Temple priest claims trial to charge of sexually abusing teenage boy
The accused, P. Deva, entered the plea before Judge Aiza Khairuddin on Thursday (August 7).
According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly committed oral sex abuse on a 13-year-old boy.
The act was allegedly committed in a bedroom of a house in Taman Melaka Perdana, here, between 3pm and 4pm on July 4.
If convicted, the accused may face up to 20 years' imprisonment and whipping under Section 14(b) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhamad Ali Hussain proposed bail at RM30,000 with additional conditions, that the accused report to the police station monthly, surrender his passport to the court and refrain from contacting any prosecution witnesses until the case is concluded.
The accused's lawyer, Datuk P. Aravindhakshan, appealed for a lower bail amount, stating that the accused comes from a poor family with no fixed income and relies solely on earnings from odd jobs.
The court later set the bail at RM15,000 with the additional conditions requested by the prosecution.
The next mention date is fixed on Sept 8.

2.1 billion scam calls, unsolicited SMS blocked by MCMC since 2022, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: A staggering 2.1 billion suspicious calls and unsolicited SMS messages between 2022 and August 2025 were blocked by the authorities, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister said that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is in collaboration with telecommunications service providers to combat online fraud. He further highlighted that the MCMC, with the aid of social media providers, has taken down 112,734 fraudulent contents and blocked seven deceptive websites. "These actions are in response to complaints received and are aligned with community guidelines and local laws," he said in a written parliamentary reply. He said this in response to Datuk Siti Aminah Aching (BN-Beaufort) who had asked the government to state its efforts in curbing online scams and the total number of websites taken down. As part of efforts to curb misuse of communication channels, prohibitions on certain SMS content, specifically hyperlinks requesting personal information and callback numbers have been enforced since September 2024. "We aim to protect users from exploitation by criminals who impersonate various entities," said Fahmi. On the legislative front, amendments to Section 233(1) of Act 588 now classify the dissemination of false content with fraudulent intent as a punishable offence, with fines of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both. "Our legal framework is designed to deter such offences effectively," he added. To further promote online safety, the MCMC launched the Safe Internet Campaign on Jan 21, 2025. He said this campaign will educate the public on digital security across 10,000 schools and higher education institutions. Fahmi also said that from January 2025, Internet messaging and social media service providers must adhere to licensing requirements under Act 588, ensuring they obtain an Application Service Provider (ASP(C)) Class License. Service providers are also encouraged to adopt the Code of Conduct for Internet Messaging and Social Media Service Providers, released by MCMC in December 2024, to "foster a safer online environment." In a comprehensive government approach, he added that the establishment of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), led by PDRM, serves as a central hub for fraud prevention. "The NSRC is pivotal in our national strategy, not only serving as a one-stop action centre but also in driving public awareness programmes and national campaigns on digital crime," Fahmi added.

Man gets 10 years' jail, cane for raping neighbour's daughter
MUAR: A palm fruit harvester was sentenced to 10 years in prison and two strokes of the cane for raping his neighbour's daughter five years ago. Sessions Court judge Sayani Mohd Nor found Muhajirin Kasim, 41, guilty of the charge under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, ruling that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt. "After reviewing and weighing all the evidence, along with the exhibits presented throughout the trial, the court finds that the prosecution has successfully proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt to convict the accused of the offence of rape," she said. "Therefore, the court sentences the accused to 10 years in prison and two strokes of the cane, from the date of conviction (today)." According to the charge sheet, Muhajirin raped an 11-year-old girl in his room in Segamat around 10.30pm on June 26, 2020. The victim's mother had asked her to deliver kuih to a neighbour, and she encountered the accused on her way home. Muhajirin invited her into his house, where he raped her after showing her pornographic videos on his phone. The victim returned home and told her family about the incident.

2.1 billion scam calls blocked since 2022
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in collaboration with telecommunication providers, blocked a total of 2.1 billion suspicious and scam-related calls between 2022 and Aug 1, 2025. During the same period, the Communications Ministry said 2.1 billion unsolicited SMS messages were also blocked, while services for 184,289 mobile and fixed lines involved in distributing suspicious messages were terminated. The ministry said social media service providers, at the request of MCMC, have removed 112,734 fraudulent content items and blocked seven scam-related websites from Jan 1, 2024 until Aug 1 this year. "These actions were based on complaints received as well as each platform's community guidelines, in accordance with local laws," the ministry said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday. A directive prohibiting illicit content in SMS, including hyperlinks requesting personal information and callback numbers, has been enforced since Sept 1, 2024. The ministry, through MCMC, is also working with the police by providing technical support for online fraud investigations. This includes facilitating the takedown of social media content, blocking scam-related websites, offering user profiling data and conducting digital forensic analysis. "This measure aims to protect users and curb scam-related crimes, where SMS services are often exploited by criminals impersonating public or private entities to deceive the public," the ministry said. Under Section 233(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), it is an offence to disseminate false content with the intent to commit fraud or deceive any person. Offenders can be fined up to RM500,000, jailed for up to two years, or both. They may also face an extra RM5,000 fine for each day the offence continues.
