The bases were loaded three batters into the game, but Carlos Rodón dug in and went to work from there.
The Twins scored just one run in that first inning on an infield out, and Rodón retired 17 consecutive batters into the sixth to front the Yankees to a 9-1 victory Tuesday night over Minnesota at the Stadium.
The All-Star lefty permitted just one hit — a leadoff single by Austin Martin to start the game — over seven stifling innings to improve to 12-7 in 25 starts this season.
'We were set up for disaster there, but we got through it,' Rodón said after the game. 'We pushed one across [in the bottom half], and it was like a 0-0 game for me and I just wanted to put up a shut down inning [in the second].
'Offensively we were able to swing the bats and put up nine runs, and that made it easier for me to fill up the zone and just attack hitters.'
Aaron Judge, Anthony Volpe and Giancarlo Stanton went deep in support of Rodón, who completed at least six innings for the first time in five outings since July 11, his final start before the All-Star Game.
Rodón needed 31 pitches to navigate the opening frame, but no more than 13 in any inning thereafter.
Carlos Rodón allowed just one run over seven innings in the Yankees' 9-1 blowout win over the Twins on Aug. 12, 2025.

'Not really expecting [to go seven] after 31 pitches in the first, but baseball's a funny game,' Rodón added.
Martin opened the game for the Twins with a single to center, and Rodón proceeded to walk Byron Buxton and to hit Ryan Jeffers with a pitch to load the bases before recording an out.

But the $162 million lefty whiffed Luke Keaschall for the first out and Kody Clemens for the third around a run-scoring infield out by Royce Lewis.
The Yankees quickly recouped that run on Judge's first homer in seven games since returning from the injured list, and they went up 4-1 on Volpe's three-un shot one inning later.
Rodón took it from there, not allowing another base runner until walking Jeffers with two outs in the sixth and no other hits until Tim Hill replaced him with a 7-1 lead to start the eighth.
'It's one of those like, is he gonna get out of the first inning? That's where your mind is for a minute,' Aaron Boone said. 'But he gets the big strikeout and gets the ground ball and it's like, 'Hey, we got a chance to limit damage here.'

'To only give up one, I thought he executed a really good two-strike pitch to Clemens. Then he just settled in and I really thought it looked a lot different, even in the second. Really big effort by him to be able to give us seven innings after a 30-plus pitch first inning, when it's looking like it's going to be rough. It was really big.'

They sure weren't satisfied with the status quo, though, as evidenced by their recent acquisition of DiJonai Carrington. The Most Improved Player award winner and All-Defensive First Team selection in 2024 has bolstered the league leader's depth, injected a dose of two-way energy into an already determined club and made a seamless transition after the midseason switch. 'She's been a great addition,' starting forward Bridget Carleton said. 'Playing against her has always been a challenge. She's just feisty, competitive, always wants to win, plays hard every single possession.' Even with superstar Napheesa Collier sidelined by a sprained right ankle, the Lynx haven't missed a beat. They're in first place by six games at 27-5, surging toward the No. 1 overall seed for the playoffs. 'You just want to feel like you're a better team when she comes back into the team, that you've figured some things out, that people are playing with confidence,' associate head coach Eric Thibault said. 'Our group's attitude is right about it. Nobody feels sorry for ourselves or anything like that. We just go out and battle.' Carrington was acquired from the Dallas Wings on Aug. 3 for backup forward Diamond Miller, injured guard Karlie Samuelson and Minnesota's 2027 second-round draft pick.e Miller was the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, so Carrington came at a price. But president of basketball operations and head coach Cheryl Reeve, who's chasing a fifth title with Minnesota, has this team fully in win-now mode with Collier in her prime and an experienced lineup around her led by five-time All-Star shooting guard Kayla McBride, two-time All-Star point guard Courtney Williams and shot-blocking specialist Alanna Smith patrolling the post. 'I'm a winner, and this is a winning organization,' Carrington said. The 5-foot-11 native of San Diego, who played her first four WNBA seasons with the Connecticut Sun, was dealt to Dallas earlier this year. She averaged a career-best 5.1 rebounds in 20 games with the Wings. In three games since the trade, and coincidentally since Collier was injured, Carrington has 40 points, 12 rebounds and six steals. The Lynx take a five-game winning streak into their game on Saturday against the defending champion New York Liberty, whom they've already beaten twice this month in a measure of revenge for their overtime loss in New York last year in the decisive game of the WNBA Finals. In the previous round, when the Lynx beat the Sun in a five-game series, Reeve became enamored by Carrington, who had 17 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and one block in defeat in the decisive game of those semifinals. The chance this summer to acquire a defensive ace on the perimeter who could alleviate some of the burden on McBride as well as provide more scoring off the bench was one the Lynx couldn't miss. 'We felt like we could use a little bit more help as we made this run,' Reeve said. 'If you stay exactly the same, it's really hard to accomplish and get back and get over the hump, so we wanted to keep the group together — but we also thought we needed a little bit more.' Williams and Natisha Hiedeman played with Carrington with the Sun, so there was pre-existing chemistry. Smith was a teammate of Carrington's at Stanford, as well, so they were already close. 'It was like a friend coming home,' Smith said. 'That's kind of how it felt. I was excited. I think she's a piece that's really good for us and only going to help us get to the point we want to get to, which is a championship.' Kelsey Plum says she was joking about Caitlin Clark's team at All-Star Game

Los Angeles Sparks star Kelsey Plum said she was joking when she took a verbal shot at Caitlin Clark and her team at the All-Star Game last month, comments that drew significant pushback. 'I made a really bad joke,' Plum said on Sue Bird's 'Bird's Eye View' podcast that dropped Friday. Plum said she was trying to have fun with Team Clark at the All-Star Game in Indianapolis on July 19 when she said Clark's side didn't show up for that morning meeting to discuss collective bargaining agreement talks. The union and the WNBA are in the midst of negotiations, and all the players in the All-Star Game wore T-shirts that read, 'Pay Us What You Owe Us,' including Clark. Plum said at the post-game news conference the players decided that morning to wear the shirts, but "zero members of Team Clark were very present for that.' There was especially a big blowback on social media toward Plum, who said her intention was to bring levity to a serious topic but misread the room. 'I was making a joke they were hungover even though our team nickname was 'Hungover,'" Plum said. "I was like, 'At least we made it.' Obviously, we were all on the same page. We all wore the shirts. We're all unified. I think if anything I was more discouraged because I felt like (the comments) took away from the moment of what we were trying to do.'
