Homegrown star Kunlavut wins Thai Open men's singles

BANGKOK : Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn stormed to victory over Anders Antonsen in the badminton men's singles final of the Thai Open today to take his third title this year.
The reigning world and Asian champion took an epic 92 minutes to dispatch the Dane 21-16, 17-21, 21-9.
It was only the second time in nine matches Kunlavut beat his formidable opponent, who is third in the World Rankings and 2024 China Masters winner.
In the women's singles, Chen Yu Fei of China saw off Thailand's top seed Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-16, 21-12.
The victory for the 2025 Asian Champion came off the back of a two-game semi-final where she knocked out Japan's Tomoka Miyazaki.
There was another two-game win in the women's doubles as Malaysia's Pearly Tan and M Thinaah beat South Korea's Jeong Na-eun and Lee Yeon-woo 21-16, 21-17.
Malaysia took an additional doubles win in the men's category as second seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik beat William Kryger Boe and Christian Faust Kjaer of Denmark 20-22, 21-17, 21-12 in an hour.
It was the third World Tour title – their first ever Super 500 – for the pair after they won the Denmark Open in 2023 and the Korea Masters last year.
The mixed doubles final was an all-China affair as Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping won two games to beat their compatriots Gao Jia Xuan and Wu Meng Ying 24-22, 21-16.

Despite the loss, Wei Chong-Kai Wun can hold their heads high as this is their fourth semi-final appearance while they have also won two titles this season, the Indonesia Masters and Malaysia Masters. They have so far won five career titles and were runners-up three times, including in the World Tour Super 1000 series Indonesia Open last year. As beaten semi-finalists in the Indonesia Open, the Malaysian duo take home US$20,300 (RM85,898). In tomorrow's final, the Indonesian pair will either face compatriots Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto or Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae from South Korea.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : National women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah stormed into the final of the Indonesia Open in Jakarta this evening after defeating their Chinese opponents, making it their third final appearance this season. The world No 4 pair, who won the Thai Open title last month, had to labour for 63 minutes before beating Li Yi Jing-Luo Xu Min 12-21, 21-17, 21-11 in a match that saw them take an 8-0 lead in the decider before emerging as winners. An epic showdown awaits Pearly-Thinaah in the final as their opponents will either be world No 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning from China or South Korea's world No 3 duo Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee. These pairs have always been difficult opponents for the Malaysians. Today's win marks the third time that Pearly-Thinaah will be playing in a final this season. Their first final appearance was also at the Istora Stadium in Jakarta during the Indonesia Masters in January, where they lost to South Korea's Kim Hye Jeong-Kong Hee-Yong. Last month, they won the Super 500 Thailand Open, and now, they are in the hunt for their first title in the Super 1000 series, which offers a total prize money of US$1.45 million (RM6.13 million). Pearly-Thinaah have won a total of four BWF World Tour titles to date. The winners of the doubles events tomorrow will earn US$107,300 (RM452, 289), and the runners-up US$50,750 (RM214,520).
