Playboy twins feared they'd end up dead like Anna Nicole Smith after lives 'crumbled' following 'traumatic' years in Hugh Hefner mansion
In 2008 - and when they were only at the age of 19 - the twins moved into the Playboy mansion and began an 18-month relationship with Hefner, who passed away in 2017.
Back in 2022 in the A&E docuseries Secrets Of Playboy, the sisters - now 35 - detailed how they both contracted chlamydia and Karissa emotionally opened up about secretly getting an abortion after Hefner got her pregnant.
The pair have now sat down with People Magazine for their first interview in six years to talk about dealing with 'bullying' during their time at the mansion. They also detail how they feared they would end up dead while going through an 'Anna Nicole phase' where they struggled with weight gain, pills and alcohol use.
Karissa and Kristina had been fans of the E! News reality show Girls Next Door before their life as playmates - but Kristina said, 'what they show on TV and on the show was a 100 percent different from what was going on behind the scenes.'
'It was such a culture shock for us,' Karissa jumped in to add. 'We literally...We didn't grow up with a young mother, so we didn't know about hair and makeup.
The pair have now sat down with People Magazine for their first interview in six years to talk about dealing with 'bullying' during their time at the mansion - and how they feared they 'were going through our "Anna Nicole phase"'; seen in 2009 in Monaco
'We didn't know much about fashion or style. And we're a lot younger than Bridget [Marquardt], Kendra [Wilkinson] and Holly [Madison] - we're teenagers.'
Kristina further expressed that there had been tension between the twins as well as the other playmates.
'We got a lot of jealousy from the other Playmates because we were twins,' she stated.
'We were the first twins to each get our own months, which made history. We were the youngest Playmates and the youngest girlfriends.'
Since the twins were still only teenagers at the time of moving into Hefner's mansion, the others were able to go out and party - which they could not do.
Karissa claimed that the jealousy from the others stemmed from Hugh giving them more 'special attention.'
She explained, 'When we're taking pictures, he would want to get in the middle of the twins to take a picture. Or he would be like, "Can you move the twins toward the front of the table? I want to sit next to them." So the girls started getting really jealous.'
Kristina would 'cry' because 'there was so much bullying' - but the twins decided to stay.
She also shared that 'Playboy opened so many doors, but the obligations for the reality show and being girlfriends limited our opportunities.'
Karissa told People, 'We always say Playboy will always be a part of our lives. We were Playboy fans and we still are Playboy fans. Even though it turned out to be very traumatic for us, there were also a lot of high points.'
Once they hit their early 20s, the twins had moved out and Karissa said that they both temporarily embarked on their own individual paths.
However, the pair soon came to terms that Playboy had 'left a huge hole in both of our hearts and our spirits.'
Karissa added, 'It really crumbled who we are, especially when he took our religion away. Our believing in Jesus became a big problem, and losing that was just really big trauma that we dealt with. We had no family that was there to back us up like a lot of the girls.'
After leaving the mansion, the former playmates struggled with substance abuse and in 2014 were notably involved in a car accident which resulted in Kristina being cited for misdemeanor DUI.
Kristina recalled, 'Everyone was saying we were going through our 'Anna Nicole phase'. We gained weight. There was alcohol and pills. We were really unhealthy and lost and, even at points, suicidal. We had no one. It was just us, trying to figure it out after losing ourselves.'
The twins understood they needed a change and moved away from Los Angeles to eventually settle in Michigan.
'I didn't think we would ever come out of it. But Michigan changed us. We love being in Michigan and then going to L.A. or Vegas for work.'
Kristina added that they both have been 'hiding' since the 2022 A&E documentary Secrets Of Playboy released.
In an episode of the docuseries, the twins recalled how they were forced to have a threesome with Hefner on their 19th birthday.
'We had never done a threesome together before, we would never want to,' Kristina expressed, and her twin sister added, 'And that was our 19th birthday. You're never gonna forget that.'
Karissa said at the time, 'Every time I've done it with him, it's assault. For me, it's like rape. He used control mechanisms completely through everything, so I'm happy that I had the abortion.'
Elsewhere in the episode, Karissa expressed that Hefner 'has so much power. It's like a cult. The isolation that I had from the outside world.'
Kristina added that, 'You lose yourself being there' and compared life at the mansion to 'being in prison and have someone breaking you.'
After leaving, the Shannon twins were later diagnosed with PTSD and went to therapy.
Karissa said, 'I don't think that that part is ever gonna go away, that part of us that was taken,' while her twin also shared they have had difficulties dating since. 'We can't emotionally connect like that.'
But three years later, she told People during their latest interview: 'We're healing and listening to our inner selves and keeping God first.
'We transformed our mental and now you can physically see how much better we are. It starts from within and it's all really connected. We're excited to work hard, have fun and continue protecting our peace.'

Katy Perry defiantly claps back at haters amid music career scrutiny and Orlando Bloom split
Katy Perry has defiantly clapped back at haters as she performed for a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden in NYC on Monday amid her Lifetimes Tour. The 40-year-old Firework singer - whose split from Orlando Bloom was confirmed in June after nine years together - addressed the audience inside the massive stadium over speculation that she couldn't sell out the 19,500 seat venue. 'They said, "No way! MSG, it couldn't be done." And I was scared, too,' the star expressed, per People. Perry then jokingly added that she had been worried she would be eating a 'hot dog from the corner' instead of taking to the stage inside the sold-out stadium. The mom-of-one then called New York 'special' as well as a 'beautiful hot mess.' She recalled recently arriving to the Big Apple and said 'it smelled like New York City. And you know what I'm talking about.' Perry continued, 'It was late at night. We got in from Philly, and there were drunk people vomiting on the same corner as people making out. That was New York City! And I loved it.' The singer further expressed that NYC 'represents life,' including 'the highs, the lows, the in-betweens, everything that is messy, everything that is beautiful. 'And it sure as hell is not perfect 'cause perfection is an illusion. I understood it because I resonate with it so much, because one of my favorite words is authenticity, and you know what New York is? Authentic.' Perry's response to haters this week comes amid her music career scrutiny and recent breakup from Bloom. The star dropped her seventh studio album 143 in September 2024 - but was panned by critics upon its release. She also garnered backlash due to her collaboration with Dr. Luke on the LP, who was involved in a years-long legal battle with fellow singer Kesha after she sued him in 2014 of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse - which he denied. Earlier this year in April, Perry was one of the celebrities who took part in an 11-minute space mission on Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin rocket. The Dark Horse songstress was brutally mocked after she promoted her tour dates while in space and for later kissing the ground as she landed safely back to Earth. The Dark Horse songstress was brutally mocked after she promoted her tour dates while in space and for later kissing the ground as she landed safely back to Earth The all-female space mission notably garnered negative reaction from both fans as well as other celebrities, including Olivia Munn and Emily Ratajkowski. A source previously told Daily Mail, 'Katy doesn't regret going to space. It was life changing. What she does regret is making a public spectacle out of it.' However, she did regret 'kissing the ground' as well as the 'close-up camera moments' while inside the capsule. In May, it was revealed that Perry was not invited back for another Las Vegas residency. 'The residency was a disaster for Resorts World, a complete failure,' a separate source told NewsNation at the time. Resorts World Las Vegas - where the singer held her PLAY residency - allegedly lost money to keep her show on from 2021 through 2023. Perry's Lifetimes Tour kicked off in April, not long after her Blue Origin mission. But the concerts have experienced ups and downs thus far, from canceled dates to low ticket sales. The singer's choreography has also been mocked on social media, with some comparing her dancing to 'mom moves.' However, Perry has brushed aside the criticism and backlash as she continues to embark on her tour dates. Later this week, she will make a stop in Newark as well as Baltimore and Raleigh before later kicking off an international trek in September. The Lifetimes Tour will come to an end later this year on December 7 with a performance in Abu Dhabi. This month, Perry sustained injuries after dropping to her knees when a fan collapsed on stage during her concert. She later took to Instagram to reveal her bloody right knee as well as bruises. Perry's split from ex-fiance Bloom came to light in June following their engagement in 2019 and the birth of their daughter Daisy the following year. At the time, a source told Us Weekly: 'Katy and Orlando have split but are amicable,' while also adding that the separation has been 'not contentious' thus far. 'Katy is of course upset but is relieved to not have to go through another divorce, as that was the worst time in her life.' The Teenage Dream hitmaker was previously married to Russell Brand from 2010 until their divorce in 2012. And representatives for the two stars also confirmed to Daily Mail: 'Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting. 'They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is - and always will be - raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.' Late last month in July, Perry was seen enjoying a dinner date with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Montreal amid her Lifetimes Tour stop in Canada. And sources have since stated that the pair had an 'instant connection' and are 'interested in each other.' In video obtained by Daily Mail, the pair took part in a lighthearted conversation as they sat across from each other as they dined at the eatery. At one point, the mom-of-one held a small smile on her face as she listened to what Trudeau was saying. Two days later, the former Canadian Prime Minister - who announced his resignation earlier this year in January - was also spotted at her Montreal concert on Wednesday at the Bell Centre. It also came two years after his split from ex-wife Sophie Gregoire in August 2023. The former couple are also parents to three children. A source told People that the pair 'are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes.' And another insider recently told Daily Mail that the pair's dinner outing was simply 'a get together.' 'She hasn't told anyone it was anything more, and she usually wears her heart on her sleeve, so if something were happening, she'd let her close friends know. But right now it is nothing more than friendship.' Following her split from Bloom, the singer 'isn't ready to start dating anyone right now' and is instead focusing on 'healing' from the separation. 'Could that change? Obviously, but the ball is in Katy's court right now. No relationship so far.' Another insider stated that Perry and Trudeau first met at an event and that their dinner date this week was only 'a hangout.' They later added, 'It could develop, of course, but it's not anything more than two single people who had dinner together and like to talk.' The source further explained that Perry 'literally just became single five minutes ago and they haven't even separated all of their stuff yet. She's not going to fall in love with someone new so quickly.' On Tuesday, Perry glammed up in a figure-hugging, navy dress with a white trim on the neckline for a night out in NYC She slipped into a pair of open-toed, nude heels and styled her dark locks into a chic up do as she grabbed dinner at The Pool in the Big Apple On Tuesday, Perry glammed up in a figure-hugging, navy dress with a white trim on the neckline for a night out in NYC. She slipped into a pair of open-toed, nude heels and styled her dark locks into a chic up do as she grabbed dinner at The Pool in the Big Apple. The songstress opted for minimal accessories to allow her outfit to be the main focal point, and added a pair of small earrings. Perry easily carried a mini yellow purse in her hand to hold a few items she needed for the nighttime excursion.

Rapper makes truly bizarre claim about believing he could be part alien
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Rapper Machine Gun Kelly has claimed that he thinks he might be part alien in a bonkers admission during a chat show. The 35-year-old rapper, real name Colson Baker, isn't afraid of a quirky confession or two, recently admitting that he doesn't really eat and just drinks lots of water, bone broth, and a little kimchi. The Bad Things rapper – who welcomed a little girl with ex-partner Megan Fox just a few months ago– has now made another outlandish claim as he discussed his age and parentage. During a Sunday night appearance on Andy Cohen's Bravo talk show Watch What Happens Live, he was speaking about his 16-year-old daughter. Seemingly surprised that he has a daughter who was a teenager, Andy asked how old MGK is. 'It's a weird thing, dude, I don't know if my age… I don't know if it exists,' he said, only further confusing the host. Andy asked: 'You have a Mariah Carey connection to your age? It's very fluid?' making a reference to Mariah's admitted refusal to acknowledge the passing of time. 'I don't know many facts about my life, so I don't know,' MGK said. 'I'm starting to be like, if my skin rips open, it heals really quick. I'm starting to be like, 'Who's my dad?'' Andy asked: 'Do you think you could be otherworldly?' 'I asked my mom, 'Is there any period of time you went missing? A tall, slender creature?'' Kelly replied. 'She told me she felt like she got abducted at one point.' 'So there may be something to this?' asked Andy. 'No, there really is!' he said. 'I'm bad at talking, I shouldn't have come on a talk show.' Kelly's parents were both Christian missionaries when he was a child, leading him to move around a lot. His mother left home when he was nine years old, and he and his father moved to Denver soon after. He experienced poverty growing up with his father facing depression and unemployment. MGK shares a 16-year-old daughter named Casie with his ex Emma Cannon. The pair got together as teenagers, with Casie being born when Kelly was just 19. For any fans confused about his age, the rapper was born in 1990, and has a large tattoo that reads 'Est 1990' emblazoned on his chest in case he ever forgets. Kelly has two children, another daughter named Saga Blade Fox-Baker with Megan Fox. The couple announced their engagement last January, but then called things off by December, just weeks after announcing they were expecting a child together. More Trending An insider previously told People Magazine that they are focused on co-parenting their little girl together. 'Whatever issues they have, Megan and MGK both are on the same page when it comes to co-parenting,' the source said. 'Right now they're amicable.' 'No one would be surprised if they gave their relationship another try down the line,' they added. View More » 'But right now they're focused on what's best for their daughter.' Got a story? Channel Seven star blasts the cream of Australian television talent for being unbelievably arrogant and incredibly egotistical after partying with them for one night
star Brian Taylor has raised eyebrows after blasting the 'arrogance' of Aussie TV stars who attended the Logies recently in Sydney. Speaking on his Life of Brian podcast, the footy commentator didn't name any entertainment identities as he 'didn't want to embarrass anyone' - but Taylor is unlikely to be invited to the red carpet event in 2026 and beyond following his vicious rant. A polarising character himself, Taylor felt some A-listers were 'caught up in the moment' before labelling some aspects of the gala evening a 'zoo.' 'I wouldn't say the Logies is everyone's choice of event — I think a lot of people try and avoid events like this,' Taylor said. 'I go, not because we (Channel Seven) are going to win anything because we never win anything and we probably should. 'I go to observe people and see how they are acting. It's fascinating to see it up close. Speaking on his Life of Brian podcast, the footy commentator didn't mince his words, also stating he couldn't believe how much some stars relished the red carpet 'The actors, they are so caught up in the moment. Arrogance is easy to find. It is (just) unbelievable. 'I'm not going to give any examples because I don't want to embarrass anyone. (But) the way they walk around and strut around. 'I thought we as sports people (were egotistical), but not in comparison to these guys. '(On the red carpet) it is a zoo... the women just love it, they can't get enough of it. You've got to see it to believe it.' Taylor, who attended the ritzy event at The Star with colleagues Kane Cornes and Abbey Holmes, was impressed by host Sam Pang. He gave Pang '10 out of 10' when it came to MC duties. Cornes labelled the Logies - where he presented an award on stage with Channel 10's Tara Rushton - a 'different experience.' 'I felt under-dressed compared to everyone else and have never been more out of my comfort zone,' he said on SEN. 'I wanted a selfie with Alf (Ray Meagher from Home and Away) but I wasn't brave enough in the end. 'It was a good night, we had a great table.'
