Mahagenco to set up 1071MW solar power projects for over 3L farmers in Maharashtra
MUMBAI: In a drive to reduce dependence on conventional energy and provide uninterrupted daytime electricity to farmers for irrigation, Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MAHAGENCO), one of India's largest state-run power producers with an installed capacity of about 13,880 MW, is set to commission solar power projects with a total capacity of 1,071 MW. MAHAGENCO, after the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), is the second-largest state-owned power generation company in the country. The Chief minister's Solar Agriculture Feeder Scheme 2.0 is a flagship initiative of the Maharashtra government aimed at promoting farmers' financial growth through sustainable energy while reducing service costs for agricultural electricity consumers.
As part of Mission 2025, the government aims to solarize about 30% of agricultural feeders by the end of 2025. Solar projects ranging from 0.5 MW to 25 MW will be established within a 5–10 km radius of distribution substations with agricultural loads.
A strategic joint committee will be formed to ensure the timely completion of these solar projects and to provide guidance on the Solar Agriculture Feeder Scheme 2.0. MAHAGENCO and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet will jointly develop a central dashboard to monitor daily progress in land acquisition and project implementation. The committee will include all key stakeholders who will also receive training on how to use the dashboard effectively.

The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday approved the construction of a 105-km express freight corridor connecting the upcoming Vadhavan port in Palghar to the Samruddhi Expressway at Bharvir in Nashik district, which will slash the travel time to just 1.5 hours from the current 5 hours. The high-speed corridor, aimed at facilitating rapid movement of freight from the western coast to the hinterland, will be implemented by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The project is expected to be completed within three years, with a total estimated cost of Rs 2,528.90 crore. Of this, Rs 1,500 crore will be raised through loans from HUDCO. This decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the CMO stated in a release. The proposed direct link between Vadhavan Port and the Mumbai-Nagpur expressway will bypass the detour that vehicles currently take via the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway. Currently, vehicles have to travel nearly 183.48 km, including an unnecessary 82-km stretch. The new corridor will reduce this distance to 104.898 km, saving 78.582 km and cutting travel time from the current 4 to 5 hours to approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. The corridor will pass through Dahanu, Vikramgad, Jawhar, and Mokhada talukas in Palghar district, and Trimbakeshwar and Igatpuri in Nashik district. The connector link is crucial to support the expected increase in cargo traffic from Vadhavan Port, which is part of the Centre's Sagarmala initiative. The port is set to become a major hub for international maritime trade, and efficient hinterland connectivity is key to its success, the CMO said in a statement. It is expected to catalyse growth for small, medium, and large industries, agriculture-related businesses, educational institutions, and IT companies. The decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The project will be executed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), with financial assistance of Rs 1,500 crore from HUDCO. The total estimated cost stands at Rs 2,528.90 crore, and the project is targeted to be completed in the next three years. Vadhavan Port is being developed as a major transshipment hub through Vadhavan Port Project Limited. Once operational, the port is expected to handle large volumes of international cargo. NMC Signs Rs125 Crore MoU with Keltron to Revive Defunct CCTV Network
Nagpur: With over 2,400 of the city's 3,682 CCTV cameras lying defunct, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) signed a Rs125 crore Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Keltron — Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited — to restore and maintain the city's critical surveillance network. The five-year contract, valued at Rs25 crore annually, aims to revive Nagpur's Smart City safety infrastructure, additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant told TOI. "The agreement was signed on Monday between NMC and Keltron — a state-owned electronics enterprise — under the 'Safe and Smart Nagpur' initiative," the additional municipal commissioner said. The CCTV cameras, installed in 2017 by L&T under the Smart City Solutions Project, proved vital for crime monitoring and traffic control. However, after the expiration of L&T's contract on February 2, 2025, and a short goodwill extension until March 19, the system was left to operate in autopilot mode with little oversight. The Rs125 crore contract is being seen as a crucial step toward restoring public confidence in the city's surveillance capabilities. Once restored and fully functional, the CCTV network is expected to significantly bolster law enforcement, improve traffic management, and enhance overall public safety. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, during a review meeting on June 22 in Nagpur, pressed for the immediate reactivation of all non-functional cameras. He also stressed the need for tighter coordination between NMC and the city police under the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), which is also being implemented by Keltron. Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL), the special purpose vehicle of NMC overseeing Smart City projects, struggled to maintain the surveillance system after L&T left. Interim arrangements with third-party vendors and a few retained L&T technicians lacked the technical capacity to keep the system operational. The network's failure was most evident during sensitive events earlier this year. Over 200 cameras were non-functional on key Ram Navami procession routes, raising serious concerns. Similarly, during the communal clashes in Mahal, surveillance feeds were unavailable due to damage from ongoing infrastructure work, forcing the police to rely on temporary solutions. Keltron has already submitted its bank guarantee and completed all necessary legal formalities, said Pant, adding that a formal work order will be issued soon. Guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has also instructed authorities to restore all defunct cameras and expand surveillance across the city without delay. In an earlier meeting, he stressed that public safety remains the govt's top priority and assured that funding constraints would not hinder upgrades or expansion of the network. Sources revealed that the civic body also plans to strengthen the fibre optic cable infrastructure supporting the CCTV network. "Frequent damage from digging and utility works has been a major issue. Strengthening the cables will offer better protection," said an official, adding that NMC has earmarked approximately Rs11 crore for this effort.
