chittoor
The Collector was addressing a review meeting with mandal education officers (MEOs) and cluster headmasters at the Collectorate here on Thursday.
Sumit Kumar highlighted the imminent need to transform Chittoor into a district with zero dropouts and excellent academic standards. 'As many as 4,447 dropouts were identified this year. School headmasters must visit each child's home, offer a patient hearing to their challenges, and get them back to the classrooms,' he said. He also directed the teachers to 'adopt' dropout students, visit their homes at least five times, counsel the parents, and explain the benefits of education.
'The staff entrusted with the duty of bringing back school dropouts should track the students who studied in 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic year, and confirm they are continuing their studies in 2025–26. Those missing from the classrooms must be re‑enrolled,' Sumit Kumar said.
'Teachers of government schools are capable of imparting quality education to the students. They also hold the potential to address the learning gaps among their students,' he said, adding that this phenomenon helped the government schools in Chittoor district post remarkable improvement in the Class 10 results this year.

Govt teachers extend Rs 50k financial aid to meritorious student
Nandyal: As part of the P4 (People's Participation for Progress) initiative, government teacher mentors have come forward to support a deserving student from an underprivileged family by extending financial assistance of Rs 50,000 towards his hostel fee. The cheque was formally handed over by District Collector G Raja Kumari at the Collectorate, in the presence of the student and his parents on Tuesday. As per the statement of the district Collector the beneficiary, M Rohan Sai, hails from a poor goldsmith family residing in Kranti Nagar, Bommala Satram, Nandyal town. His father, Marella Ramesh Naidu, has been rendered jobless due to paralysis, while his mother works as a sweeper at a local temple to sustain the family. Despite severe financial hardship, Rohan excelled in academics, securing 94% in his Polytechnic Diploma and successfully clearing the 2025 EAMCET. He was admitted on a merit basis into the second year of at MVR Engineering College, Vizianagaram. However, an annual hostel fee of Rs 50,000 remained a significant burden on the family. Moved by the student's dedication and academic performance, government teachers K Sambasivudu and K Shivakumari, serving as Headmaster at MPPS Nereducherla and Teacher at MPPS Madduru, respectively, voluntarily stepped forward as mentors to adopt the student. They provided the required financial support and assured continued assistance for his hostel fees throughout his course. Appreciating their noble gesture, G Raja Kumari stated that such voluntary support is inspirational and urged financially capable individuals in society to come forward to adopt students from economically weaker backgrounds. She stated that collective efforts through such initiatives can significantly uplift marginalised communities. The event was attended by the donor teachers, the student's family, and other officials.

Chittoor district administration geared up for Kanipakam Brahmotsavams
The district administration is all geared up for the smooth conduct of the 21-day 'Brahmotsavams' at the Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka Swamy temple in Kanipakam, which would be held from August 27 to September 16. Chittoor District Collector Sumit Kumar on Tuesday held a meeting on the arrangements to be made for the event with Superintendent of Police (SP) V.N. Manikanta Chandolu, temple executive officer (EO) Penchala Kishore, Putalapattu MLA K. Murali Mohan and others. Mr. Sumit Kumar said that a coordination committee led by the temple EO with officials of Revenue, Police, Panchayat Raj, Medical and Health and other departments has been formed. The committee was asked to formulate an action plan for the event, he added. The Collector asked the EO, officials of Electricity and Fire Services departments to inspect the power supply situation inside and outside the temple, and ensure that there are no lapses. He asked the officials concerned to remove the bushes on both sides of the road from Chittoor to Kanipakam. Mr. Sumit Kumar also asked the Medical and Health Department to make available expert doctors, medical camps and ambulances to meet any emergencies. The Panchayat officials were asked to maintain hygienic conditions near the temple, set up mobile toilets and make provision for providing safe drinking water to the devotees. The Collector added that Vinayaka Chavithi falling on August 27, Radhotsavam on September 3, Pushpa Pallaki on September 13, Teppotsavam on September 16 will attract huge devotees and asked officials to make fool-proof arrangements to meet the devotee rush. He wanted more RTC buses to the temple town for the convenience of the devotees. Meanwhile, the SP said that a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) rank official would head the security arrangements and CCTV surveillance will be in place for the entirety of the festivities, especially on Radhotsavam day. Focus would be on security in the temple premises, mandapam, Koneru, parking areas and bus stand. A helpdesk will also be set up and the arrangements would be monitored 24X7 through the command control centre, he said. Police will use two drones to monitor the security, the SP said, and asked the temple management to use another two drones for surveillance. He also asked the temple officials to make necessary announcements through the public address system. Consumption of liquor would be prohibited in the areas nearby the temple, while steps would be taken to control the sale of liquor after 8 p.m., he said. The SP asked officials to make available a fire tender for responding quickly to any fire mishaps. Mr. Murali Mohan said that arrangements will be made in coordination with 20 other departments for the smooth conduct of the event. He stressed on maintaining queue lines in a proper manner to provide hassle-free darshan to the devotees.

Nomadic tribal people at Sakkimangalam demand renovation of houses before onset of monsoon
Members of the Narikuravar community – a nomadic tribe included in Scheduled Tribes (ST) – sought renovation of their houses before the onset of monsoon season. Submitting a petition at the Collectorate during the weekly grievance meeting here on Monday, R. Gandhi, one of the residents, said that about 200 houses built in 1991 under the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) scheme had become dilapidated due to improper maintenance. Though the people themselves carried out minor repairs, they have been unable to do major renovation works owing to their economic condition. He said that they had been struggling to reconstruct the houses as the roofs and walls have started crumbling since 2015 itself. As a remedy to the damaged houses, the local body since 2016 has been asking them to stay in the community halls during the monsoon season to avoid any fatal incidents. M. Jaiganesh, a ward member, said that due to their repeated requests, the local administration staff members visited the locality and surveyed the condition of the houses. 'Earmarking 71 houses for reconstruction, they got ration card, community certificate, patta and Aadhaar cards from the residences,' he added. The survey promised that they would be provided houses but again monsoon arrived, and their houses continue to be in a precarious condition, he noted. Even last week, part of the roof of a resident named Pandidurai collapsed. 'As the family were out in a hospital to treat a five-year-old child, all of them escaped,' said Mr. Jaiganesh. If the houses were not renovated or reconstructed at the earliest, they would have to live in continuous fear, he said.
