A 13-year-old girl from Telangana's Ranga Reddy district was rescued from a child marriage after her school teacher alerted the authorities. The Class 8 student had reportedly been married off on May 28 to a 40-year-old man- identified as Srinivas Goud- from Kandiwada.
The incident came to light after the girl confided in her teacher, who then informed tahsildar Rajeshwar and the police, prompting immediate intervention by the police and District Child Protection Services.
'The girl lives with her mother and brother. The mother told the house owner where they lived on rent that she wanted to marry off her daughter. A mediator brought the alliance of the 40-year-old man and the 'marriage' happened in May," police said, as per NDTV.
Srinivas Goud, the girl's mother, the mediator, a priest who officiated the illegal ceremony and a woman who allegedly facilitated the arrangement have been arrested and charged under the Prevention of Child Marriage Act, the police said.
District Child Protection Officer Prawin Kumar said, 'They were cohabitating for about two months. If the girl was forced into a sexual relationship, a case under POCSO will be filed against the man, Srinivas Goud."
The girl has been shifted to a Sakhi Centre, a government-supported facility for women and children in distress, where she is receiving counselling and protection. Sexual relations with a minor are punishable under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Assam: Man sentenced to death for killing college student

Last Updated: Dhemaji, Aug 21 (PTI) A local court in Assam on Thursday sentenced a man to death for murdering a woman exactly four years ago for refusing his marriage proposal, officials said. District and Sessions Court Judge Ajay Faglu passed the sentence after the accused was convicted on Wednesday under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) — including Section 302 (punishment for murder), Section 307 (attempt to murder), and Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means). The woman, Nandita Saikia, was returning home from Moridhol College with a friend and her father on August 21, 2021 when Rintu Sarma, a fourth-grade worker in the same college, attacked all three and injured them seriously. Nandita was stabbed several times with a machete and they were admitted to a hospital here, officials said. Her injuries were grievous and she was shifted to a hospital in Dibrugarh where she died five days later. The judge, in his order, observed that in light of the principles laid down by the Supreme Court, the (district and sessions) court was of the opinion that this 'case certainly falls under the category of the rarest of rare and if life imprisonment is awarded, it would be insufficient and not meet the ends of justice". In addition to awarding the death penalty, the court also imposed multiple sentences under various charges, to run simultaneously. Under Section 307, Sharma was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000. In case he failed to pay the money, he will have to serve six more months of rigorous imprisonment. Under Section 324 IPC, the judge sentenced the convict to three years of rigorous imprisonment and Rs 5,000 fine and in default of payment of fine, he will undergo imprisonment for another three months. The court had heard and questioned 41 witnesses before pronouncing the judgment. Police had submitted a 400-page chargesheet before the court. Minor loses arm in bonded labour abuse, rights panel steps in

1 2 Jind: Following a report published in TOI on Aug 7, highlighting the harrowing case of a 15-year-old boy allegedly held as a bonded labourer and subjected to brutal abuse for two months, the Haryana Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance and issued strict directives to authorities in Jind and Nuh districts. The full commission, comprising chairperson Justice Lalit Batra and members Kuldip Jain and Deep Bhatia, expressed grave concern over the incident, describing it as a disturbing reflection of the breakdown of protective mechanisms meant to safeguard children. The commission noted that the boy endured physical harm, deprivation of food, water, and medical care, and was ultimately rescued by a compassionate teacher — an act that underscored both the child's helplessness and his extraordinary resilience. Justice Lalit Batra emphasised that the treatment meted out to the minor was a clear violation of international legal obligations, particularly Article 32 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which protects children from economic exploitation and hazardous work. The incident also prima facie violates several domestic laws, including the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, and the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The commission also observed that, if proven true, the allegations amount to a gross violation of fundamental rights under Articles 21 and 23 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantee the right to live with dignity and prohibit human trafficking and forced labour. The failure to detect and prevent such exploitation in time raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of monitoring and rescue mechanisms, especially in vulnerable migration corridors. Given the gravity of the case and the victim's vulnerable condition, the commission unanimously held that the matter requires urgent and comprehensive investigation. It called for accountability of those responsible and directed that the child be provided with appropriate medical, psychological, and rehabilitation support. Commission spokesperson Puneet Arora outlined the key directives issued by the panel, which include the identification and arrest of the accused, verification of bonded labour practices at the dairy establishment, submission of a detailed medical report of the injured child, and preparation of a rehabilitation plan. A thorough inquiry into possible violations of labour laws has also been ordered. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for Nov 4. The boy, a resident of Kishanganj district in Bihar, was reportedly lured into bonded labour under the false promise of employment. After getting separated from his companions at Bahadurgarh Railway Station, he came into contact with an unknown person who offered him work at a buffalo dairy in Jind, with a promised salary of Rs 10,000 per month. Instead, he was subjected to forced labour and physical abuse for two months. The situation worsened when he suffered a severe injury while cutting fodder, resulting in the amputation of his hand up to the elbow. The employer then abandoned him at an isolated location without assistance. Despite his injuries, the boy managed to reach Nuh, where a teacher found him, provided medical help at a local health centre, and alerted the police. He was later taken to PGIMS Rohtak, where doctors performed surgery on his injured hand. Speaking to TOI, Jind superintendent of police Kuldeep Singh confirmed that a thorough investigation is under way. Police have recorded the boy's statement during his treatment at PGIMS and shared the report with authorities in Jhajjar, Rohtak, Nuh, and the railway police. Singh added that the boy was held captive in a forest-surrounded location, and the matter is being investigated in detail.
