Bookings now open for AirAsia's new routes to Pontianak from Kuching, KL
PONTIANAK (July 26): AirAsia's new flight routes between Kuching and Pontianak, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Pontianak, are now open for bookings from today until August 3, 2025, for travel between September 12, 2025 and March 28, 2026.
Flights from Kuching to Pontianak are available from as low as RM149 one-way, while flights from Pontianak to Kuching start from IDR467,371.
Meanwhile, flights from Kuala Lumpur to Pontianak start at RM159 one-way, with return flights from Pontianak priced from IDR499,000.
According to West Kalimantan Governor Drs H Ria Norsan, these new routes serve the interests of all three cities as they not only facilitate easier access for travellers, but also boost trade, investment and tourism flows.
'West Kalimantan stands ready to welcome more Malaysian visitors, while providing convenient access for Indonesians seeking business opportunities, leisure travel and medical services in Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur,' he said when launching the AirAsia flight routes in conjunction with the Sarawak Travel Fair by Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) at Ayani Megamall here today.
He added that the route is especially important as many Indonesians, particularly from Pontianak, seek medical treatment in Kuching, as well as in Penang and Kuala Lumpur.
This expansion follows AirAsia's rapid growth in Indonesia, including the recent launch of the Kuala Lumpur–Palembang route in July and the upcoming Kuala Lumpur–Semarang route in September.
With the addition of Pontianak, AirAsia Malaysia will serve a total of 17 destinations in Indonesia, operating 223 weekly flights between Malaysia and Indonesia, solidifying its position as the airline with the widest network serving the archipelago.
The launch of these routes also enhances regional connectivity and supports both governments' tourism targets, Malaysia's goal of attracting 4.3 million Indonesian visitors in 2025, and Sarawak's target of five million visitor arrivals by year-end.
It also contributes to Indonesia's national goal of recording 16 million international tourist arrivals, with Malaysia remaining one of its top source markets.
In March 2020, the flights between Kuching and Pontianak, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Pontianak, were fully suspended, following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, compounded by the temporary reclassification of Supadio Airport to domestic status.
This year, the route has resumed following the reinstatement of Supadio Airport in Pontianak as an international airport, as stated by Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin in a recent statement.
Previously, former Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, Raden Sigit Witjaksono, had commented that direct flights between Kuching and Pontianak would greatly benefit both regions—particularly in view of Indonesia's capital relocation from Jakarta to Nusantara in East Kalimantan.
Lee also acknowledged Raden's vital role, noting that his support and coordination were instrumental in the route's reinstatement.

RM5k aid for Tambunan small traders

The initiative is part of the 'Bantuan Untukmu' program aimed at easing the operational costs of traders, improving their business infrastructure, and boosting grassroots entrepreneurship. In his speech, Dr Jeffrey expressed pride in the achievements of the Tambunan community, noting that the district has nearly eradicated hardcore poverty. However, he acknowledged that there remain segments of the population living in poverty who require targeted strategic support tailored to current needs. He stressed the importance of continued support and new initiatives to ensure no citizen is left behind in the development process. Dr Jeffrey also reminded the people of Tambunan to stay alert to the various forms of assistance available, not only from the State Government but also from the Federal Government. The federal government, through the Sabah Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Industries (Maffi), has also intensified efforts in rural development with allocations exceeding RM33.59 million for agri-food projects across Sabah. These projects include the rehabilitation of 534.55 hectares of abandoned paddy fields, the construction of 23 agricultural produce collection centres, and the implementation of integrated cash crop and livestock initiatives. These efforts not only generate economic output but also empower the local agricultural sector. He also highlighted the Agropreneur Muda program, which offers opportunities for youth aged 18 to 45 to become agricultural entrepreneurs. The program provides grants, fertilizer assistance, access to productive land, and technical training. He noted that the initiative is particularly relevant for young people in Tambunan who possess idle land with development potential. He advised the RM5,000 aid recipients to use the funds wisely, whether to improve their stall structures, upgrade business equipment, or increase inventory. The assistance is expected to boost their daily income and stimulate the local economy through higher-quality services and products. Furthermore, he encouraged traders to view the aid as a catalyst toward achieving more stable and sustainable income streams. Renewed Pontianak-Kuching flights spark hopes for improved travels
Eko Dony Prayudi PONTIANAK (July 28): With the recent announcement of direct AirAsia flights between Pontianak and Kuching, residents of the West Kalimantan capital are calling for improved services and infrastructure on the Sarawak side. In welcoming the renewed connectivity, some Indonesians see it as an opportunity to rethink how Kuching would accommodate its regional neighbours – not just in transport, but also in areas of tourism, healthcare and other basic services. Travel writer Eko Dony Prayudi, 42, visits Kuching at least twice a year for holidays, shopping, and also meeting friends. 'Kuching could improve its tourism infrastructures, particularly in places like Bako National Park and the Fairy Caves in Bau. 'Promoting more cultural exchange programmes would also make the city even more appealing to Indonesian visitors,' he tells The Borneo Post. Melisa Putri For Melisa Putri, affordability and increased travel frequency are key to strengthening tourism. A content writer for a technology agency in Pontianak, she frequently visits Kuching for family holidays – seeing her relatives living there. 'In my view, it's important to improve transport accessibility, such as by opening more direct flights connecting Pontianak and Kuching,' says the 26-year-old Indonesian, while expressing her wish for better air connectivity. In this respect, she also calls for more budget-friendly airfare rates, suggesting that pricing should take into account the income levels in different regions. According to Melisa, many Pontianak residents, including herself, visit Kuching for medical reasons, and in this regard, she suggests that hospitals may consider offering discounted rates and check-up promotions. His youngest son Razqa Alfarizqe, 12, suffers from seizures. 'I choose Kuching for treatment because it suits my son's needs very well. 'He has a follow-up this coming September,' says Idham, who travels with his wife and eldest son on each visit. However, the medical bill for each trip – totalling 8,000,000 Indonesian rupiah (over RM2,000) – is a heavy burden for him. Idham hopes that hospitals could consider lowering the treatment package rates, and also for the accommodation in Kuching to be made more affordable, so as to ease the financial pressure off medical travellers. Nonetheless, all three Indonesians speak fondly of Kuching, citing its cleanliness, food, culture, and distinctive architecture as the highlights – with one notable example being the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex. They recall how difficult travel became after direct flights were suspended in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Without air travel, they had to endure gruelling land journeys, lasting for seven to eight hours and navigating the narrow roads stretching from Pontianak to the border crossings either in Tebedu and Biawak on the Sarawak side. The route via Entikong towards the Tebedu-Entikong border – a single-lane road in each direction – has been described as 'particularly exhausting', with frequent potholes causing a bumpy ride despite sections of the road having been paved. Now, with the direct flights back in operation, many believe that the route will once again become a vital artery that supports economic, tourism and healthcare ties between the two cities. More R&D to produce local fruits year-round
KLANG: Thailand and Japan have been used as reference points in research and development (R&D) for seasonal fruits to achieve year-round production. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu ( pic ) said the effort, undertaken by the Agriculture Department and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), is in line with the campaign to promote local fruits and vegetables. 'We are carrying out R&D to produce new seeds and so on. 'The Mardi durian, for example, was produced recently in Kuala Kangsar. 'Delicious (and) high quality,' he said when launching the National Campaign to Eat More Local Fruits and Vegetables at the four-day Fama Fest 2025@ Selangor here yesterday. Mohamad said the ministry is very serious about boosting the popularity of local fruits among Malaysians. As part of the effort, he said the government decided that local fruits must be served at official functions as a show of support for local farmers. 'During my visit to Thailand as Defence Minister (May 2018 to February 2020), I was served cuisine made with local fruits and vegetables throughout my time there. 'The same goes for Japan – almost 100% local,' he said, Bernama reported. Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli said the fest, which featured 50 local entrepreneurs and drew more than 40,000 visitors, recorded a sales value of over RM800,000. Since its launch in 2017, the Fama Fest has been a catalyst for the economic growth of agri-entrepreneurs, he said. Last year's event saw the participation of 949 entrepreneurs and attracted more than 492,000 visitors nationwide, generating RM8.8mil in sales. This year, the target is RM5.3mil in sales with 265,000 visitors and the involvement of 383 entrepreneurs across six locations.
