‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' Will Hit Theaters Next June
The DC Universe's own Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl, is returning as Superman's cousin in her first film since 1984. The 2021 comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is being adapted for the big screen.
DC Studios' co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran confirmed the film in January 2023. Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) will direct, and the script will be penned by Ana Nogueira in her feature film screenwriting debut.
'A hearty public welcome to Ana Nogueira to the DC Studios family,' Gunn posted to his Instagram. 'Ana is an amazing writer whose screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. We're excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale.'
While we still won't see Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hit our theaters until next year, ahead is everything we know so far.
On Jan. 29, 2024, Deadline revealed that House of the Dragon actress Milly Alcock will be playing the role of Kara Zor-El.
'So excited to be a part of the DC fam,' Alcock wrote in a post announcing her role, along with a picture of Supergirl from the comic. 'Thank you so much to @jamesgunn for trusting me with Kara / Supergirl 💙🥹💙.'
Gunn expressed his excitement for Alcock to be playing Supergirl on his Instagram, too. He posted a screenshot of Deadline's article, saying, 'This is accurate. Milly is a fantastic young actor, and I'm incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU.'
'Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon, but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl,' he continued. 'She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis, and Ana Nogueira.'
Previously, Melissa Benoist held the title of DC's Supergirl, playing her in the CBS/CW series Supergirl from 2015 to 2021. Sasha Calle also played her in the 2023 film The Flash. Meg Donnelly voiced the character in the animated movies Legion of Superheroes (2023) and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One (2024). Donnelly was close to playing her in the upcoming solo film, but the part ultimately went to Alcock.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming Supergirl movie is set to be released on June 26, 2026.
Jason Momoa (Aquaman) will play the alien Lobo. Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard) will play the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) will play the alien Ruthye Marye Knoll. Per Variety, David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) and Emily Beecham (Cruella) will also star as Supergirl's parents.
On July 16, Gunn posted the official Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow poster featuring Alcock.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on the 2022 comic book series by Tom King. Although we don't know how closely the movie will follow, the comic tells a story of a hopeless Kara Zor-El who meets Ruthye, a young alien girl on a quest for revenge. She is on a hunt for the bad guys who destroyed her world, and Kara decides to help her.
'In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She's much more hardcore, she's not exactly the Supergirl we're used to seeing,' Gunn revealed to Deadline.
According to Collider, 'The film will be a part of the new DC Universe, taking place in Chapter 1, titled 'Gods and Monsters.' Led by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Peter Safran (Aquaman), DC Studios will be resetting their franchises in a new direction that is heavily based on the comics that made the brand a household name in the first.'
Superman, which was released in July, is the first film in this new universe.

Winona Ryder confesses to keeping rotisserie chicken wishbone from Christopher Walken for years
Winona Ryder is happily settled now with boyfriend Scott Mackinlay Hahn, but the actress had a couple of movie star crushes while making her way in the industry. She told Elle U.K. in an interview published Wednesday that Christopher Walken once gave her a store-bought rotisserie chicken, and because she was so enthralled by him at the time, she kept the carcass longer than normal. "I still have the wishbone and am trying to make it into a necklace," she confided. The pair worked together on the 2014 political thriller "Turks & Caicos." While she didn't clarify if her fascination with the "Pulp Fiction" actor was romantic or platonic, she vividly described her former yearning for Al Pacino when she was in her early 20s. "I was absolutely in love with Al Pacino when I was working with him," she said. "We were doing that workshop for 'Richard III,' which I didn't know was gonna be a movie. I was actively in love with him." The "Beetlejuice" actress said the "Scarface" actor loved coffee and would take her around New York City to try different brews. "I'm 22, or whatever," she continued. "Finally, he's dropping me off wherever I'm staying, and I'm like, 'I love you, you know. I really am completely in love with you.'' And he was like: 'Aw, honey, noooo.'" The pair still made "Looking for Richard" about the British monarch in 1996. She laughed that 10 years later she met Pacino's girlfriend "who's younger than me." Pacino, 85, is more than 30 years older than Ryder, 53. "'Dude, I'm f------ throwing myself at you,'" she said. "I still play poker with him sometimes. It's the best." San Diego Comic-Con's ‘Aztec Batman' Trailer Explores Mythos, Culture, and Justice In a New Light
During San Diego Comic-Con, HBO Max finally showcased its upcoming DC Studios animated Batman movie, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires. The film, also known as Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios, offers a new take on the Caped Crusader's storied mythos. According to HBO Max Latin America's press release, its story will center on 'a young Aztec boy named Yohualli Coatl, whose father, village leader Toltecatzin, is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Coatl flees to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of looming danger. Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma's temple, and avenge his father's death.' Aztec Batman was first announced in 2022 in celebration of the DC hero's 83rd anniversary. The animated series is being created in collaboration with Warner Bros. Animation, Particular Crowd, Mexico's Anima, and Book of Life producer Chatrone. While the animated project has a lot of hands involved, it's being helmed by a familiar hand in Juan Meza-León, storyboard artist of the Harley Quinn Animated Series fame. While Batman Ninja and its 2025 sequel, Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, set the Caped Crusader in a modern-day setting, isekai adventures notwithstanding, Aztec Batman presents its version of the DC hero steeped in the period piece, where colonialism is intertwined with his vigilanteism while maintaining Batman's essence. In an interview with Anime News Network, Meza-León elaborated on how their version of Batman, despite coming from a wealthy family, will face challenges from the class system that would have influenced a young boy in Aztec culture. 'He goes through tragedy at the hands of the conquistadors. So that's where you get the loss of the parents and also the loss of his village. That motivates him and pushes him into a journey that, unbeknownst to him, is being led by the deities that guide him into becoming the bat warrior,' Meza-León told Anime News Network. 'We try to be as faithful as we can to the essence of the characters, whether it's Batman, Joker, or Two-Face. They're completely new characters with different origins, but you can still see the spirit of their comic counterparts.' Aside from the obvious cultural and historical influences, Aztec Batman producer García de Letona told Anime News Network that the movie was inspired by Batman: The Animated Series, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and a bunch of comic books.
