Notre Dame's potential replacement options for Charles Jagusah

USA Today07-07-2025
Notre Dame announced that offensive lineman Charles Jagusah was injured in an ATV accident in Wyoming this past weekend. He underwent surgery to repair a fractured left humerus, which wasn't the best news.
The team said Jagusah is scheduled to return to campus early this week for further evaluation and that his prognosis from the surgery is "favorable."
While there is no timetable for Jagusah's recovery, it is possible that he could be sidelined between three and six months.
Jagusah was projected to start at left tackle for Notre Dame entering the 2024 season but tore a pectoral muscle early in training camp. After missing the entire regular season, he returned for the Fighting Irish during their College Football Playoff run. He filled in for Rocco Spindler at right guard and then started the national title game against Ohio State at left tackle.
Even if his recovery goes well, Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish need to look at other options at that starting RG spot. Here are some possibilities the coaching staff could consider.
Redshirt sophomore Sullivan Absher
Absher makes the most sense to step in for Jagusah. The 6-foot-8, 328-pounder has played both offensive tackle and guard for the Fighting Irish. His pass protection hasn't been excellent, which pushed him inside. But his run blocking is solid, making him a sound option to fill in for Jagusah.
Redshirt freshman Guerby Lambert
Lambert has been dealing with an offseason injury but is expected back for fall camp. We just don't know how available he will be when the Fighting Irish open at Miami on August 31. The 6-foot-7, 341-pounder is a natural offensive tackle, but it would be interesting to see him get reps at guard in camp. ND could also move Anthonie Knapp inside and let Lambert flourish at tackle.
Redshirt sophomore Joe Otting
Would the Irish move Otting over from center? Starting center Ashton Craig is also coming back from injury, so his health will have to be monitored. But the 6-foot-4, 312-pounder is big enough to play guard, and he's quick on his feet. Certainly he is an intriguing option.
Sophomore Anthonie Knapp
Jagusah took snaps almost exclusively at right guard in the spring, so Knapp is most likely slated to be the starting left tackle once again for the Irish. But the 6-foot-4, 294-pounder could slide inside. He had an up and down season in 2024 but improved as the year went on and seemingly has a bright future at tackle. He could be a quick fix inside, though. Knapp was one of the team's most dominant run blockers last fall. If Will Black can play right away as a true freshman, Knapp could shift inside.
My choice?
Absher. He has experience at the position and his run blocking is solid. And no other pieces along the unit would need to be moved.
Jagusah may still be able to see the field in 2025, but the Irish need to explore other options. Thankfully there are plenty of them on coach Joe Rudolph's unit.

New York Giants double-down on former Notre Dame WR chances to earn a role with the team

When we last checked in on former Notre Dame and current New York Giants wide receivers Beaux Collins, the reports pointed out that he could start if Malik Nabers wasn't healthy enough to go. Well, a lot has changed since then, after the Clemson transfer had an 80-yard reception in Saturday's preseason victory against the New York Jets. While Nabers did return to the practice field on Tuesday, but it's unsure if he's going to be ready for the season opener. Following practice, Giants wide receivers coach Mike Groh was asked about Collins, and he was very complimentary of their undrafted free agent signing. 'I think Beaux's done a good job. He's done a good job since he's got in here. He's very bright, and he's got a skill set good length, height, good speed, ball skills,' said his coach. It's looking more and more like Collins is going to make the team, and not only that, have a role within the offense. It's great to see the former Notre Dame receiver overcoming not getting drafted and having success in the NFL. Notre Dame social media reacts to CJ Carr being named the starting quarterback

On Tuesday, Notre Dame football announced who will start the season opening game against Miami, redshirt-freshman CJ Carr. The Michigan native beat out Kenny Minchey for the role, as the two battle through the spring until head coach Marcus Freeman had made a decision. He did say on Sunday that he would take into consideration who offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and quarterback coach Gino Guidugli thought best fit the offense. At the end of the day Carr was the choice, and while many didn't see it coming due to reports that Minchey looked better during camp, the Irish went with the younger option. There was no doubt that social media was going to react to the news, and here are some of the best comments shared by insiders and fans. A bit surprising The competition was fierce, and while it didn't seem like Carr would be the choice at times, he eventually was. It's a bit premature to suggest that Minchey would leave, especially since anything could happen during the season. Talia Baia has been all over training camp, so she would know it was a bit surprising. JaDon Blair's father gives Minchey helpful advice It's a family in South Bend, and that extends to the players families as well. Blair surely knows Minchey put his all into trying to win the starting job, and the elder Blair gives him some great advice. There's no need to get down on yourself, just get ready for the next opportunity. Not a Michigan man As The Athletic's Vannini points out, Carr is a Michigan legacy who didn't follow his grandfather to Ann Arbor. He would have had a shot to start there was well, since it looks like they'll be turning the offense to a true freshman. The Wolverines loss was clearly Notre Dame's gain, which stokes the rivalry fire a bit more. Is this the appropriate meme? I'm a big fan of Pickell, but I'm not sure this is such a crazy decision. Both quarterback had pro's and con's, but going with Carr's immense upside makes plenty of sense. There's schedule is manageable, and there's plenty of time for him to get acclimated to this level. However, if Pickell is saying this could be fun, then let's go. Great work on the graphic The graphic of the day, besides the actually announcement of course. The little details are fantastic, from the 'Freeman Film' to the 'manufacturers of Joe Montana and Brady Quinn'. You win the day Rational ND Fan. Upside in Carr It very much seemed like Freeman didn't want to play it safe, and went with upside in Carr. While Minchey still has all the traits you are looking for in a quarterback, in my eyes, the new starter has a certain flare about his game that elevates the players around him. That's something you just can't teach. And throws like that. Minchey had a legit shot While many thought that it was Carr's job to lose, Minchey sure didn't let that get in his way of impressive many people during the competition. I also believe that the coaching staff gave him a legit chance at winning the job, and he almost did it. Thank you coach Freeman Finishing with this great post, The 4 Horsemen Podcast shared a great post on the quarterback outlook. There was only going to be one starter, the other disappointed, who needs to continue to stay ready. The fact that Notre Dame was in this situation is a far cry from the Brian Kelly era, and Freeman deserves a ton of credit for reshaping the Irish roster. Wisconsin football transfer edge named to Comeback Player of the Year watch list

Wisconsin football transfer edge rusher Mason Reiger was named to the Comeback Player of the Year watch list on Tuesday. Reiger, who missed the entire 2024 slate with a knee injury, was one of 75 players across 51 programs to earn a spot on the preseason list. Including Reiger, a total of 13 players from the Big Ten appeared on the lengthy list. The 6-foot-5 outside linebacker joined Luke Fickell's program in December following four seasons with the Louisville Cardinals. In 32 total games from 2021-23, the Illinois native logged 49 total tackles (32 solo), 17 for loss, 8.0 sacks, four forced fumbles and three pass deflections. As a redshirt junior in 2023, Reiger tallied a career-best 22 tackles and 5.0 sacks. In a top-10 win over Notre Dame, he showed out with a season-high four tackles, two sacks for 12 yards and one forced fumble. As a transfer this winter, Reiger was considered 247Sports' No. 18 overall edge and a four-star prospect. His addition to the Badgers' defense, which accounted for 17 total sacks and 42 tackles for loss in 2024, will provide a much-needed boost in scenarios where Mike Tressel elects to hunt the opposing quarterback. Reiger projects to line up at right outside linebacker ahead of veteran Aaron Witt. Darryl Peterson, Tackett Curtis and Christian Alliegro are slated to accompany the first-year Badger as starters in the linebacker room -- a group that has traditionally performed at a high level at the center of the Wisconsin defense.
