37-year-old arrested for stealing Rs 40 lakh from bank employee in Kozhikode
Kozhikode: A 37-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a bag containing Rs 40 lakh from a bank employee at Pantheerankavu in Kozhikode.
Police arrested M Shibin Lal, a resident of Kaipalam, from Palakkad on Friday.
The incident occurred last Wednesday outside Akshaya Financiers, a private financial firm, in Pantheerankavu, where Shibin snatched a bag containing the money from a staff member of ESAF Small Finance Bank and fled on a scooter.
Shibin had approached the ESAF bank branch seeking money to reclaim gold pledged at another financial institution. After opening an account at the bank, the employee came to Pantheerankavu with the requested cash.
As soon the bank employee stepped out of the car, the accused snatched the cash from them and fled on a scooter parked nearby at 1.30pm.
Police had found that the accused had fabricated the story of him having pledged gold and had misled the bank employee using forged documents. According to police sources, efforts were on to recover the stolen money.
Based on CCTV footage and mobile tower locations, police found that he had travelled from Thrissur to Palakkad. He was nabbed by a team led by Pantheerankavu SHO K Shaju and SI R Prashanth.
During interrogation, the accused claimed that the bag contained only Rs 1 lakh. Police recovered Rs 55,000 and three mobile phones from him at the time of arrest. Police suspect he may have handed over the remaining money to someone else.

On ED's plea, Bombay High Court sets aside magistrate's order accepting EOW's closure report in Topsgrup case
The Bombay High Court on Wednesday set aside a magistrate court's September 2022 decision of accepting a closure report filed by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in a case against Topsgrup Services and Solution Limited. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had relied on the EOW's case to register a money laundering case against Amit Chandole, a close aide of Shiv Sena minister Pratap Sarnaik, and had subsequently probed the leader. Ramesh Iyer, a former employee of Topsgrup and the original complainant, had informed the magistrate that he had no objection to the closure report, claiming that his complaint was filed 'due to a misunderstanding.' The court had then accepted the report, prompting the ED to challenge the decision before the high court. The ED's case was based on an FIR registered on October 28, 2020, based on Iyer's complaint. He had alleged that Topsgrup defrauded the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) of Rs 175 crore. As per the ED, the MMRDA contract awarded to Topsgrup was facilitated by Sarnaik, who allegedly received kickbacks of at least Rs 7 crore. On Wednesday, a single-judge bench of Justice Madhav Jamdar – while allowing the ED's plea – noted that the magistrate 'didn't apply mind' to the 'C' summary report (closure report) and it was accepted solely on the ground that the complainant had given no objection. The EOW had filed the C-summary report in January 2022. The order of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court, dated September 14, 2022, noted the EOW's submission that after reviewing witness statements and relevant documents, it concluded that no cognizable offence could be made out. The high court bench has now sent the matter back to the magistrate court, directing it to reconsider the C-summary report filed by the EOW expeditiously. The high court clarified that it had not examined the merits of the closure report and that all contentions of the parties remained 'expressly kept open.' Justice Jamdar noted that the magistrate was duty bound to apply his/her mind to the facts of the case, the closure report and accompanying material before passing an order, either accepting the report, rejecting it and taking cognisance of the offence and initiating proceedings, or ordering further investigation. 'A bare perusal of said Order dated September 14, 2022 shows that the 'C' Summary Report is accepted without application of mind and only on the ground that the First Informant has given no objection,' the high observed. The bench further noted that the question of whether the case needs to be committed to the special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) would arise only if the magistrate rejects the closure report and initiates proceedings. Accordingly, the high court sent the case back to the magistrate for reconsideration and disposed of the ED's plea.

Jharkhand: Drugs worth Rs 1.5 crore, Rs 44.57 lakh in cash seized, two held
Last Updated: Chatra, Jun 14 (PTI) Two persons including a woman were arrested after brown sugar and opium worth around Rs 1.5 crore were seized from their possession in Jharkhand's Chatra district, police said on Saturday. Both the accused were arrested from different locations during a raid under Patthalgadda and Rajpur police station areas, they said. Chatra Superintendent of Police (SP) Sumit Kumar Agarwal said that Roshan Dangi, one of the masterminds of drug trafficking, was arrested during the raid in the Patthalgadda police station limits on Friday. 'On his identification, police raided the house of one Rubi Devi, a relative of Dangi, at Budhigara village in Rajpur police station limits and recovered 287 grams of brown sugar and 11.17 kg of opium, worth around Rs 1.5 crore," Agarwal said. He said that Rs 44,57,350 in cash was also recovered from a sack in the house of Devi. Agarwal said Dangi had earlier escaped during the raids conducted on June 11, during which a woman drug trafficker was arrested and 3.82 kg of brown sugar and 2.78 kg of opium, worth a total of Rs 10 crore, were seized from her possession. 'Thought it was an earthquake': Eyewitnesses recount horrific Ahmedabad plane crash; say sky was filled with black smoke
NEW DELHI: Mohan Bahadur Kshatriya, an eyewitness to the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, recounted scenes of devastation and chaos on Saturday as he joined rescue efforts just minutes after the aircraft went down on Thursday. Living just 500 meters from the crash site, Kshatriya said he initially mistook the deafening explosion for an earthquake. 'I heard a loud bang and thought it was a storm or an earthquake,' he said. 'When I stepped out, there was smoke and fire everywhere. People were shouting that a plane had crashed. We ran toward the mess where students were screaming for help.' He worked alongside Army personnel to rescue five severely injured students from the wreckage. He added, 'They were in extremely serious condition. Then we searched further and found a body in terrible shape, trapped under the debris,' he added. Another eyewitness, Rekha Kshatriya, described the moment the aircraft hit as unlike anything they had ever experienced before, even in a neighborhood accustomed to loud noise. The Committee will examine the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines issued to prevent and handle such occurrences and suggest comprehensive guidelines for dealing with such instances in the future," the ministry said in an official statement. It clarified that the new panel will not replace other formal inquiries but will focus on formulating improved protocols to prevent similar disasters in the future.
