"What Else Can One Do?": R Ashwin Tears Into Ajit Agarkar Over Shock Selection Call

NDTV7 hours ago
As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar announced the India squad for the Asia Cup 2025, some bizarre selection calls were made. While Shubman Gill made a return to the T20I setup, that too as a vice-captain, there was no place for young opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had arguably done everything right since being inducted into the team. Jaiswal was even India's backup opener in the T20 World Cup 2024 but is now forced to take a fresh look at his career. Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India's most tactically astute cricketers over the last decade, expressed utter shock at some of Agarkar's selection calls.
In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that the fact that Jaiswal wasn't picked for the Asia Cup can now force him to reevaluate the manner in which he plays. The southpaw might start to play for himself rather than the team because of the Asia Cup setback.
"As Jaiswal got a chance in Test cricket, he took it with both hands. Easily the most successful Test batter that has made debut for India in recent past. He excelled in whatever format you gave him his opportunity to play and what else can one do other than excellence? He excelled and lost his chance in that slot.
"Now, he has to go back the drawing board again but I really wish him well for getting a shot at it. The point is, Jaiswal didn't lose any opportunity there was even leadership role left over from him. Then now only one more slot remaining which will be Abhishek Sharma 's spot where they have to fight each other," Ashwin said.

Just like him, my biggest fear now is that he will start thinking about his place the next time he gets a chance and won't play the brand of cricket he plays. pic.twitter.com/fY0XxTFVtx

The former India spinner also highlighted Jaiswal's incredible strike-rate in the shortest format, once again pointing out that the opener 'doesn't play for himself, but the team', yet he had to suffer this setback as Shubaman Gill was to be drafted into the team.
"He has a strike rate of 165 in this format as well. It is very difficult to find someone like Jaiswal because he doesn't play for himself sometimes. I have seen many such batters who don't even play themselves and Shreyas too. They do not play on their own, the ball is there to hit they will take that chance. For average players it's less but more so when it comes down to strike rates or scoring goals. Such brand players took quite some time to get into India.

India's Asia Cup 2025 Squad If Only IPL 2025 Performances Were Considered

After much contemplation and some bold decisions, India's Asia Cup 2025 squad was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar on Tuesday. With T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav in company, Agarkar left many surprised as he confirmed the return of Shubman Gill to India's T20I squad, in the capacity of a vice-captain. The squad selection didn't come from a single school of thought, with both continuity, form and potential being considered while naming the 15-member squad. India head coach Gautam Gambhir, however, had once said that the country's shortest format team should be based on performances in the IPL. If only IPL 2025 was considered for Asia Cup selection, here's how the 15-member roster might have looked: Sai Sudharsan - Opener, anchor (759 runs, SR 156.17): He was also the Orange Cap winner in the last edition of the Indian Premier League. However, Sudharsan doesn't even feature in India's 5-member reserve team for the Asia Cup. Abhishek Sharma - Opener, aggressive, part-time bowler (439 runs, SR 193.39): Abhishek Sharma managed to fend off competition by Yashasvi Jaiswal to seal a spot in India's 15-member Asia Cup squad. Being the No. 1 ranked T20I batter, he is a certainty in India's T20I team Shubman Gill - Opener/No. 3, consistent (650 runs, SR 156): Though his addition to India's Asia Cup squad was a surprise for some, Gill's performances in the IPL does warrant him a place in the squad, especially when coupled with the current form. Suryakumar Yadav (C) - Middle-order, captain (717 runs, SR 167.91): Arguably India's finest T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav does walk into any T20 team in the world, any given day. Shreyas Iyer - Middle-order, spin-hitter (604 runs, SR 175.07): Arguably the biggest omissions from India's Asia Cup squad, Shreyas Iyer is bound to feel heartbroken. The Punjab Kings captain was a revelation this season, helping his team qualify for the final while leading from the front. Tilak Varma - Middle-order, versatile (343 runs, SR 138.30): One of the most improved players in the team, Tilak Varma is the No. 2 ranked batter in the world at present. His adaptability to different roles in the middle-order aids his selection case. Hardik Pandya - All-rounder, finisher, pacer (224 runs, SR 163 and 14 wickets): Unarguably India's finest pace-bowling all-rounder, Hardik adds the balance to the team that no other player does. Axar Patel - Spin-bowling all-rounder (263 runs, SR 157.48, 5 wickets): Another versatile performer who can function at various positions in the middle-order, Axar is arguably India's finest spin-bowling all-rounder at present. KL Rahul (WK) - Wicketkeeper, opener/middle-order (539 runs, SR 149.72): Tough choice to pick between Rahul and Samson, but it's the Delhi Capitals lad who makes the cut. The move, however, is a little risky as he isn't as accustomed to playing in the middle-order in T20Is as he is in other formats. Jitesh Sharma (WK) - Wicketkeeper, finisher (261 runs, SR 176.35): Jitesh too beats Samson on the basis of a healthier strike-rate and ability to bat in the lower middle-order, which the team would need, based on other selections. Jasprit Bumrah - Pacer (18 wickets, economy 6.67): No justification needed, Bumrah walks into any team in the world, in any format. Prasidh Krishna - Pacer (25 wickets, Eco 8.27): A better option than Harshit Rana, based on IPL 2025 show, for the Asia Cup squad. Prasidh was also the Purple Cap winner in the T20 league this season. Arshdeep Singh - Pacer (21 wickets, SR 8.88): Second-highest wicket-taker among Indians in IPL 2025, Arshdeep Singh is a no-brainer for India for the Asia Cup in UAE. Varun Chakravarthy - Ajinkya Rahane 's captaincy.

R Ashwin Says "Sanju Samson Not Going To Play", Shubman Gill Is The Reason. Here's Why

Team India's Asia Cup 2025 squad has given former cricketers and pundits plenty to talk about. Shubman Gill 's return to the T20I set in the capacity of Suryakumar Yadav 's deputy saw some of the other players being forced out of the team. There was no place for the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer in the team. However, former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin feels Gill's return is set to see Sanju Samson being dropped to the bench too. In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin expressed sympathy with Jaiswal and Iyer after the duo found no place in India's 15-member squad. Though Ashwin admitted that team selection is a thankless job, he hopes the snubbed players were explained the reasons behind the decisions taken by the BCCI selection committee. "See, I understand that selection is a thankless job. Leaving somebody out, telling someone they are dropped, it is not an easy thing. You have to speak to the players, you have to go through the sadness. I just hope Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal were given a call, and they were told the reasons behind not being picked," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. "Genuinely, I understand Shubman Gill's selection. He is also the vice-captain. He has scored a lot of runs for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He has credentials to be picked in the T20I setup," he added. Ashwin admitted that Shubman too deserved a place in the team but the selectors 'were not fair' to Jaiswal and Iyer. "When you have Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener in the T20 World Cup 2024, to remove someone from the World Cup squad and bring in Shubman Gill. I mean, it's okay, I am happy for Shubman, but I'm very sad for both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer. It is just not fair to these two kids," said Ashwin. Agarkar also hinted that Gill is being groomed as the man to lead India in all three formats, hence his elevation as the T20I vice-captain. But, Ashwin doesn't think such a step was necessary either. "Jaiswal has also been in some fine form. Maybe they are thinking of Shubman Gill as the leader for the future. Maybe he can be the all-format captain. But it is not necessary to have the same captain in all formats," said Ashwin. Gill's promotion as Suryakumar's deputy makes him a certain pick in the Indian XI. Hence, the batter will most likely open alongside Abhishek Sharma for India, possibly forcing the management to leave Sanju Samson on the bench.

"Not The Final Squad For...": BCCI's Big Message Amid Asia Cup Squad Announcement

Test skipper Shubman Gill was on Tuesday appointed as vice-captain, with the BCCI announcing India's squad for the Asia Cup, starting September 9. Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the men's selection committee, and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav announced the squad during a press conference in Mumbai, which was delayed due to inclement weather. When the moment arrived, Agarkar ended the suspense surrounding Gill, who impressed in his debut series as Test captain against England. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah 's inclusion, while the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar and pacer Prasidh Krishna 's getting snubbed, were the other major takeaways from the day. While Agarkar insisted that they could've only picked 15 this time around, he also urged the ones who were left out not to loose hope, especially with India set to play 20 odd T20Is before next year's T20 World Cup. "Sundar is always in the scheme of things. Not the final squad for the World Cup. At the moment we have three spinners in the squad. Whenever you need four spinners, he might always come in you in the equation. At the moment we though, Rinku Singh is the spare batter that we need. Jitesh and Sanju are the wicketkeepers. We can only pick 15, had there been 16, he might have been there," Agarkar said. Agarkar added that while the core of the team will remain same, the door will remain open for others, depending on how the players perform in the remaining T20Is before the T20 World Cup "With 20 games left, you have a fair idea on who your guys are likely to be. After every World Cup, you try and plan for the next down the squad as close you get. With what 22 games you play, you have a fair idea. Injuries and form can dictate a little bit. There might be changes, there are no guarantees. But in general, because there is a World Cup around the corner, you will always know who are your best 18 or 20 guys to pick from. An I think you have got some serious options," Ajit Agarkar said on the core for the T20 World Cup.
