Call to preserve Sabah's indigenous languages

Kota Kinabalu: Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has called on the younger generation to play a proactive role in preserving and strengthening indigenous languages, particularly in Sabah where ethnic and linguistic diversity is rich. She said many young people in the state still lack fluency in their native tongues, and urged them to take up the responsibility of keeping these languages alive. 'Our main focus is to ensure the survival of various local languages in Sabah—such as Bajau, Kadazan, Dusun, Murut, Rungus, Iranun and others—by encouraging the younger generation to learn and master them,' she said. Fadhlina was speaking at the 69th Anniversary Celebration of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC),here, on Saturday. She said DBP's long-standing contribution in preserving knowledge and promoting the Malay language had reached a mature stage, and its role must now expand with stronger commitment and relevance. 'With age comes boldness—69 years is a significant milestone for DBP. The introduction of the standard framework for Bahasa Melayu reflects the government's dedication to elevate its status across all sectors, as the national language with intellectual and cultural value,' she said. Fadhlina also highlighted the role of technology in advancing language mastery and ensuring the nation is not left behind in the digital age. 'Artificial intelligence, for example, is a crucial tool in our efforts to empower language,' she said, while also expressing admiration for Sabah's many talented writers and literary figures. Quoting the Prime Minister, she said: 'The strength of a nation lies in knowledge, intellect and language—key elements in building a civilisation, embodied in the phrase 'language is the soul of a nation'. Also present at the event was the Head of State, Tun Datuk Seri Musa Aman. The ceremony also saw the launch of a biography on a notable DBP figure and the unveiling of the National Language Research Index. Incumbents to continue representing GRS in state polls: Joachim

TELUPID: Any incumbent of a State Legislative Assembly seat previously won will continue to represent GRS in the upcoming 17th State Election, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam. He said GRS remains a stabilising force in Sabah as it is a coalition of eight local parties committed to the state's development. Joachim, who is also acting Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president, said this political stability has driven economic growth since GRS came to power. He urged PBS members here to rally behind division chief and Telupid assemblyman Datuk Jonnybone Kurum to ensure the seat remains with GRS. Describing Jonnybone as a vocal and committed representative, he said his efforts in the assembly have consistently focused on the well-being of Telupid residents. MOE to take action over upside-down Jalur Gemilang at PD school
KOTA BHARU: The Ministry of Education (MOE) will take firm action once it receives the full investigation report on the incident where the Jalur Gemilang flag was flown upside down at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Chung Hua in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. Minister Fadhlina Sidek called the incident serious, stressing that all parties had been repeatedly reminded of the importance of handling the national flag correctly. 'We are awaiting the full investigation results. Once received, stern action will be taken,' she said. Fadhlina added that the MOE had consistently emphasised the sensitivity and responsibility tied to displaying the Jalur Gemilang. 'Such incidents should not have happened,' she stated during the Early Schooling Aid (BAP) presentation in Kelantan. SJKC Chung Hua issued a public apology, calling the incident an unintentional mistake by a school worker on Aug 1. The school board, Parent-Teacher Association, and administration expressed deep regret in a joint statement. Separately, Fadhlina addressed the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, assuring a thorough and transparent investigation. 'No one will be shielded. All actions will follow the investigation findings,' she said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also stressed the need for a transparent probe into Zara Qairina's death. The 13-year-old was found unconscious near her school dormitory in Papar, Sabah, on July 16 and later pronounced dead. - Bernama

Study needed before implementing early education for five-year-olds, says Fadhlina
KOTA BARU: The Education Ministry is examining the technical and operational aspects before the implementation of early childhood education starting at the age of five under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the move is important to ensure the implementation of the policy runs smoothly and meets the objective of strengthening the country's early education foundation. She said the policy is ready and is being examined by her ministry in depth to ensure the implementation will bring a positive impact. "The Education Ministry will also hold a special briefing for the media to provide a comprehensive explanation on this move," she told reporters after presenting the Early Schooling Assistance (BAP) for Form Six Students Semester 1 Year 2025 at Kelantan state level at the Education Technology Resources Sector, Pengkalan Chepa, here, on Sunday (Aug 3). Fadhlina said the study will also look into the needs of teaching resources, infrastructure and the readiness of all parties involved. Last Thursday (July 31), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in tabling the 13MP, announced that the government would make preschool education compulsory starting at the age of five to strengthen early childhood education and improve the results of the national education system. — Bernama
