Tens-of-Thousands of runners, celebrities and campaigners cross the London Marathon finish line

ITV News27-04-2025

Tens-of-thousands of people crossed the finish line of the London Marathon on Sunday including celebrities, MPs and campaigners.
More than 56,000 participants were expected on the 26.2-mile course as temperatures in the capital hit 22.2C.
Among them were David Stancombe and Sergio Aguiar, whose daughters Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, were murdered in the Southport mass stabbing last summer.
The pair are raising money for projects in memory of their daughters and Bebe King, six, who was also killed in the July attack.
In a video message posted on X, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer wished the pair 'the very best of luck', adding, 'the entire nation is in awe of your courage and your resilience'.
The Prince and Princess of Wales also sent the family a "special message" and had also donated to Elsie's Story, a charity that supports young people in Southport.
Running alongside them was Junnie Payne the headteacher of Churchtown Primary School where Alice and Bebe attended.
Celebrities
Some familiar faces were also seen crossing the finish line and collecting their medals including radio presenter Adele Roberts who said she hopes her world record-breaking marathon runs show people with cancer they can 'achieve anything'.
Roberts, who was previously treated for bowel cancer, broke the record for the fastest aggregate time to complete all World Marathon Major races with a stoma (female), upon completing the London Marathon.
She added: 'I've been through much, in terms of recovering from cancer, and with every step even though it hurt, I just thought 'you're alive, you're lucky to be experiencing this', so it was lovely.'
Other famous faces included comedian and TV presenter Romesh Ranganathan, McFly drummer Harry Judd, former England footballer John Terry, actor Stephen Mangan, singer Alexandra Burke, TV presenter Helen Skelton, and fitness coach Joe Wicks also finished the race.
The Masked Singer presenter Joel Dommett, who was running to raise money and awareness for Brain Tumour Support, said he fainted before reaching the finish line.
He wrote on Instagram: 'Not the race I expected! I fainted at mile 17 – don't really remember much but I woke up in an ambulance!"
"Proud of myself for finishing."
Emmerdale star Tony Audenshaw, who last ran the London Marathon in 2015, returned to support Pancreatic Cancer UK, the event's charity of the year, after the death of his wife Ruth in April 2017 aged 43.
While fellow soap actor, Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale in EastEnders also finished the race.
16 MPs also took part in the race including shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick and Labour's Josh Fenton-Glyn.
Fancy Dress
If the challenge of running a marathon alone wasn't enough, some runners completed the race wearing fancy dress in the 22 degree heat.
Costumes spotted racing down the Mall included a group dressed as a colourful caterpillar, a pair dressed as shower gel bottles, a t-rex costume and Big Ben.
A man who has run 113 marathons dressed as a rhino said people were a 'little bit shocked' by him in costume on the Tube on the way to the start line.
Chris Green, who is known as Rhino Boy Chris and is an ambassador for charity Save the Rhinos, holds the world record for the most marathons run in the same three-dimensional costume (male).
The costume, a large grey rhino outfit complete with large horn, was adorned on Sunday with a Union flag and hat.
He added: 'You know what the best thing about wearing this costume is it brings out the big kid in everybody – if ever you're feeling cynical about the world, put on a rhino costume and I guarantee you'll see the best in people.'
Also hoping to have achieved a Guinness World Record today is Ali Young, 51, who was attempting to break the world record for the fastest woman to run a marathon dressed as a bird.
The runner, from Amersham in Buckinghamshire, completed the race dressed as a penguin and said the atmosphere at the event was 'absolutely amazing'.
Ms Young is fundraising on behalf of Maggie's Cancer Care in memory of her late father.
The Winners
Setting off before the crowds was the elite runners and wheelchair races.
Ethiopian runner Tigst Assefa won the women's elite race, setting a new women-only world record with a time of two hours, 15 minutes and 50 seconds.
Sebastian Sawe, from Kenya, came first in the men's elite race with a time of two hours, two minutes and 27 seconds.
During the men's elite race, two activists jumped the barrier and threw red paint onto Tower Bridge in protest of the Israel-Gaza war.
Team GB Olympic triathlon-winner, Alex Yee, 27, finished in 14th place in his first attempt at the distance., with a time of two hours, 11 minutes and eight seconds.
Swiss six-time Paralympic champion Catherine Debrunner successfully defended her 2024 title in the elite women's wheelchair race, and her compatriot Marcel Hug did the same in the men's.
Crowds of supports lined the streets of London cheering on the runners and waving to their loved ones.
As runners crossed the finish line along the Mall, emotions ran high with a mixture of jubilance and exhaustion with some becoming emotional and shedding tears as they collected their medals.
London could set a new record for the world's biggest marathon, which is currently held by the TCS New York Marathon in November when there were 55,646 finishers.

Backstage with Shakira as we reveal the truth about her life on the road and she teases massive UK shows

Read on to learn more of the tour A LOVE SHAK Backstage with Shakira as we reveal the truth about her life on the road and she teases massive UK shows Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) 'DON'T you see, baby, this is perfection?' Shakira sings in front of a 65,000-strong crowd at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. As she wiggles her bum and gives the audience a cheeky grin, it is hard to disagree with the Colombian superstar. Outselling Beyonce and Lady Gaga, Shakira has hit a new stride in the five years since she last performed at the Florida venue for her Super Bowl halftime show with Jennifer Lopez, which for many artists is considered the pinnacle of their career. But now she is having the best time on the road with her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour — translated as Women No Longer Cry — which is why she invited me, Bizarre's Howell, out to Miami where she lives with her two sons. Shakira took me backstage for a UK newspaper exclusive at the first of two sold-out shows on Friday. Read More on Showbiz breaking cover Jamie Borthwick seen for the first time since EastEnders suspension After her performance, I couldn't help but tell her how much I'm looking forward to her long- rumoured UK dates next year. 'Better journey' Confirming they will indeed be happening, she says: 'I can't wait.' After giving me a massive hug, the down-to-earth and downright lovely star continues: 'You flew all this way just for me? Thank you so much.' And reflecting on the show, she beams: 'I had so much fun.' That's evident from the moment Shakira bursts on to the stage, after a film showed an AI version of the singer with a missing arm, emerging from a pile of sand and putting itself back together. That symbolism is important because this is Shakira's first tour since a torrid spell which threatened to derail not just her career but her life. Huge pop star set to make a spectacular comeback with a string of UK gigs She has been dragged through the Spanish courts over an unpaid tax bill, which was settled in November 2023. At the same time, she had a highly publicised split from former footballer Gerard Pique after 11 years together. It followed allegations he had cheated. The hurt has inspired a lot of Shakira's art. She opens the two-hour show with her 2024 song La Fuerte, which features lyrics about waking up alone and deleting an ex's number. In an empowering speech, she tells the crowd: 'Many of you know that the past years haven't been the easiest for me, right? But who doesn't have a fall here and there, right? What I've learned is that a fall isn't the end, but the beginning of an even better journey.' 10 She opens the two-hour show with her 2024 song La Fuerte Credit: Getty 10 Track La Fuerte features lyrics about waking up alone and deleting an ex's number Credit: Getty 10 Shakira balances her own turmoil with fun and froth — with a whopping 14 outfits on show Credit: Getty 10 Shakira, 48, seems to have discovered the elixir of life, because she looks and moves like someone half her age Credit: Getty And there are more nods to those difficulties in her personal life. During Te Felicit, a song in which she says congratulations to a man who has broken her heart, she tries to reprogram a dancer dressed as a male robot so that he isn't a misogynist. But he still touches her bum and turns out to be a dud in bed when she gets cosy with him in the centre of the stage. During one interlude, there are visuals of a wolf with two cubs, representing the She-Wolf singer and her sons Milan, 12, and Sasha, ten, who both lend their vocals to song Acrostico. But Shakira balances her own turmoil with fun and froth — with a whopping 14 outfits on show. For her second song, the catchy Black Eyed Peas collaboration Girl Like Me, she unzips her jacket to show a silver vest top, which she then tears off to reveal a glittery pink mini dress. There is a sea of lights across the stadium as fans wave their light-up wristbands in unison. And Shakira pulls on everything from sparkly bodysuits to ball gowns and bra tops. I'm told it took ten months to design the show, and given the attention to detail you can see why. At 48, Shakira seems to have discovered the elixir of life, because she looks and moves like someone half her age. By the halfway point of the concert, temperatures are 30C and I have sweat running down my face. Yet Shakira, who is marking three decades since her first headline concert, is running across the stage and twerking without so much as a moist brow. In fact, she looks even fitter and healthier than when she first became a household name in the UK in the early-Noughties. She is in tip-top form for this tour, which kicked off in February and Shakira describes as her 'most ambitious'. She is constantly working out and has two physiotherapists with her on the road. And I can attest that her backstage catering area, where I had dinner before the show, has plenty of healthy options including grilled red snapper, Peruvian chicken and cauliflower steak. A significant part of the show features Spanish-language songs, which have sometimes held the singer back in the UK, given most of us Brits can barely understand a word. Tender moment But as more and more non- English acts gain traction here in Blighty — such as K-Pop stars BTS and Blackpink and Spanish-speaking rapper Bad Bunny — now is her time. At the show she is joined by two special guests: Puerto Rican singer Ozuna, to perform their song Monotonia together for the first time, and Spanish Alejandro Sanz for the danceable La Tortura. During Soltera she pole- dances on a giant letter S before changing the pace for the piano-driven ballad Ultima, which she sings atop a mound of diamonds. When the tour does eventually come to our shores, it is bound to be the English language tunes that keep the audience on their feet. There's an understated rendition of her 2002 belter Underneath Your Clothes, a traditional dance with knives for her megahit Whenever Wherever, and a mass howl-along for She-Wolf, complete by a gigantic wolf image that towers over the audience. Then she throws an on-stage, multi- coloured carnival for 2010 smash-hit World Cup anthem, Waka Waka (This Time For Africa). One surprising omission from the setlist is Beautiful Liar, her 2006 collaboration with Beyonce, which topped the charts here. But in a tender moment, Shakira reveals it was her fellow artist's 2023 Renaissance tour that inspired her to organise her own. Shakira, whose North American dates were upgraded from arenas to stadiums due to overwhelming demand, explains: 'To see this place this packed, it's a dream for me. It's surreal. 'The last time I came to Hard Rock Stadium, I saw Beyonce's show and I said to myself, 'How amazing would it be if I could play the stadium one day?' 'How amazing that tonight, I'm here playing two stadiums. I have the best crowd in the world. You make all of my dreams come true.' There is no doubt that she is stronger than ever before. This show cemented Shakira as a true music icon. 'Seeing as this is such a historic event, we couldn't let them down.' JET setter Rita Ora was back on stage at the World Club Dome festival in Frankfurt on Saturday, mere hours after singing at Washington Pride on Friday. But he won't have long to wait for music from them as I'm told they've almost completed their first album in eight years.

Another EastEnders couple hit the rocks amid ‘cheating' scandal

Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe) is mortified to see her husband George (Colin Salmon) 'cheating' on her with ex-wife Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) in EastEnders next week – and she's not the only former partner he's met up with! But is everything as it seems? The two women have never seen eye to eye, ever since Cindy miraculously 'rose from the dead' in 2023, revealing that she had spent 25 years in witness protection. George was unable to resist temptation and found himself falling for her again, but after marrying Elaine in November, the couple have managed to find steady ground. That was further strengthened by Cindy's affair with former step-son Junior Knight (Micah Balfour), and the subsequent attack she faced on Christmas Day at the hands of Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth). United and stronger than ever before, Elaine was mortified to see George offer his support to Cindy at the re-opening of The Prince Albert earlier this week. Under new management, she'd planned to go all-out with a relaunch celebration, but hadn't managed to sell enough tickets or pull off a big enough publicity campaign to garner attention. There's also the small matter of her being Cindy Beale, Walford's most hated woman. In upcoming scenes, still reeling from her husband's act of betrayal, Elaine decides to show George just how committed she is with a sentimental gift that harks back to his boxing days. As they share a warm moment, Junior bursts in and decides to reveal where his dad was on the night of Cindy's attack. Despite telling everyone that he was attending an illegal boxing match, Junior knows the truth. He was actually visiting ex-wife Sabrina. If that wasn't bad enough, George then spills that she tried to kiss him. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? Jacob furious in Emmerdale as he makes unexpected discovery about Sarah

In an emotional moment, Emmerdale's Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) revealed her cancer diagnosis to Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) and is now suffering with regret. During her check ups as part of her IVF journey to have a baby, Sarah learned she had cervical cancer. The doctors explained they'd need to remove her cervix. While this was devastating to the teen, learning that they'd leave her womb and ovaries softened the blow. She could still carry a baby despite battling a life-halting illness. In shock at the news, a distraught Sarah ran into Jacob and confessed all about her condition. Initially supportive, Jacob quicky became judgemental when he learned Sarah planned to have a baby despite having a short life expectancy. He branded her selfish. But then he learned he was the only person in the world that knew exactly what was going on with his ex and he berated her for keeping it to herself. What a pal. More Trending Sarah had tried to tell her gran and grumpy what was going on ahead of her cancer diagnosis, but they were both too wrapped up in their own worlds having learned Debbie had done a flit to Australia.
