Yankees' Max Fried takes aim at Rangers for first time in career
Fried (12-4, 2.62 ERA) will be countered in the opener of a three-game series by left-handed workhorse Patrick Corbin (6-7, 3.78) of the Rangers.
The new-look Yankees will continue a road trip that started with a trio of losses in Miami, including 7-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Rangers will return home after losing three of four games to Seattle, including a 5-4 defeat on Sunday that dropped the team to 2-5 on its seven-game road trip.
Fried was 2-2 with a 5.54 ERA in five starts in July. He heads to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex off his best start since July 6. In that one, on Tuesday, Fried surrendered four runs (two earned) on four hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out nine in a 7-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
"I've not had the best results in the last however many starts," Fried said after Tuesday's performance. "It was just important for me to go out there and make sure we put us in a really good chance to win. Just wanted to bear down, hold us there to be able to help the offense do what they do."
Fried threw a career-high 111 pitches in the appearance against Tampa Bay. He gave up two unearned runs and then a home run in the first inning but retired 14 straight batters later in the game.
"Just kind of a stud, grind-it (out) effort by Max," New York manager Aaron Boone said.
Fried has yet to face the Rangers in his 190-game MLB career.
Corbin will take the ball for Texas on Monday and will make his 21st start of the season -- which is second on the team to ace Jacob deGrom (22). Corbin, who has three straight no-decisions, has allowed a combined four runs (three earned) over 16 1/3 innings.
Corbin's most recent appearance was a five-inning stint against the Los Angeles Angels in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks in a clash the Rangers lost 8-5 on Tuesday. It was the 16th straight start in which he's pitched at least five innings and the fifth game in a row he's surrendered two earned runs or fewer.
"I love the competition part of it," said Corbin, who signed with Texas as a free agent in March. "The reason why I wanted to come here is to be in games that matter and to be on a good team. It's been fun so far, and we have a long way to go."
In six lifetime appearances against the Yankees (all of them starts), Corbin has a 2-1 record and a 2.72 ERA over 36 1/3 innings. The loss came on May 20, when he allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over five innings in a 5-2 setback in New York.

August 4 - After salvaging the final two series of a nine-game road trip, the Los Angeles Dodgers will return home Monday night to face the St. Louis Cardinals, bringing their modest haul from last week's trade deadline with them. The Dodgers added right-handers Brock Stewart and Paul Gervase, as well as outfielder Alex Call, while awaiting roster mainstays to return from injuries for the stretch drive. Roberts will send Tyler Glasnow (1-1, 3.38 ERA) to the mound Monday for the right-hander's fourth start since he returned from more than two months away with shoulder inflammation. Glasnow, who was roughed up for four runs with five walks in four innings Tuesday in his team's 5-4 win at Cincinnati, is 1-2 with a 2.22 ERA in seven career appearances (three starts) against St. Louis. The Cardinals are set to send right-hander Sonny Gray (10-5, 4.38) to the mound in the opener of the three-game series. Gray has given up a combined 17 earned runs, and 19 total runs, over his last three starts. Gray's recent struggles included 30 hits allowed over his last 13 1/3 innings, although he gave up just three runs in a 5-0 home loss to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. "Overall, when you look at his career -- especially the last few years -- July hasn't treated him well, but he bounces back and does a really nice job," Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol told reporters. "So we're looking forward to that next (start)." Gray is 2-4 lifetime against the Dodgers with a 2.89 ERA in eight starts and is 1-2 with a 3.07 ERA in five starts at Dodger Stadium. Like the Dodgers were on Sunday, the Cardinals will be searching for some offense after they were held scoreless through eighth innings on one hit at San Diego before falling 7-3 to the Padres. The Cardinals at least carried a little momentum on their bus ride up the California coast with three runs on five hits and a walk in the ninth inning of their loss. But this good luck and health has not eased any worries for his mother watching him on in the stands. Even then, an MRI didn't show any major damage and Mahomes was back playing within two weeks. He has sustained injuries in the playoffs - notably a concussion and a turf toe injury in the 2020 season that required no missed time (Mahomes did get surgery to fix his turf toe problem after losing Super Bowl LV). Then, in 2022, Mahomes suffered an ankle sprain in the AFC Divisional Round matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars which required him to miss most of the first half. Backup quarterback Chad Henne managed to keep the Chiefs in the game and Mahomes eventually returned - tossing a game-winning touchdown pass. Prior to his pro days, Mahomes fractured a bone in the wrist of his non-throwing hand while playing quarterback at Texas Tech. Despite the injury, he continued playing the final five games of the season.

Angry Dallas Cowboys fans heckled Jerry Jones over the weekend as they responded to the owner's standoff with Micah Parsons. The pass rusher, 26, has been seeking a contract extension to improve on the terms of his current deal - but publicly requested a trade on Friday as the situation boiled over. And fans at the team's training camp the following day voiced their displeasure with that latest development as they chanted Parsons' name. Attendees at the practice in Oxnard, California - which Jones was present at - could at one point could be heard loudly chanting 'We want Micah!' Other fans brought signs to camp urging Jones to pay the four-time Pro Bowler, with one supporter even bringing a sign which read 'sell the team!' Parsons was present at the practice and took part in the beginning part of workouts, ESPN reported, but was not wearing his No. 11 jersey and was absent from the defense during certain drills. Parsons, for his part, said that prior conversation began with the pair talking about 'leadership' before contract talks were brought up, and that he did not walk away from the conversation believing an official agreement had been struck. 'Yes, I engaged in a back and forth in regards to what I wanted from my contract, but at no point did I believe this was supposed to be a formal negotiation and I informed Mr. Jones afterward my agent would reach out thinking this would get things done,' he wrote in a statement shared on X. Parsons, who spark to Jones during the winter without his agent, David Mulugheta, says the team has not called his representation once about a deal. 'I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present,' he wrote. 'I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me.' Jones admitted he has not involved Mulugheta in the talks and explained why. 'My experience has been the agent is not the one that solves the problems you have when you're executing what you said you would do in the contract,' Jones said. 'So I like to deal directly with the player when it's of this nature.' Parsons, who is fifth in the NFL in sacks since debut year in 2021, will make $24million this season after the fifth-year option on his rookie contract got picked up. However, he's seeking a raise for his next deal after several fellow top rushers were paid handsomely this offseason. T.J. Watt's new three-year, $123million extension will see him paid an average of $41million per season in Pittsburgh, while Myles Garrett is not far behind after signing a four-year, $160million deal with Cleveland. Maxx Crosby's fresh three-year, $106.5million extension will also pay him an average of $35.5million per season. It's not exactly clear what Jones offered Parsons, but he spoke about 'guaranteeing somebody almost $200million' over the weekend. 'What y'all don't know is what I offered him, and it's a helluva lot more than you think I did,' he said.
