ESPN analyst ranks John Mateer ahead of Arch Manning for 2025

USA Today17-07-2025
By the end of the week, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer may find himself a preseason All-SEC selection. For now, he'll have to settle - ahem - for being right next to the Heisman Trophy favorite.
A day after On3's Andy Staples rated Mateer the fifth best quarterback in the SEC, ESPN college football analyst Jordan Rodgers did one better for the Washington State transfer. Rodgers slotted Mateer fourth, one spot ahead of Texas quarterback, and odds-on Heisman Trophy favorite, Arch Manning.
Rodgers took heat, as he is wont to encounter, for Manning's placement, jokingly calling Manning "hot garbage." Regardless, Mateer has found himself consistently in the prognosticator crowd's top five.
"I have John Mateer one spot ahead of Arch," Rodgers said. "I love this kid."
Mateer led all of FBS last year in total touchdowns with the Cougars, throwing for 27 and running for 15. When his offensive coordinator at Washington State, Ben Arbuckle, left Pullman to take the same job at Oklahoma, Mateer followed him out the door. Along with California-Berkeley transfer Jaydn Ott at running back, the new-look Sooners offense has those crystal-ball lookers believing the Sooners will improve and could challenge for a College Football Playoff berth if things go just right.
SEC media will vote on the league's preseason all-conference teams and projected order of finish later this week at the conclusion of media days.

Georgia recruiting target Nascar McCoy announces commitment

The Georgia Bulldogs have had success recruiting defensive backs, but they lost out on a four-star on Saturday. Four-star safety Nascar McCoy committed to the Ole Miss Rebels. McCoy chose Ole Miss over Georgia, Miami, Texas A&M, and Michigan. McCoy is a four-star safety from the class of 2026, according to ESPN. He stands at 6-foot-2, weighs 180 pounds, and plays football for Buford High School in Buford, Georgia, similar to Georgia safety KJ Bolden. McCoy marks Ole Miss' third defensive back commit from July, joining Iverson McCoy, a three-star cornerback, and Craig Tutt, a four-star safety. Overall, Ole Miss has the No. 19 recruiting class in the nation and No. 9 in the SEC. However, the Rebels' recruiting class lags far behind the Georgia Bulldogs, especially in the secondary. Georgia's class is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation and the SEC. In the secondary, Georgia currently has seven commits; four-stars Justice Fitzpatrick, Caden Harris (who flipped from Vanderbilt), Chace Calicut, Zech Fort, and Jordan Smith, along with three-stars Kealan Jones and Tyriq Green. Overall, secondary coach Donte Williams is ranked as the No. 1 recruiter in the 247Sports database. Georgia misses out on McCoy, who is the No. 37 safety in the nation and the No. 49 prospect from Georgia. Inter Milan President Confirms ‘Oaktree Ready To Invest Big This Summer' – Adds ‘Chivu Not A Second Choice'

Inter Milan President Beppe Marotta confirms owners Oaktree Capital are 'ready to invest big' this summer, and Cristian Chivu is 'not a second choice.' The Nerazzurri President addressed the summer transfer spending plans in the team's preseason press conference, as reported by FCInterNews. Inter Milan's summer transfer window is now in full swing. It has already been a busy summer for Inter. The month of June saw coach Simone Inzaghi leave as coach after four years, and Cristian Chivu arrive to replace him. Meanwhile, Inter have completed three major signings already. Petar Sucic, Luis Henrique, and Ange-Yoan Bonny have all arrived. Meanwhile, Inter are reportedly pursuing Ademola Lookman now. This has been a summer which has seen Inter look to lower the average age of the squad. Reports that Oaktree Capital are ready to invest in signings provided the players are young, have room to grow and resale value, look to have been confirmed. Marotta: 'Oaktree Ready To Spend Big This Summer, Chivu Not A Second Choice' PASADENA, CALIFORNIA – JUNE 17: Cristian Chivu, Head Coach of FC Internazionale Milano (Photo by) Inter Milan President Beppe Marotta made clear that 'the owners are very keen on the development and increasing the value of our club.' 'The new stadium is right at the heart of Inter and Oaktree,' he said. 'Back to sporting matters, we ended last season going right to the end in all competitions. We lost the Champions League final, and we came in second by a hair in the league.' 'Now we have to try and close that gap,' said the Inter President. 'But getting there is very difficult. We've reached great things, but today we're starting again with the same ambitions.' Marotta made clear that 'inter have a history and a record to defend.' 'There's no point hiding behind platitudes like 'We have to finish in the top four.' We want to win, that's everyone's goal.' 'Our new cycle begins with a new coach,' Marotta continued. 'Cristian Chivu.' 'I've read that he was a backup solution, a second choice. Nothing could be further from the truth.' The Nerazzurri President commented that 'When Oaktree and I outlined the model for the team we were building, we tried to identify the right kind of coach.' 'The fact that we also approached someone else doesn't diminish Chivu's standing,' Marotta said, hinting at Inter's efforts to appoint Cesc Fabregas. 'On the contrary. It helped us strengthen our idea regarding a young coach. Because he has one advantage above all: He knows the environment, he understands the values of the club.' Meanwhile, Marotta acknowledged that 'the model has changed' at Inter. 'Oaktree, with great foresight, have shown a willingness to make significant figures available to the directors,' he continued. 'To invest in specific age profiles.' 'We've made a few signings already. And the transfer window is still open, there's still a month left to go.' 'So we'll keep going,' Marotta assured.

Jim Keller Will Lead Ad Sales for FanDuel Sports Network

Jim Keller, a veteran of ad sales efforts at Warner Bros. Discovery, Hulu and NBCUniversal, has been named to lead similar operation at FanDuel Sports Network, the collection of regional sports media outlets that were previously housed under Fox Corp., then large TV broadcaster Sinclair. Keller will serve as executive vice president of advertising and sponsorship sales for FanDuel's networks, which include outlets that serve Detroit, Oklahoma, Ohio and Wisconsin. The company also holds a stake in YES Network, the home to the New York Yankees. 'Jim is a proven leader with an exceptional track record across linear, streaming, and digitalplatforms,' said Eric Ratchman, chief revenue officer of Main Street Sports Group, to whom Keller will report, in a statement. 'As FanDuel Sports Network redefines what local sports media can be — more dynamic , more engaging , and more impactful — Jim's leadership will be key in creating smarter advertising experiences that deliver real value to our brand partners and local fans alike.' FanDuel Sports Network was previously branded under the Bally's name, part of a deal between the casino operator and Main Street's predecessor, Diamond Sports Group. Diamond filed for bankruptcy in 2023, and emerged from it in 2025, with a new naming rights deal in place with FanDuel and a new operating name. Keller was most recently chief revenue officer at Fuse Media. He has led efforts to sell ads for Discovery+ and national ads at Hulu. 'There's nothing more powerful than the connection a fan has with their local team, andFanDuel Sports Network is building a platform that truly honors that connection,' said Keller, in a prepared statement. 'From my earliest days as a sports seller at NBC Sports, to leading some of the industry's most innovative ad strategies, I've always believed that the strongest media experiences are rooted in content and community. FanDuel Sports Network's focus on building relevant, local, multiplatform fan experiences is exactly what the industry and advertisers need right now, and Icouldn't be more excited to help drive the next phase of growth.' Keller, whose hire is effective immediately, will be based in New York. Best of Variety New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week 'Harry Potter' TV Show Cast Guide: Who's Who in Hogwarts?
