‘Fear of another u-turn by Nitish': Kanhaiya on Modi govt's CM-PM removal bills

Hindustan Times10 hours ago
In a dig at Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and his majority partner BJP, Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar said on Thursday that the Modi government's recent bills in Parliament, which propose new norms for removing leaders arrested on serious charges, were aimed at preventing BJP allies like Nitish from 'making yet another about-turn'. Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar was at a press conference as part of Rahul Gandhi-led 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar.(PTI File)
He named Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, too, as one such ally in the BJP-led NDA.
The BJP, which does not have a Lok Sabha majority on its own, remains in power at the Centre with the support of Nitish Kumar's JDU and Naidu's Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
Kanhaiya was speaking at a press conference in Lakhisarai as part of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra'.
'The BJP is sending a signal to Nitish ji that 'if you try to do yet another about turn, we will frame you in some case, keep you behind bars for 30 days and get you sacked'. All his MLAs of the JDU will then be bought over and made to sing 'Narendra Modi zindabad',' he said.
Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday moved a trio of bill in the Lok Sabha, which seek to allow for removal of the prime minister, chief ministers, and other ministers if they are arrested on serious charges for a period of 30 days.
The Opposition has pointed out that these bills speak of mere allegations, not requiring conviction by a court. They fear central probe agencies would arrested Opposition leaders and force them out using these rules.
Kanhaiya said 'arrogance of power' made the BJP miss that if these bills become law, 'they will hit the BJP hard once it is out of power'.
Earlier, Congress ally RJD's Tejashwi Yadav made similar assertions. 'They are bringing this for Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu. They have only one job – to blackmail. If PMLA is slapped in ED cases, there can be no quick bail. These are torture tactics.'

Address concerns of farmers, workers on priority, demands CPI(M)

The CPI(M) Andhra Pradesh State Committee has urged the Central and State governments to act immediately to address the hardships being faced by the farmers, workers, and citizens in the wake of floods, soaring power tariffs, and privatisation. Addressing the media in Vijayawada on Thursday, CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao, along with Central Committee member K. Lokanatham and State Secretariat member K. Prabhakara Reddy, outlined the resolutions passed at the State Secretariat meeting. Polit Bureau members B.V. Raghavulu and U. Vasuki participated. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the party demanded ₹10,000 per acre compensation for crop losses in the Godavari region, urgent repairs to the tanks, canals, and roads, and a farmer-friendly crop insurance scheme fully funded by the Central and State governments. He said the party opposed land allocation to the LuLu Group malls in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, calling it harmful to small retailers, and urged use of lands for public and RTC development. He condemned the alleged forcible installation of smart meters and an additional ₹12,000 crore tariff burden. He said the party would observe August 28 as 'Pratijna Dinam' to commemorate the Basheerbagh firing incident. Mr. Srinivasa Rao appealed to the political parties to back the INDIA bloc's Vice-Presidential nominee Justice Sudarshan Reddy, and criticised the YSRCP, TDP, and JSP for siding with the BJP-led NDA on the issue. He further said that the party opposed the alleged privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and forced land acquisitions, and demanded priority to tribal rights and Polavaram oustees' rehabilitation.

1996 dhoti-pulling case against one of BJP's 1st 2 LS MPs dropped

representative image AHMEDABAD: Twenty-nine years after then Gujarat minister Atmaram Patel's dhoti was pulled during a BJP function at Sardar Patel Stadium, a city sessions court on Thursday dropped the criminal case against former Union minister A K Patel, one of the two first BJP Lok Sabha members. Another BJP politician, Mangaldas Patel, was also an accused in the case, registered at Naranpura police station under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) for allegedly assaulting and pulling off the minister's dhoti in 1996. The accused had backed Shankersinh Vaghela at the time of his rift with then chief minister Keshubhai Patel. The incident occurred immediately after BJP's Atal Bihari Vajpayee had finished addressing the party gathering. Public prosecutor Sudhir Brahmbhatt filed an application under CrPC Section 321 seeking withdrawal of the case against the 95-year-old former MP. The co-accused in the case, Mangaldas Patel, and witness (victim) Atmaram Patel, had passed away during the pendency of the trial. After hearing the submissions, additional sessions judge H G Pandya observed: "The case involves an internal political party dispute that occurred 28 years ago, and the victim, Atmarambhai Maganbhai Patel, has passed away... The public prosecutor's request to withdraw the case appears to be made with bona fide intentions, and sufficient consideration has been given to withdrawing the prosecution. Therefore, considering the records and the nature of the offence, it is appropriate to grant permission to withdraw the prosecution under Section 321 of CrPC in the interest of justice. " Earlier, on Jan 30, 2018, a metropolitan court had dropped a related criminal case against 41 BJP workers and politicians, including VHP leader Pravin Togadia and BJP MLA from Daskroi Babu Jamna Patel.

Rahul Mamkootathil as MLA: Onus on Congress, says Govindan

T'puram: CPM state secretary M V Govindan on Thursday said it was up to the Congress party to decide whether Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil should resign as a member of the legislative assembly following the sexual harassment charges against him. Govindan said the allegations against the MLA were not vague or unsupported by evidence, and hence the Congress leadership should consider such factors and act appropriately. The CPM state secretary also criticised opposition leader V D Satheesan. He said Satheesan did not rise to the occasion even as a girl in a family close to him informed about some unwelcome approach by Mamkoottathil. "According to Satheesan, he handled the issue like a father figure. But as an opposition leader, he failed to act proactively. It was after this issue that Mamkoottathil was chosen as a candidate in the Palakkad byelection," Govindan said. A disgrace to assembly: Shailaja Meanwhile in Kozhikode, CPM leader K K Shailaja said that Mamkootathil continuing as the MLA is a disgrace to the state's legislative assembly. In a Facebook post, she said that revelations that shook public conscience emerged against Mamkootathil, including forcing a woman to consider abortion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Shailaja added that such serious allegations cannot be brushed aside merely with a resignation from party posts. She said Congress leadership, which ignored repeated complaints against Mamkootathil and even gave him the opportunity to become a people's representative, is collectively responsible for giving answers on this matter. She alleged that it had become evident — especially during the Vadakara parliamentary election — that a group operating under the leadership of Mamkootathil and Shafi Parambil posts abusive comments targeting women using fake social media IDs. "Since these fake IDs are deleted after posting such comments, it was difficult to initiate legal action," said the CPM leader who unsuccessfully contested in Vadakara during the 2024 parliamentary election. Now, left with no alternative, Congress leadership, which sheltered such individuals for political gain, is forced to respond. Legal action must be taken against Mamkootathil, she said.
