Extreme siren alerts still ringing in ears: Bengal student recounts horror
1 2 3 4 Kolkata: Amid chaos and missile attacks by Iran on the US airbase in Doha on Monday, the Indian govt managed to evacuate Indian students, including at least five from Bengal, via Jordan. While India was initially using flights of Jazeera Airways to evacuate those stuck in Israel, Indian Air Force aircraft were pressed into service to evacuate students faster. On Monday afternoon, the buses carrying Indian students from a number of cities in Israel got stranded near the Jordanian border after an "extreme alert" siren went off following Iran's missile strikes in central Israel. The bus reached the border a bit late. Although the visa process at the border was complete by the afternoon, the evacuees were not given any flight details till late evening. "The first flight carrying Indian students left Amman around 2 pm local time. We heard that another batch of Indian students was being flown via Egypt. Meanwhile, television screens flashed the news of Iran's attack on the airbase at Doha. Everything started changing after that," recounted Amaresh Das, a resident of East Midnapore and a post-doctoral research scholar with the Technion Israel Institute of Technology. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unglaublich: Der Rechner zeigt sofort den Wert Ihres Hauses an Hauswert Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Meanwhile, Qatar temporarily closed the airspace, and planes were diverted from Doha. Both Bahrain and Kuwait closed their airspaces as well, leading to confusion and uncertainty. The first flight, which left in the afternoon, had to return to Kuwait after the escalation. "We could realise that our journey back home was getting shrouded in uncertainty. But we received a message around 8.30 pm local time, and it said that we would be arriving at the Ghaziabad base of the Indian Air Force instead of the Indira Gandhi International Airport," he recounted. While the IAF planes were landing in Jordan, Iran was continuing with its offensive, making it difficult for the plane to land. The plane finally took off from Amman after midnight and reached New Delhi at 9 am. Aniruddha Bera, a resident of Salboni and a research fellow at Tel Aviv University, Israel, returned home on Tuesday. "I received a call from my son this morning, and we are relieved now," his father, Asim Bera, said. Abir Mukhopadhyay, a research scholar at a university in Israel and a resident of Asansol, also returned home. Twenty tourists from Deganga, stranded in Iran, landed in New Delhi on Tuesday afternoon. Of them, a group of 11 pilgrims from three families in Dhalipara under Chaurashi Gram Panchayat in Deganga went to Iraq and then to Iran to visit prominent religious sites there. "My parents reached New Delhi this afternoon. They are likely to catch a flight to Kolkata on Wednesday," said Hossain Mehedi, son of Md Akram Hossain, a member of the 11 pilgrims' group.

Judge strikes out Sikhs for Justice UK's libel claim against Tory peer Rami Ranger
LONDON: A high court judge here has struck out a libel claim brought by the UK branch of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) against multimillionaire Tory peer Rami Ranger but allowed the claim against him brought by the US SFJ's general counsel, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, to continue. The£500,000 (Rs 5.8 crore) libel claimcentres on an interview Ranger, chairman of the British Sikh Association, gave 'Pakistan Daily' in 2021 and a tweet in which he alleged SFJ and Pannun were funded by 'the enemies of India'. Ranger is quoted in the article as saying: 'They are misleading the public that there are atrocities in Punjab and Sikhs are being badly treated, and all that nonsense, in order to capture the money which is coming to gurdwaras. ' The article was published on Nov 30, 2021 with the headline 'Lord Ranger questions faith, funding of Sikh separatist leader'. Both SFJ UK and Pannun, a New-York based attorney, who India has designated as terrorist, claimed the article damaged their reputations and sought damages and an injunction. They pleaded that the meaning of the article was that they 'are agents of and are funded by Pakistan and ISI and are therefore dishonest about the source of their funding', and that Pannun 'is deliberately misleading the public about the atrocities and ill-treatment suffered by Sikhs in the Punjab in order to illegitimately take money from the gurdwaras'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brass Krishna Idols For Prosperity & Protection In Life Luxeartisanship Shop Now Undo Justice Jay described the case as a 'storm in a teacup'. He struck out the claim by SFJ UK in its entirety, saying that the entire article was about the US-based SFJ and SFJ UK was not mentioned, even though David Lemer, representing the claimants, had sought to argue the context inferred SFJ UK. With reference to the 'enemies of India', he said it is 'well known Pakistan is the main enemy of India and vice versa' but added that 'there is nothing in the article to suggest Pakistani ISI is somehow involved… or that these claimants are agents of Pakistan. To be funded by Pakistan is not defamatory.' He refused Lemer permission to appeal and SFJ UK was ordered to pay Ranger's legal costs/ Nayaz Qazi, who works for Ranger, told TOI outside court: 'It is shocking that these frivolous allegations brought by SFJ and Pannun were used against Rami Ranger in deciding the revocation of his CBE.'

Uttar Pradesh BJP faces heat over allegation that ‘MLA struck official'
Allegations on social media about Banda MLA Prakash Dwivedi slapping a Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) for not releasing seized trucks created an uproar on Tuesday (June 25, 2025). The Opposition called the situation in Uttar Pradesh 'harmful' and 'dangerous' owing to the behaviour of ruling party legislators and sought the strictest action. The MLA admitted scolding the officer for alleged misconduct. This is the second incident in less than a week in which a BJP MLA has been accused of misconduct in U.P. 'What is happening in UP under BJP rule? The BJP leader versus officer is happening; these situations are harmful and dangerous for the state. From Saharanpur to Sonbhadra-Mirzapur, illegal mining is underway in the entire state,' said Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on X, tagging a video link in which a claim was made about the MLA beating the SDM. A mob allegedly attacked SDM Amit Shukla in Banda district on the night of June 22, after the official seized two sand-laden trucks over suspicions they were being used in illegal mining. In the FIR filed by the SDM's official driver, Kamta Prasad Mishra, after two overloaded trucks were impounded, the SDM's vehicle was intercepted and the official abused by 25-30 miscreants. MLA denies assault The police lodged an FIR under Sections 121 (1) (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty), 351 (3) (criminal intimidation), and 109 (attempt to murder) of the BNS. The MLA was not named in the FIR. The issue led to an uproar, with the word spreading that Banda Sadar BJP MLA Prakash Dwivedi had slapped the SDM after asking him to release the trucks. The Hindu tried to reach out to the MLA, whose staff said that Mr. Dwivedi was busy, adding all the allegations were incorrect. Speaking to local media, the MLA called the allegation a deliberate attempt to malign his image. 'I did scold the SDM over what I believed were unjustified vehicle seizures, but there was no physical assault.' Earlier on June 19, the BJP MLA from Jhansi's Babina assembly segment, Rajeev Singh Parichha, created a controversy after a passenger on the Vande Bharat Express was allegedly attacked by his associates. The BJP was forced to issue a show-cause notice to the MLA amid the public outcry.
