American Express has ‘major' refresh in the pipeline for its exclusive platinum cardholders

American Express has significant updates in the pipeline for its Platinum credit cards.
The company's U.S. consumer and business Platinum Cards are slated to get 'major' updates 'later this year,' American Express said.

American Express executive Howard Grosfield said Monday in a statement that the company is 'going to take these Cards to the next level, not only in what they offer in travel, dining and lifestyle benefits, but also in how they look and feel, to meet the evolving needs of our customers.'
American Express touted the airport lounge access as well as the dining and hotel benefits that the well-known credit card already provides its Platinum cardholders, while revealing its plans to make updates.
The company has offered the Consumer Platinum Card in the U.S. since 1984 and has given it various refreshes over the years.
The new updates in the pipeline for American Express Consumer and Business Platinum credit cards will mark the company's 'largest investment ever in a Card refresh,' per the company.

Those who hold the Business Platinum Card can expect 'more benefits they can use to help their companies grow' from the upcoming refresh, American Express said.

American Express Business Platinum Card holders already have a 'flexible spending limit that adapts based on purchase, payment and credit history, business and travel benefits, rich rewards on business expenses, virtual cards and access to cashflow management tools,' as well as dining, lounge and hotel benefits, according to the company.
American Express isn't the only credit card issuer that has updates in the works for its high-end card.

As some popular travel credit cards boost annual fees and amend benefits, experts say it's time to reassess which cards — if any — merit a spot in your wallet. "Annual fees are not inherently bad; you just need to make sure that you're getting value from [the card]," said Ted Rossman, an industry analyst at Bankrate. "It's getting harder to maximize, though." In June, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card raised the annual fee to $795. That's a 45% jump from $550, its previous annual cost. Earlier this summer, Capital One announced that, starting in February, customers using its Venture X Rewards and Venture X Business cards — each of which have $395 annual fees — will no longer be able to bring guests to the lounges free of charge. That follows news from American Express that travelers who have an American Express Platinum card — which costs $695 a year — must spend $75,000 in eligible purchases before they can bring up to two guests to an airport lounge. Previously, there was no minimum spend and cardholders could bring up to two guests for free, according to NerdWallet. Here's how to decide if a travel credit card is worth the investment. A travel rewards card isn't likely to be a good value if you're carrying a balance from month to month, experts say. "Any interest that you owe will easily diminish the value of any of these benefits," said Sally French, a travel expert at NerdWallet. It may also be harder to pay down debt. While the average annual percentage rate for credit cards is about 20.13%, the typical rate on premium travel cards can be closer to 25% to 30%, according to Rossman. "Generally speaking, rewards cards charge higher rates," he said. You'll come across two kinds of travel credit cards. Co-branded credit cards are usually tied to specific airlines, hotels or even cruise chains, and provide benefits that are more valuable at that brand, French said. If you frequently use a specific airline or tend to stay with a certain hotel chain, a co-branded credit card may be worth it, experts say. An airline credit card, for instance, might have benefits like free checked bags, priority boarding, premium status tiers and sometimes discounts or points for spending at that airline. "It's only free check [checked?] bags on that airline," said French. "Your Southwest credit card won't get you anything on United." Some airlines belong to partnership networks such as Star Alliance, Oneworld or SkyTeam. If you're looking at a brand-specific card, see if the company has partnerships that allow you to transfer points or miles to allied brands. On the other hand, general travel credit cards are "really good for people who don't want to be married to a specific brand," as you can earn and use rewards more broadly, French said. Some travel credit cards do not charge annual fees; for those that do, the cost can range from $95 to upwards of $500 a year, per NerdWallet. Keep in mind that travel credit cards with little to no fees may not offer the same level of benefits and rewards as paid cards. Both kinds of travel cards tend to have a set of similar perks, including credits for TSA PreCheck and other pre-screening memberships, and big sign-on bonuses when you spend a certain amount of money on the card within a short period of opening it. As a frequent traveler, such benefits can help make the card fee worth the cost, experts say. To assess the benefits of the card, look at a detailed list of the perks on the issuer's website, said French. A card might charge an annual fee, but say it includes one free checked bag for you and a certain amount of guests. With just that perk, the card could pay for itself within a trip or two for a family. While some of the perks and rewards can seem enticing, it's important to consider your travel habits and lifestyle, said Rossman. Also consider what your credit habits are like, experts say. For those who do not travel often, a travel credit card without an annual fee is probably going to be the best option, said French. "You don't want to be paying an annual fee on a credit card that has benefits that you might not use," she said. If you travel frequently in a given year and typically with a specific airline, a co-branded credit card can make sense, French said. If you currently hold a card with a high annual fee, but realize you're not getting the most use out of it, you may be able to downgrade to a less expensive or free card offered by the issuer, Rossman said. Doing so will be better for your credit rather than closing out the card altogether, he said.

Second Quarter 2025 Highlights Delivered Financial Results Ahead of Expectations Revenue grew 1% year over year to $631 million. Adjusted EBITDA grew 4% year over year to $133 million, and exceeded $500 million over the last twelve months. Free Cash Flow generation of $27 million. Within this, Travel Revenue increased $1 million, in line with expectations, and Product and Professional Services Revenue increased $5 million, or 4%. The increase in total revenue was primarily due to increased Product and Professional Services Revenue and favorable foreign exchange impact, partially offset by a modest decline in Yield driven by the continued shift to digital transactions and fixed elements of revenue. On a constant currency basis, revenue was largely flat year over year. Total operating expenses of $597 million increased $14 million, or 2%, primarily due to restructuring charges related to cost savings initiatives, which are expected to be a future benefit to the Company. Increased sales and marketing and technology and content costs were largely offset by decreased cost of revenue (excluding depreciation and amortization), general and administrative expenses and depreciation and amortization. Adjusted Operating Expenses increased marginally by $2 million to $500 million. Operating income of $34 million decreased $8 million, or 21%, driven by higher operating expenses primarily due to restructuring charges, partially offset by higher revenue as discussed above. Net income of $15 million decreased $12 million, or 48%, primarily due to the decline in operating income as discussed above, unfavorable foreign exchange impact and higher income taxes, partially offset by favorable fair value movements on earnout derivative liabilities and lower interest expense. Adjusted EBITDA of $133 million increased $6 million, or 4%. Revenue growth and operating leverage resulted in Adjusted EBITDA margin expansion of 70 bps to 21%. Net cash from operating activities totaled $57 million, a decrease of $16 million, or 23%, primarily due to comparison versus one-time elements of the Egencia working capital benefits in the prior year and higher cash taxes, partially offset by lower interest payments. On Jul. 18, shares of AXP tumbled 2.4% despite delivering better-than-expected Q2 results. The company's total revenue net of interest expense grew 9.3% year-over-year to a record $17.9 billion, with non-interest revenues up 8.5% and net interest income up 12.3%. The top-line figure exceeded the consensus estimates by 1%. Moreover, on the earnings front, its adjusted EPS of $4.08 improved 16.9% from the year-ago quarter, topping Wall Street estimates by 5.7%. The strong performance was supported by record card member spending and robust demand for the company's premium products. Additionally, AXP reaffirmed its fiscal 2025 guidance, expecting revenue growth of 8% to 10%, and EPS to be between $15 and $15.50. For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect AXP's EPS to grow 14.3% year over year to $15.26. The company's earnings surprise history is promising. It topped the consensus estimates in each of the last four quarters. Among the 29 analysts covering the stock, the consensus rating is a "Moderate Buy' which is based on eight 'Strong Buy,' two "Moderate Buy,' 17 'Hold,' and two 'Strong Sell' ratings. This configuration is less bullish than a month ago, with nine analysts suggesting a 'Strong Buy' rating and one recommending 'Strong Sell.' On Jul. 21, John Pancari from Evercore Inc. (EVR) maintained a "Hold" rating on AXP with a price target of $330, implying a 12% potential upside from the current levels. The mean price target of $321.38 represents a 9% premium from AXP's current price levels, while the Street-high price target of $375 suggests an ambitious upside potential of 27.2%.
