Orioles GM says he doesn't see panic - but team has plenty of concerns amid slow start
Associated Press
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles and general manager Mike Elias could have used a fast start this year.
Instead, most of their biggest offseason questions are still pertinant.
The Orioles entered Tuesday night's game against Cleveland at 6-9, in last place in the AL East. That's after some second-half struggles in 2024 and a first-round loss to Kansas City in the playoffs. Baltimore still has plenty of talent, but also some real issues — perhaps more than seemed likely after the Orioles won 101 games in 2023 and had a farm system still churning out standout prospects.
'I certainly haven't seen any signs of panic, and we're continuing to retain the same approach on a night-to-night basis. I try not to get too high when things are going great, and try not to get down when we're losing," Elias said Tuesday. 'That's how you have to approach baseball.'
The Orioles lost Corbin Burnes in free agency, and the three main starters they added were all older players on one-year contracts. So there was some skepticism about whether the rotation would hold up.
And that was before the injury bug went to work. Grayson Rodriguez hasn't pitched at all this season, Zach Eflin went on the injured list last week, and Albert Suarez will miss significant time. Plus, neither Kyle Bradish nor Tyler Wells has returned from elbow surgery.
So the new arrivals — Tomoyuki Sugano and Charlie Morton — have needed to perform, and it hasn't gone great. They were a combined 1-4 with a 6.26 ERA entering Morton's start against Cleveland on Tuesday.
'I feel like we've already tapped into, basically, the depth,' Elias said. 'To say that on April 15 was not the plan. Obviously, we knew Bradish was going to be out. But to have Grayson and Eflin on the shelf simultaneously this quickly into the season, at no point were we forecasting that, or expecting that. And that's just the truth.'
Kyle Gibson, the third significant starter added, signed in late March and is in the minors. He's expected back with the Orioles by May. As for Baltimore's brigade of injured pitchers, Elias said Eflin will start playing catch in a few days, Rodriguez has thrown a couple bullpens, and Bradish threw a bullpen recently. Wells is expected to start his mound progression in the next two weeks.

Guardians pitcher narrowly escapes serious injury after 106.6 mph line drive comes right toward his head
Cade Smith was mere inches away from one of the scariest moments that could occur on a baseball diamond. The Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher was on the bump in the bottom of the fifth of a 2-2 game in Seattle against the Mariners when Rowdy Tellez came up to bat. Smith's 88 mph breaking ball caught the lower half of the strike zone, and Tellez, one of the game's harder hitters, barreled one up. Tellez mashed a line drive that came directly back to where it had come from, coming off the bat at a scorching-hot 106.6 mph. With essentially zero time to react, the ball hit the brim of Smith's cap, with the right-hander narrowly escaping a serious injury. With the cap breaking the speed of Tellez's hit, it trickled into the outfield, and it was enough for him to reach second with a double. Smith was completely unfazed, though, as he struck out the next batter to end the inning. Seattle wound up scoring four runs in the seventh inning and taking home a 7-2 victory. Tellez had a scorcher earlier in the game, mashing a homer with an exit velo of 107.3 mph. He has an average exit velocity of 91.3 mph, which ranks in the 80th percentile among qualified hitters. Cleveland fell to 35-33 with the loss, a rather disappointing record up to this point, coming off an AL Central title. They now sit 9.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers. The Mariners, meanwhile, are 4.5 games back of the Houston Astros in the AL West with their 34-34 record. Chuck Pagano's Ravens return doubles as a shot at some unfinished business
Chuck Pagano's Ravens return doubles as a shot at some unfinished business Chuck Pagano's return draws smiles each time it is mentioned, but it may also gist the longtime Raven with some closure. Every glimpse of Chuck Pagano in the Baltimore Ravens' black and purple forces an immediate smile across the countenance. It's like he never left (even though we know he did). He never looked quite right in that Indianapolis Colts gear, nor did he ever look like a Chicago Bears coach. Chuck's home is with the flock. It always has been. He's probably forgotten more about defense than some of these younger coaches will ever know. He has coached for nearly four decades, and he's still going strong. Baltimore recently dropped its look "Inside Rookie Minicamp with Malaki Starks", and the Ravens' secondary coach allowed some behind-the-scenes access. Coach Pagano knows what he's doing, and he knows great defensive talent when he sees it. After all, he once led a unit that featured Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Terrell Suggs. He hasn't paced an NFL sideline since the 2020 NFL season, but it's good to have him back. While he's in town, the Ravens may as well help him handle some unfinished business. Chuck Pagano has an opportunity to win a Super Bowl that he missed out on the last time He's the owner of a coaching resume that many would love to have. His journey began in 1984 as a graduate assistant at USC. Fate eventually led him to Baltimore. Pagano spent three years as the Ravens' secondary coach before assuming the title of defensive coordinator in 2011. That season didn't go as planned. It ended with Billy Cundiff's missed field goal in the AFC Championship Game vs. the New England Patriots. Three days later, Coach Pagano was introduced as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Baltimore would win the Super Bowl one year later, in Ray Lewis and Ed Reed's final season with the team. Chuck still has yet to taste Super Bowl glory. You can see where all of this is headed, right? More than 13 years separate Coach Pagano's exit from his return. This season feels like unfinished business, both for the Ravens and their secondary coach. As he did many moons ago, he's fortunate to have some talent in the secondary. Kyle Hamilton and Marlon Humphrey are his Pro Bowlers. Malaki Starks is the talented rookie. Pagano has never been a stranger to hard work. Starks recently shared a story of his position coach texting him about film at 5 a.m. That's precisely the type of work ethic this team will need to win it all. Two seasons ago, they lost in the AFC Championship Game. A year ago, they were bounced in the Divisional Round. Might this be their year? Let's hope so for the fans, this roster, and some returning friends.
