Political aggression manifesting in acts of violence like the Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad who slapped a canteen staff at the MLA hostel on Tuesday has also become a cause of concern. Some say the so-called "language war" needs to be curbed urgently.
Puran Singh Rajput, whose family is from Nathdwara in Rajasthan, runs a grocery shop in Mira Road.
"I was born here and know Marathi, but my father who has been in the city for three decades cannot speak Marathi. I fear that tomorrow any activist can confront my father and humiliate him just because he does not speak Marathi," said Rajput.

A taxi driver from UP, who did not want to be named, said his grasp of Marathi is "30%". "I've been working in Mumbai for 25 years and picked it up on the job. I can answer basic questions, if someone wants to test me," he said, adding that this inadequacy has now led to a sense of insecurity.

He said Indians should be free to work anywhere in the country, and not be constrained by language. "Maharashtrians live and work in different states and no one demands that they learn Bhojpuri in Bihar or Oriya in Odisha. Then why do we, in Maharashtra, learn Marathi? This is nothing but politics," he said.
Many say learning the language is an advantage but forcing someone to speak it is akin to fuelling linguistic chauvinism, and using violence to "punish" those who cannot speak this language is simply lawlessness.
They blame misuse of social media to amplify acts of violence perpetrated in the name of linguistic supremacy. Shaikh Abdullah, whose Kurla-based bakery employs around 200 workers from different states, said, to win voters ahead of BMC polls, political workers are coining bigoted slogans and creating a climate of fear.
"We've people from different states working for us. It does not matter if someone is a Bihari or Maharashtrian or from Kerala as long as he or she works efficiently.
But there is a fear that someone might hurt them if they fail the language test," said Abdullah.
Captain Nalin Bilochan Pandey, originally from Bihar, runs a shipping company in Navi Mumbai. "There are 25 employees, including seafarers and 90% of them are Maharashtrians. It is worrying that, for political gain, some leaders encourage their cadre to resort to violence against those who can't speak Marathi. One of my Maharashtrian employees failed in Marathi in matriculation exam while my daughter who has a Bihari origin topped in Marathi in her school at the same Board exam," said Pandey.

Speaking at the "We are Marathi, We are Indian' workshop organised by the Congress in Mira-Bhayandar town of neighbouring Thane district, he said that Marathi must be preserved—not just because it is a language, but because it is a culture, an identity and the spirit of Maharashtra. Congress is not opposed to Hindi language but strongly resists the compulsory imposition of a third language, he said. "However, vandalism and violence in the name of Marathi will not be tolerated. We will not resort to violence; instead, we will teach and preserve Marathi. Everyone in Maharashtra is Marathi anyone who tries to mess with it, will have to face us," he warned. Speaking further, Sapkal said the forced promotion of Hindi originates from former RSS chief Golwalkar's book 'Bunch of Thoughts'. Mentioning that the BJP and the RSS do not respect the Indian Constitution, he said that India is known for unity in diversity, but the BJP wants to impose the idea of One Nation, One Election, One Language. "This toxic ideology stems from a Bunch of Thoughts. BJP and RSS aim to push the narrative of Hindi, Hindutva, and Hindu Rashtra. It is with this intent that the BJP government has deliberately triggered this controversy," he alleged. Explaining the choice of Mira Road as the venue for the event, Sapkal said, "... Punjab anti-sacrilege bill referred to select committee, report in 6 months
1 2 Chandigarh: The Punjab assembly on Tuesday unanimously decided to refer the 'Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill, 2025,' which proposes life imprisonment for sacrilege, to a select committee of the House. This committee will consult with stakeholders and seek public opinion on the proposed legislation before its enactment, with a mandate to submit its report within six months. Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann proposed sending it to the panel. "Let's not be in a hurry and take suggestions of 3.5 crore people. The panel can solicit the views of all the social, religious, and other organisations," Mann said. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan announced that the panel would seek public input and submit its report in six months. The speaker will constitute the select committee, which Mann suggested could include representatives of all political parties. Under the bill, any person found guilty of sacrilege may face imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life. The guilty shall also be liable to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh, which may extend up to Rs 10 lakh. Govt committed to providing jobs to skilled youth: CM
1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday emphasised equipping the youth with cutting-edge skills such as artificial intelligence (AI) and digital literacy and said the state govt has over the last 8 years taken several decisive steps to transform 'scale into skill'. "Skilled youth are the backbone of a self-reliant India and the double-engine govt is committed to providing jobs and self-employment opportunities," Yogi said during his inaugural address at the Skill Fair and Exhibition on World Youth Skills Day. He said as part of this digital empowerment mission, the state is distributing smartphones and tablets to 2 crore youth, of which 50 lakh have already benefited. Addressing the gathering, he said UP holds immense potential, with almost 60% of its 25 crore population falling in the working-age category. "For this, we are making consistent efforts in generating employment for youth," he said. Yogi noted that this year's theme — "Youth Empowerment through AI and Digital Skills" — is particularly significant for the state, as it aligns with the govt's broader vision of steering the youth toward a tech-driven future. "Every youth deserves access to training and employment that reflects their talents and aspirations," he said. Speaking about the state's investment-driven growth, the CM highlighted that over the past eight years, enhanced law and order and investor-friendly policies resulted in the implementation of investment proposals worth over Rs 15 lakh crore which in turn created lakhs of jobs. Referring to the CM Yuva Scheme, Yogi said youth with skill development, ITI, polytechnic, or academic degrees are being offered interest-free loans up to Rs 5 lakh. Launched on Jan 24 this year, the scheme has already benefited over 50,000 youth. Under this, only the principal amount needs to be paid by the beneficiaries while the govt covers the interest. An additional loan facility of up to Rs 7.5 lakh will also be made available for scaling up. He also highlighted the govt's efforts in reviving traditional industries through flagship schemes like One District One Product (ODOP) and Mukhyamantri Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana. He said under ODOP, over 1.5 crore people gained employment while more than 1 lakh artisans and craftsmen received training and toolkits under the Vishwakarma Yojana. These initiatives, he said, significantly strengthened the rural economy. Yogi also lauded the success stories of 15 youth who were recognised for their outstanding work. "Of these, many were aimless after completing formal education, but skill development transformed their lives. Today, they are earning between Rs 25,000 and Rs 1,00,000 per month," the CM said. Underscoring the need for greater synergy between educational institutions and industries, Yogi apprised the audience about an initiative where students engaged in industrial training complete their project work within industries, thereby gaining real-world experience. As part of this, the govt will offer a monthly stipend of Rs 5,000 for one year under the PM and CM internship schemes. After the internship, industries may choose to recruit the interns, or the experience will help them secure employment elsewhere. Highlighting the role of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Yogi said the policy empowers students to pursue academic degrees and skill-based training simultaneously. He praised the collaborative efforts of the secondary education department and ITIs, which are now offering vocational education within schools, allowing students to pursue dual degrees or certificate programmes. He also pointed to emerging opportunities in futuristic sectors such as drone technology, robotics, artificial intelligence and 3D printing while reaffirming the continued demand for skilled professionals in traditional trades like plumbing, electrical work and air conditioning repair. "Our goal is to align youth training with market demands to ensure maximum employability," he said. Director, UP Skill Development Mission, Pulkit Khare, said the CM presented the 'Youth Icon' award to 15 outstanding youths and handed over appointment letters to 11 candidates during the event. He also flagged off five skill chariots to spread awareness across the state. In addition, industry representatives were honoured with the 'Industry Ambassador' award. An MoU was also signed with Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Prayagraj, appointing it as a knowledge partner.
