Indian Express7 days ago
The 20-year-old engineering student accused of intentionally reversing his Thar SUV into an elderly businessman after knocking him off his scooter was on Thursday remanded to six days in police custody by the Third Additional Munsiff's court in Jammu.
After reviewing the case diary and the medical fitness certificate of the accused, the court noted that the police investigation is at a preliminary stage. Also acknowledging that one of the charges — Section 109 BNS — is of a serious and non-bailable nature, it granted the police custody of the accused, identified as Mannan Anand, until August 5.
Instructing the police to get a medical examination conducted on the accused every 24 hours, the court directed the police to produce him before a competent court before the expiry of the remand period.
Anand, who was absconding after the Thar he was allegedly driving hit 68-year-old Kamal Dutt in the upmarket Gandhi Nagar area of Jammu on Sunday afternoon, was arrested on Wednesday.
The victim was moved to Fortis Hospital in Punjab on Wednesday after his condition worsened at the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu.
The J&K Police had multiple teams looking for the driver of the vehicle after CCTV footage of the incident went viral and drew outrage. The footage shows the Thar hitting Kamal Dutt's scooter while overtaking another vehicle, causing the latter to fall. The car then drives forward, and when Dutt stands up, it reverses onto him.
Subsequently, the driver is seen coming out of the SUV and standing over an unconscious Dutt before getting back in the vehicle and driving away.
While the footage showed passersby watching, no one came to Dutt's aid. Dutt was eventually taken to hospital by his family members who arrived at the scene after hearing about the incident. He is said to have suffered severe head injuries.

‘Performed stunts, endangered lives': 3 arrested after viral video shows luxury cars blocking traffic in Gurgaon

An Aston Martin and a Mercedes convertible among more than a dozen high-end cars can be seen blocking traffic on a road in Gurgaon, a few men are clicking videos of the convoy, and others are sitting in the cars posing for the camera — the chaos, which allegedly disrupted traffic on the Dwarka Expressway on Monday evening, was captured in a purported video, which went viral on social media and triggered outrage. Police on Tuesday arrested three men and seized their vehicles over the incident in Sector 108. The men allegedly blocked a key stretch when they were trying to perform a stunt, said officers. The stunt involved reckless driving that endangered lives, the police said. Based on the video, a case was registered on Monday. The three accused have been identified as Himanshu (22) from Damdama Road in Sohna, and Sagar (24) and Kaushal (24), both from Peeragarhi in Delhi. 'Three vehicles used in the stunt, two Thar SUVs and one Fortuner, were seized from the accused,' a police spokesperson said, adding, 'The incident occurred on the 75-Foot Road, near a signal close to Sobha City, under the jurisdiction of the Rajendra Park police station.' In the purported video, loud sirens could be heard, and a few men could be seen sitting in the Aston Martin. Men could be seen leaning out of windows in several cars that were behind the Aston Martin. At the end of the clip, the bevy of cars could be seen dispersing in an unorderly manner, taking U-turns from the wrong side of the road. 'The investigation is ongoing and we are looking at more CCTV feeds. As per the findings, as needed we will seize and arrest the remaining vehicles and guilty (respectively) as well', the spokesperson added. The video drew criticism online with many demanding strict action against the accused.

Panchkula: ₹25-lakh relief for family of Ambala biker killed in mishap

Nearly a year after a 32-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car in Ambala in September 2024, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded a compensation of ₹25.41 lakh to his widow, four minor children and elderly parents. Manish's wife, their four minor children and his elderly parents filed the claim petition in October 2024. (Getty image) According to the family's plea, on September 16, 2024, the victim, Manish Kumar, a resident of Shahzadpur, Ambala, was returning home on his motorcycle after purchasing vegetables from Naraingarh market around 7.30 am. As he reached near Sugar Mill in Banoundi village, Ambala, a Mahindra Thar, driven by Aaditya Arora, approached from the opposite direction. The Thar, reportedly being driven rashly and negligently, collided with Manish's motorcycle and another two-wheeler. The impact caused Arora to lose control over the vehicle, causing it to overturn into a ditch. He then fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle, the family alleged. Manish sustained severe injuries in the crash and succumbed to them. An FIR was subsequently registered against Arora under Sections 281 and 106 of the BNS at the Shahzadpur police station in Ambala. Manish's wife, their four minor children and his elderly parents filed the claim petition in October 2024. Disposing of the petition, the tribunal directed Adatiya Arora (car driver), M/s Lush and Blush Graphics (owner) and Universal Sompo General Insurance Company (insurer) to jointly pay ₹25.41 lakh to the family. Despite their initial denial of allegations, the tribunal ruled in favour of the claimants. The family is also entitled to an annual interest of 6% on the compensation amount, effective from the date of filing the claim petition until full realisation of the amount, the court held.

Two Ferozepur men dies in Kathua mishap

Two persons died while three others from Ferozepur sustained severe injuries when their SUV plunged into a gorge near a sharp turn near Lakhanpur in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours of Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Pawan Madan and Mohinder Bajaj, both residents of Ferozepur. The injured — Sunny Arora, Sudhir Khosla and Anil Monga — were initially taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kathua and later shifted to a private hospital in Ferozepur. The SUV they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir early Sunday. (HT) Sunny Arora, who managed to escape through a broken windowpane, used a passerby's phone to alert Robin Popli, a member of the Shri Neelkanth Mahadev Seva Samiti, about the incident. Emergency services reached the spot and took Bajaj and Madan to the hospital where they were declared dead. According to Popli, the group had departed from Ferozepur for Chandrakot (Ramban) base camp to conclude langar (community kitchen) services organised for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims. The accident occurred around midnight when the driver, Mohinder Bajaj, reportedly failed to spot a sharp curve near Lakhanpur. The Shri Neelkanth Mahadev Seva Samiti has been serving langar at Chandrakot for the Amarnath pilgrims for the past 18 years. This year the service was halted prematurely following a landslide on July 31. The mishap deaths have cast a pall of gloom over Ferozepur's social and religious circles where the deceased were widely respected for their community service.
