Allow us to retain PG medical seats for in-service doctors: Tamil Nadu to Centre
CHENNAI: Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Wednesday wrote a letter to his union counterpart J P Nadda requesting his personal intervention to ensure all the 50% superspeciality seats earmarked for in-service candidates under the state quota are retained and made available in round 2 of state-level NEET-SS counselling. The letter follows reports that 145 of the 215 seats reserved for in-service candidates, who had qualified for the quota by serving in government-run hospitals for a specific number of years, that were not taken in round 1 counselling have been surrendered to the All India Quota (AIQ) since the Union government did not give approval or schedule for the state to conduct its second round of counselling. However, Subramanian said it has come to the notice of the government that 'the process of surrendering the unfilled in-service seats to the All-India quota is being considered, without conducting the mandatory second round of counselling at the state level'. He said such a move would effectively deprive in-service candidates in Tamil Nadu of their rightful opportunity to upgrade or participate in the subsequent round of counselling. He said this would be contrary to the spirit and intent of the order of the Supreme Court, based on which the 50% reservation has been implemented in the state.

Supriya raises concerns over NEET after Pune aspirant alleges OMR sheet tampering
1 2 Pune: Baramati MP Supriya Sule on Wednesday questioned NEET's credibility after a Pimpri Chinchwad aspirant alleged OMR sheet tampering and discrepancies in her details. Sule, via a social media post, also demanded a thorough probe and strict action against those responsible in the case. NEET aspirant from Ravet Muskan Shaikh filed a non-cognisable offence with the Ravet police June 8 after two masked men on a scooter allegedly threatened her against raising the issue. Taking to social media platform X, Sule posted: "Such incidents raise grave concerns about the transparency and integrity of an examination as important as NEET. If students' answer sheets are manipulated in this manner, it puts their future at stake and casts a shadow on the credibility of the entire examination process. " Muskan's uncle, Salim, told TOI that they emailed the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding the issue on June 3 and submitted a formal complaint to its New Delhi office on June 10. Muskan's father, Vasim, alleged in the complaint that the OMR sheet released by NTA didn't match the original one filled during the exam. He requested corrections be allowed before the final results. HC to hear afresh pleas against Maratha quota law from July 18
Mumbai: A special three-judge bench of Bombay high court will begin hearing afresh the challenges to state's latest iteration of the Maratha reservations on July 18. After the Supreme Court directive, HC, in May, constituted a new three-judge bench to hear the petitions, including those filed as public interest litigations, challenging the constitutional validity of the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act, 2024, which provides 10% reservation for the Maratha community in govt jobs and admissions to educational institutions. The state opposed the request for consideration of any interim relief. The new full bench of Justices Ravindra V Ghuge, N J Jamadar, and Sandeep Marne on Wednesday recorded submissions of advocate general Birendra Saraf. There were detailed arguments heard in 2024 on interim relief, after which there was an interim arrangement that all further admissions to educational institutions and employment would be subject to court orders. Saraf submitted that this has operated for over a year and that the request for fresh consideration of interim relief was unwarranted. Pradeep Sancheti, senior counsel for a petitioner, sought an earlier date. Other lawyers also argued, saying students who took admission last year were also affected and hence, were seeking interim orders. In May, Supreme Court asked HC to expeditiously hear the pleas, including applications by students appearing for the undergraduate and postgraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test of 2025. The students filed pleas seeking interim relief, claiming that a delay in the disposal of pleas was impacting their right to equal consideration in the admission process. The petitions were not fully heard when the then HC Chief Justice was transferred in Jan as Delhi high court Chief Justice. Supreme Court said if Bombay HC cannot hear the matter for final disposal then it may consider interim relief. HC has now fixed a schedule to hear the matter at length on the main challenge. Last July, HC had observed that the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission, headed by former HC judge Justice S B Shukre, was a necessary party to be heard in one of the PILs filed before it.
