Major airline launches non-reclining business class seats – but here's why I think it's a game-changer

AN airline has revealed its new business class seats - which don't recline.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) is the second airline in the world to launch the static business seats, following Finnair in 2022.

The Japanese airline was named one of the best in the world in this year's Skytrax Awards (coming in fifth place behind Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Emirates).
They currently have flights from London Heathrow to Tokyo, which take just under 14 hours.
And they have since revealed their new business class seats being rolled out next year.
Set to be added to its Boeing 787-9s, "The Room FX" (where the FX stands for Future Experience) is an upgrade on their current The Room seats.
They have has been designed with both Acumen, a British design company who also created seats for BA and Air Japan, and French manufacturer Safran Seats.
The 48 business class seats will be in a 1-2-1 formation, with some of them facing backwards.
The airline claims it will be the "world's largest seat in its class on a mid-sized aircraft'.
Each one comes with their own sliding door - which most airlines now have in their business class seats - and much wider seats.
However, what is also new is the lack of recline.
Instead, the seats will turn into a bed by deploying an adjustable leg rest.

To some, reclining is a must when it comes to splashing out on the upgraded seats and might even be a deal-breaker.
However, I was one of the first to fly on Finnair's new business class pods back in 2023 called the AirLounge which also don't recline.
And I was completely sold on the design.
The lack of recline instead meant I had a lot more space in the seat, which was similar to a seating booth due to how wide it was.
It was more like a curved sofa than a seat, in fact.
And after all, how often do we ever sit in a reclining seat in our normal day-to-day lives?
Instead, I happily sat upright when watching a film or having my dinner, before converting the spacious seat into a bed.
Not only that, but it means the seats are less likely to break and be put out of commission, with the reclining mechanisms being more prone to issues.
So while a non-reclining business seat might seem like a back-step when it comes to innovation - I'd happily go for them over a clunky moving seat.
Here are some of our other business class reviews, including Emirates and the Qatar Airways Qsuite.

Chinese AI firms form alliances to build domestic ecosystem amid US curbs

SHANGHAI, July 28 (Reuters) - China's artificial intelligence companies have announced two new industry alliances, aiming to develop a domestic ecosystem to reduce dependence on foreign tech as they seek to cope with U.S. export restrictions on advanced Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab chipsets. The announcements were timed to coincide with the three-day World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai ending on Monday. The conference also showcased a slew of new products, such as an AI computing system from Huawei ( that experts believe rivals Nvidia's most advanced offering, as well as consumer-friendly products such as several kinds of digital AI glasses. The "Model-Chip Ecosystem Innovation Alliance" brings together Chinese developers of large language models (LLMs) and AI chip manufacturers. "This is an innovative ecosystem that connects the complete technology chain from chips to models to infrastructure," said Zhao Lidong, CEO of Enflame, one of the participating chipmakers. Other manufacturers of graphics processing units (GPUs) in the alliance include Huawei, Biren, and Moore Threads, which have been hit by U.S. sanctions that block them from purchasing advanced tech made with U.S. know-how. The alliance was announced by StepFun, an LLM developer. A second alliance, the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce AI Committee, aims to "promote the deep integration of AI technology and industrial transformation." Participants include SenseTime ( opens new tab, also sanctioned by the U.S. and which has pivoted from facial recognition technology to LLMs. Others are StepFun and another LLM developer, MiniMax, as well as chipmakers Metax and Iluvatar CoreX. One of the most talked about products at the conference was Huawei's CloudMatrix 384 which incorporates 384 of its latest 910C chips and outperforms Nvidia's GB200 NVL72 on some metrics, according to U.S. research firm SemiAnalysis. Huawei's system design capabilities have meant that it has been able to use more chips and system-level innovations to compensate for weaker individual chip performance, SemiAnalysis said. At least six other Chinese computing firms showcased similar "clustering" chip technology. Metax demonstrated an AI supernode featuring 128 C550 chips designed to support large-scale liquid-cooled data centre requirements. Other events included Tencent's ( opens new tab unveiling of its open-source Hunyuan3D World Model 1.0, which the company said enables users to generate interactive 3D environments through text or image prompts. Baidu ( opens new tab announced what it said was next-generation "digital human" technology that helps businesses to create virtual livestreamers. It features "cloning technology" that can replicate a human's voice, tone, and body language from just 10 minutes of sample footage. Alibaba ( opens new tab was among those announcing AI glasses. Its Quark AI Glasses are powered by its Qwen AI model and are due to be released in China by the end of 2025. They will allow users to access the tech giant's map service for easy navigating and to use Alipay by scanning QR codes with voice commands.

Rupee's modest uptick runs into dollar bids from importers, foreign banks

MUMBAI, July 28 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee nudged higher in early trading on Monday, aided by improved risk appetite, but gains were restricted by dollar demand related to importers' month-end payments and from foreign banks. The rupee was at 86.4675 against the U.S. dollar as of 10:20 a.m. IST, up slightly from its close at 86.5150 in the previous session. The local currency has weakened about 0.8% over July so far, hit by outflows from local equities alongside uncertainty about the timing of a U.S.-India trade deal, even as economies such as the European Union, Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam secured deals. Over the weekend, the U.S. struck a framework trade agreement with the EU, imposing a 15% import tariff on most EU goods. The EU also plans to invest some $600 billion in the United States and dramatically increase its purchases of U.S. energy and military equipment, President Donald Trump said on Sunday. The euro strengthened slightly against the dollar after the deal was announced. Meanwhile, the dollar index was little changed at 97.6 on the day while Asian currencies were trading mixed. The rupee is likely to hold an 86.38-86.57 range on Monday and trade with a slight depreciation bias, a trader at a state-run bank said. India's benchmark equity indexes, the BSE Sensex (.BSESN), opens new tab and Nifty 50 (.NSEI), opens new tab, nudged higher on Monday but are nursing losses of over 2.5% each on the month so far, troubled by tepid quarterly earnings and foreign portfolio outflows. A lack of strong foreign inflows, the Reserve Bank of India's ongoing unwinding of short forward dollar positions, and a quiet return to FX reserve accumulation have all weighed on the rupee, said Amit Pabari, managing director at FX advisory firm CR Forex.

Indian shares inch lower as Kotak earnings drag financials, trade deal delay weighs

July 28 (Reuters) - Indian shares inched lower on Monday as weak results from Kotak Mahindra Bank weighed on sentiment, while uncertainty over trade talks with the U.S. added to overall caution. The Nifty 50 (.NSEI), opens new tab fell 0.16% to 24,798.9 points and the BSE Sensex (.BSESN), opens new tab lost 0.2% to 81,325.4 as of 10:03 a.m. IST. The broader small-caps (.NIFSMCP100), opens new tab and mid-caps (.NIFMDCP100), opens new tab lost 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively. Negotiations between India and the United States remained deadlocked over tariff cuts on agriculture and dairy products, dimming hopes of an interim deal ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's August 1 deadline. This is in contrast to a framework trade agreement struck between the U.S. and European Union over the weekend, easing fears of a bigger trade war between the two allies, which account for almost a third of global trade. High-weightage financials (.NIFTYFIN), opens new tab and private banks (.NIFPVTBNK), opens new tab lost 0.2% and 1%, respectively, dragged by a 7% fall in Kotak Mahindra Bank ( opens new tab after it posted a drop in quarterly profit. The IT index (.NIFTYIT), opens new tab lost 0.5%, with Tata Consultancy Services ( opens new tab shedding 1.6% after it announced plans to reduce its workforce by 2% in fiscal year 2026. The Nifty 50 and 30-stock Sensex (.BSESN), opens new tab have logged four consecutive weekly losses due to weak earnings, foreign outflows and uncertainty over the U.S.-India trade deal. "A dull earnings season and the lingering delay in the India-U.S. trade deal have clearly cast a shadow on market sentiment. With valuations still stretched across the board, investors are understandably treading with heightened caution," said G Chokkalingam, founder and head of research at Equinomics Research. Among individual stocks, Mphasis ( opens new tab gained 2.4% on posting quarterly results in-line with estimates and on strong deal bookings, which has boosted the IT company's revenue growth outlook. SBI Cards and Payment Services ( opens new tab lost 3.7% after missing profit estimates in the June quarter.
