"Go Find Another Sucker Nation": Trump Warns BRICS Against Dollar Move
US President Donald Trump on Friday issued a warning to BRICS nations, threatening 100 per cent tariffs on their exports if they attempt to replace the US dollar as the dominant currency in international trade.
Trump has repeatedly expressed his stance against de-dollarisation, warning that BRICS countries must maintain the US dollar's role in global trade or face economic consequences.
"The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar, while we stand by and watch, is OVER," Trump wrote. "We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty US Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful US Economy. They can go find another sucker Nation. There is no chance that BRICS will replace the US Dollar in International Trade, or anywhere else, and any Country that tries should say hello to Tariffs, and goodbye to America!"
His post is nearly identical to the one he made on November 30, weeks after winning the 2024 presidential election.
The BRICS group - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa - has been discussing ways to reduce reliance on the US dollar for years. The BRICS economic collaboration has only intensified since Western sanctions were imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. In recent years, BRICS has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
While BRICS+ does not have a common currency, its members have promoted trade in their local currencies. At the 15th BRICS Summit in 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin explicitly called for de-dollarisation, stating that BRICS nations "must expand settlements in national currencies and enhance cooperation between banks."
The push gained further momentum at the June 2024 BRICS foreign ministers' meeting in Russia, where member states advocated for using local currencies in bilateral and multilateral trade.
Despite concerns over de-dollarisation, the US dollar remains the world's dominant reserve currency. A study by the Atlantic Council's GeoEconomics Center last year found that neither the euro nor BRICS+ nations had successfully reduced global reliance on the dollar.
Trump's threats come as he seeks to maintain this dominance. His use of tariffs as leverage is not new. The 78-year-old's threats against BRICS+ follow his recent push to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada, the United States' largest trading partners. Trump has argued that such tariffs are necessary to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, into the US.
During his campaign, Trump called India a "very big abuser" of trade policies and has now extended similar rhetoric towards other BRICS+ members. He has argued that by increasing tariffs on other countries, he can lower taxes for American businesses and workers, bringing factories back to the US.
This approach, however, has been met with scepticism.

HKN Energy to Develop Iraq's Hamrin Oil Field

The agreement, signed on Tuesday between North Oil Company (NOC) and the US-based company aims to increase the field's output to 60,000 barrels per day, up from the current 20,000-25,000 bpd, and to capture and utilise 45-50 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of associated gas for power generation. Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani highlighted the government's commitment to working with reputable American and Western companies to develop Iraq's oil and gas assets and enhance energy output in support of the national economy. He noted the importance of investing in associated gas to help power electricity generation stations. The agreement was signed in the presence of ministry officials, US Chargé d'Affaires Steven Fagin, and representatives from both companies. Fagin welcomed the partnership and expressed hope for more US business engagement in Iraq. North Oil Company Director General Amer Khalil said the agreement lays the foundation for a future development contract covering all wells in the field and aims to train local staff and provide gas to electricity plants. Matthew Zais, Vice President of HKN, said the company is proud to partner with the Ministry of Oil and aims to maximise the field's capacity while employing 80 percent Iraqi workers and contributing to local community development. Earlier in the day, HKN reported an explosion at its Sarsang operations in Iraqi Kurdistan. In May, HKN Energy and ONEX Group signed a binding term sheet with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to develop the Miran gas field through their new joint venture, Miran Energy. Iraq's oil exports to US will be unaffected by Trump's 30% tariff
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Ministry of Trade revealed that Iraq's oil shipments to the United States will be unaffected by President Donald Trump's recently proposed 30 percent tariff to address the trade deficit with Iraq. According to Trade Ministry spokesperson Mohammed Hanoun, oil exports are free from the new levies, which means that the majority of Iraq's exports to the United States would remain unaffected, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported. The Iraqi economy depends on oil exports for almost 90 percent of government revenue; therefore, the tariff exemption is critical to preserving economic stability. Hanoun stated that non-oil exports from Iraq to the United States are currently insignificant, with any tariff impact being indirect. The tariff waiver for oil exports provides major relief to Iraq, which depends significantly on petroleum income to pay government expenditures and essential services. Trump sent a letter last week to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani informing him that the US administration will charge Iraq a tariff of 30 percent on all Iraqi products sent to the United States. The percentage imposed by the US administration is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit disparity the United States has with Iraq, according to Trump's letter. The US president clarified that there will be no tariff if Iraq, or Iraqi companies, decided to build or manufacture products within the United States.

While reaffirming Iran's rejection of war, Mohajerani warned that the country would not yield to pressure. 'We do not seek war at all,' she said.
