Prithvi Shaw scores hundred on Maharashtra debut in Buchi Babu Tournament 2025

Prithvi Shaw struck a century in his first innings since switching allegiance from Mumbai to Maharashtra on the second day of the opening round of the Buchi Babu Tournament 2025 in Chennai on Tuesday.
Shaw's hundred against Chhattisgarh came in 122 deliveries and included 14 fours and one six. The former Mumbai opener's knock helped Maharashtra tide over a crisis after the team had lost four wickets for just 15 runs despite a strong 71-run opening stand between Shaw and Sachin Dhas.
The collapse included the wickets of Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Maharashtra skipper Ankeet Bawane, who departed in the space of two overs. Shaw then addded 57 runs for the fifth wicket with Siddharth Mhatre to steady Mahrashtra's innings.
Shaw eventually fell for 111 off 141 balls, stumped by leg-spinner Shubham Agrawal.
The 25-year-old had joined Maharashtra earlier this year amidst concerns around his form and fitness. He had been dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad last season and wasn't picked for its Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign.
Though he was a part of Mumbai's victorious Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign last season, his returns with the bat (197 runs in nine matches) were far from impressive. In November last year, he had also gone unsold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for the first time ever.
Having last represented India in July 2021, Shaw is not anywhere near a national team recall at the moment, but his move to Maharashtra signals his intent to revive his fortunes and be in the reckoning again.
'At this stage of my career, I believe joining the Maharashtra team will help me grow further as a cricketer. I am deeply grateful to the Mumbai Cricket Association for the opportunities and support I have received over the years,' Shaw had said in a statement after joining Maharashtra.
'Maharashtra Cricket Association has made remarkable efforts in recent years to enhance cricketing infrastructure across the state.... I am confident that being part of such a progressive setup will positively impact my journey as a cricketer. I'm happy to get the opportunity to play alongside talented players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Rajneesh Gurbani, and Mukesh Choudhary in the Maharashtra team,' he added.

Prithvi Shaw makes fresh start in Buchi Babu: Don't want anyone's sympathy

India batter Prithvi Shaw has made it clear that he doesn't want anyone's sympathy as he charts his way back into the national reckoning. Determined to start from the basics, the 24-year-old believes in working his way up again — and his fresh journey with Maharashtra has already been boosted by a century in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament.'Don't want anyone's sympathy,' Shaw said firmly, underlining his intent to let his bat do the talking. At Guru Nanak College Ground in Chennai, he delivered a fluent hundred, anchoring Maharashtra's innings against Chhasttisgarh, even as wickets tumbled around admitted that he was ready to climb from the bottom if that's what it takes. 'I don't mind coming from scratch again because I've seen many ups and downs in my life. And I've been up there, I've been down there, I've come back up. So, everything is possible, I feel. I'm kind of a very confident guy, confident in myself, my work ethics. I feel, I hope that this season will go really well for me as well as for my team.'After a period marked by missed India call-ups, going unsold in the IPL, and being dropped from Mumbai's Ranji squad, Shaw's move to Maharashtra is both a reset and a said his approach is to stick to what worked for him in the past.'I don't want to change anything. I just went back to basics, doing things that I used to do in Under-19 days, which got me to the Indian team, just doing all the stuff back again, you know, practicing more, gym, running. It's small things, obviously, it's not that big because I've been doing these things since the age of 12 and 13.'That reset also involves avoiding distractions.'Just trying to be myself and not really trying to be on social media or anything and those kinds of distractions. Nowadays social media, it's quite bad. It's kind of peaceful when I'm not using it. It's always about learning for me. And like I said before, I'm confident enough in myself and what I am.'For Shaw, the focus now is on stacking up consistent performances at the domestic level, hoping that steady runs will open the door for an India recall in the near future.- Ends

Asia Cup: Yashasvi Jaiswal's exclusion from Indian squad surprises Madan Lal

Explosive opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was left out of India's Asia Cup 2025 squad on Tuesday, August 19. The national selectors on Tuesday revealed that they had chosen Shubman Gill ahead of the left-hander. The exclusion of the opener surprised former cricketer Madan Lal, given Jaiswal's stature as a to news agency ANI right after the squad selection announcement, Madan Lal said that match-winners should not be left out of a team. Shreyas Iyer Asia Cup Snub: Has Indian Cricket Become A Closed Club? What More Could Iyer Do to Prove His Worth To Team India?

When the Asia Cup 2025 squad was announced, many fans expected Shreyas Iyer's name to be on the list. Instead, his exclusion raised eyebrows and sparked debates: What more must Iyer do to earn a spot in India's T20 team? The decision seems baffling, given Iyer's outstanding recent record. In IPL 2025, he was among the most destructive batters, amassing 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 the third-best for a batter with 600-plus runs in a season, behind only Chris Gayle (2011) and Suryakumar Yadav (2023). His ability to dominate spinners, finish games, and anchor innings made him the backbone of Punjab Kings' march to the final. Few Indian batters in recent memory have showcased such consistency and flair. A Proven Match Winner Across Formats Iyer's credentials extend beyond one tournament. Over the last two years, he has captained Kolkata Knight Riders to their first IPL title in a decade (2024), taken Punjab Kings to their first final in 11 years, led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and guided SoBo Mumbai Falcons to the Mumbai T20 League final. Even in red-ball cricket, he was part of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup triumphs. Internationally, he contributed to India's Champions Trophy 2025 victory, showing his value across formats. In T20Is too, Iyer's record speaks volumes. Since India's last T20 World Cup win, he has scored 949 runs in 26 matches at an average of 49.94 and a strike rate of 179.73 elite numbers by any standard. His last T20I outing, a gritty 53 against Australia in Bengaluru, was a match-winning knock under pressure. So Why Was Iyer Dropped? Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar summed it up bluntly: 'It's no fault of his (Shreyas). Got to tell me who he can replace? At the moment, will have to wait for his chance.' This statement hints at the real issue: not Iyer's performance, but the crowded Indian batting order. With Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill, and Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma all competing for top and middle-order slots, the selectors seem to have prioritised stability and existing combinations over rewarding form. Another factor could be team balance. Hard-hitters like Hardik Pandya and Rinku Singh bring finishing power, while Axar Patel and Shivam Dubey offer the all-rounder's package. In such a scenario, a pure middle-order batter, no matter how prolific, often becomes the unlucky omission. The Harsh Reality Iyer's omission highlights the brutal competition in Indian cricket, where even stellar form doesn't guarantee selection. For now, his only option is to keep producing runs and wait for an opening. Injuries, loss of form, or rotation policies could pave the way, but as of today, he finds himself in the frustrating position of having 'done everything right' yet still being overlooked. The big question remains: What else does Shreyas Iyer need to do to break into India's T20 squad? Perhaps the answer is not in his control anymore sometimes, timing and circumstances matter just as much as runs and strike rates.
