Zuckerberg's total pay offers to poach AI talent in 2025 was higher than box office gross of Avengers, Superman
He has not ignored startups as well, offering eye-watering pay packages for the best minds to join Meta's AI team. In fact, the total amount in pay packages that he has offered this year goes well beyond the box office collection of popular blockbusters like Avengers and Superman.
Here's a look at how much Zuckerberg offered to attract AI talent.
Zuckerberg offers billions to poach AI talent
It's not even a millions game anymore for Zuckerberg, who is currently the world's third richest man.
He reportedly offered $1 billion to poach one staffer from Mira Murati's AI startup, Thinking Machines Lab. The co-founder of the venture, Andrew Tulloch, was reportedly offered $1.5 billion to join Meta, but he refused.
Zuckerberg has also tried to get others from there with packages ranging from $200 million to $500 million over a four-year period. Notably, the billion dollar package is also a multi-year offer. However, the Meta head assured that those taking up the offers would get $50-100 million in the first year itself.
He also made offers in the ballpark of $300 million, over four years, to OpenAI talent, Wired reported.
Showing aggression, and no signs of stopping, Zuckerberg also went after a 24-year-old AI researcher, Matt Deitke. When he turned down a $125 million offer, over four years, to join Meta, Zuckerberg personally met him and sweetened the deal to $250 million.
He's also reportedly giving a $200 million multi-year package to Ruoming Pang, the former Apple AI head.
Together, Zuckerberg offered around a whopping $2.6 billion (if we take $350 mn to be the median offered to other Thinking Machines Lab staffers).
How Zuckerberg's offer compares to Hollywood hits?
Zuckerberg's offer far outdoes the performance of the best of Marvel and DC films. These mega budget projects with ensemble casts often rake in a lot of money at the box office, and 'Avengers: Endgame' or 'Superman' (2025) are no exceptions.
However, 'Avengers: Endgame' made $858.37 million in the US box office, while 'Superman' has now crossed $300 million. Even if we were to add the two, it would come to around $1.16 billion – well shy of the mark by a billion.
Notably, Zuckerberg's pay package offers have been calculated not just on the basis of salary, but equity and other components. Meta is committed to spending $72 billion on capital expenditures in 2025.

Print, digital news will vanish, only ChatGPT will remain: DNPA to HC
DNPA told the Delhi High Court that if OpenAI continues to use news content without compensation, physical and digital media may vanish, leaving only ChatGPT functioning New Delhi The Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) on Tuesday told the Delhi High Court that physical newspapers and online news portals would soon disappear and only OpenAI's chatbot ChatGPT would remain operational if large language model (LLM) makers continue to scrape and use content created by newsrooms without any revenue accruing to them. "Physical newspaper circulation has come down drastically. Physical newspapers are disappearing, digital news will disappear, and only ChatGPT will remain. It reduces my incentive to publish," Senior Advocate Rajshekhar Rao, appearing for DNPA, told Justice Amit Bansal of the Delhi High Court. The DNPA's submissions were made in the ongoing hearing of the copyright and illegal content usage case filed by Asian News International (ANI) against OpenAI. DNPA, which represents several print and digital media organisations in the country, argued that the moment ChatGPT picks up information from the public domain to train its LLM—without the consent of the news organisation—it amounts to copyright infringement. "Storage of an infringing copy itself is infringing. Even if you store it for a transient moment, you are infringing. You cannot use my copyright without my licence," Rao said. He added that even for research purposes, OpenAI must acquire a lawful copy first. "...You have to buy SCC Online to be able to crack it in the privacy of your home for research purposes," he told the court. In the last hearing, intervenors had argued that ANI and ChatGPT were each other's competitors. 'If I ask who the CM of Jammu and Kashmir is, I will get an answer from ChatGPT as well as ANI. They are direct competitors.' ANI Media has filed a case against ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, alleging that its content was illegally used to train large language models (LLMs) and other artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic get green light for civilian AI use in US; soon could power government workdesks
The US government has approved OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic as official vendors for artificial intelligence tools, making it easier for federal agencies to access and use advanced language models. This announcement comes from the General Services Administration (GSA), the government's main purchasing body. These AI tools, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude, will now be available through a central federal contracting platform called the Multiple Award Schedule (MAS). Until now, government departments had to go through lengthy negotiations to use AI technologies. With the new arrangement, those tools can be bought and deployed much more quickly because contract terms have already been set. GSA officials said the approved tools met performance and security standards, though the specific terms of the contracts have not been made public. The agency has previously used its purchasing power to get lower prices from big software firms like Adobe and Salesforce. Officials added that other AI providers may be added later. These three firms were simply further along in the process. 'We're not choosing winners or losers,' said GSA Deputy Administrator Stephen Ehikian. 'We want as many tools as possible for different use cases across government departments.' The move is expected to allow wider AI use beyond pilot programmes and national security. Agencies including the Treasury Department and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) have already shown interest. In the past, AI has been tested in areas like patent processing, fraud detection, grant reviews, and copy editing. OPM Director Scott Kupor said AI tools could be used to build chatbots for public queries or to quickly summarise thousands of public comments during policy changes, a job that usually takes weeks. But he also pointed out a challenge: 'We're probably missing people who are super familiar with modern AI tools,' he said, suggesting departments may need to hire more tech-savvy staff. 'We can't just throw things against the wall and see what sticks,' he added. This shift comes shortly after President Donald Trump signed new executive orders on AI. One of them requires that any AI tools used by federal agencies must be 'free from ideological bias'. Enforcing this rule will be handled by each agency separately, according to the GSA. 'This is a race,' said Josh Gruenbaum, who leads the GSA's Federal Acquisition Service. 'And as the president said, we're going to win it.' While the Pentagon has already awarded separate AI contracts to OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI, Tuesday's announcement focuses on AI use in civilian departments.

WhatsApp resumes testing cross-platform messaging feature
In 2022, the European Union drafted the Digital Markets Act (DMA) reform mandating big technology companies, including Meta, Google, Apple, to offer interoperability on their platforms, such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, iMessages app, Google Android Messages app, Telegram, Signal and started testing the interoperability feature in WhatsApp in 2023, but it was dropped for reasons unknown. When the DMA regulation was passed in March 2024, the company reiterated that it would bring the new feature to allow users to make calls (video/audio) and exchange messages with users on different platforms, but only by the end of Pixel 10 launch: Live stream updates and WhatsApp is once again testing a feature, reported WABetaInfo, citing the latest WhatsApp Beta for Android seen in the screen grab, WhatsApp will allow users to set up a guest account without the need for linking a mobile number.
