FII turn net sellers of Indian equities in the first week of July: Is a market correction coming?

Hans India07-07-2025
After three months of consistent buying, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have turned cautious, becoming net sellers in the first week of July. Data from NSDL shows FIIs sold Indian equities worth ₹1,421 crore across four consecutive sessions, marking a clear pause in the buying momentum seen since April.
The sell-off comes at a time when investors are bracing for key market-moving events — notably the July 9 US-India reciprocal tariff deadline and the upcoming Q1 earnings season. Analysts believe these twin triggers will shape the future course of FII activity.
VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, explained, 'Two factors could revive FII interest: a positive outcome on the trade deal front and robust corporate earnings. However, any disappointment on either front may further dampen sentiment.'
Despite the recent outflows, the April–June quarter saw FIIs invest ₹38,673 crore in Indian equities, indicating strong prior conviction. Yet the recent market highs — Nifty hitting an eight-month peak on June 30 and Bank Nifty clocking a record on July 2 — have led to profit booking, particularly in sectors like capital goods and power.
FIIs have been rotating their portfolios, exiting IT and autos while increasing exposure to financials, telecom, and oil & gas, Vijayakumar noted.
Echoing the view, Trivesh D, COO at Tradejini, said, 'The profit booking seen after the rally was expected. But the intensity of daily selling is gradually reducing, hinting that selling pressure might be easing.'
So far in July, the Nifty 50 has moved just 0.2%, reflecting a consolidation phase as traders await fresh triggers. With geopolitical uncertainty and global macro pressures also in play, the market's direction this week hinges on a few key developments.
'This week is crucial,' added Trivesh. 'T for Trade Deal, T for TCS earnings, and T for Thursday — July 9 — could collectively dictate whether FIIs return or stay on the sidelines.'
Markets now await clarity — either a resolution on tariffs or a stellar Q1 report card — to drive the next move. Until then, expect caution and range-bound action.

Naidu releases report of Task Force on Economic Development for Swarna Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday unveiled the report of the Task Force on Economic Development for Swarna Andhra Pradesh @ 2047 as its Chairman in a programme jointly organised by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi. Co-chaired by TATA Sons Executive Chairman N. Chandrasekharan, the expert panel made a host of recommendations to the government on diverse sectors that had the potential to catapult it to the league of progressive States. The task force stated in its report that India emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the world and was expected to be a developed economy by 2047, but its journey towards a 'Viksit Bharat' by the 100th year of Independence hinged significantly on how the States perform individually and drive the economic growth agenda. In this context, it had been noted that with the third longest coastline in the country and one of the largest land banks, Andhra Pradesh was at a comparative advantage to become one of the champions of the country's overall goal of achieving around US$ 35 trillion target over the next two decades. A.P.'s economy had more than doubled to US$ 174 billion in 2023-24 from US$ 86 billion (at current prices) in 2014-15 in spite of the challenges posed by the bifurcation in 2014. The task force felt that though there were some gaps to be filled, A.P. was well poised to take the leap in its developmental journey towards a Swarna Andhra Pradesh by 2047. It was pointed out that the top 15 districts — Visakhapatnam, NTR, Tirupati, Krishna, Eluru, Nellore, Guntur, Anantapur, Kakinada, West Godavari, East Godavari, YSR, Sri Sathya Sai, Anakapalli and Prakasam — contributed as much as 72% to the State's economy. They were expected to contribute nearly US$1.70 trillion to the State's overall target of US$2.40 trillion in 2047. The task force laid down industries such as food processing, marine and aquaculture, electronics, automotive, and life sciences sectors as the potential growth drivers, while noting that emerging opportunities, which included the blue economy, would give a fillip to the growth prospects. In terms of enablers, it was recommended that the State needed renewed focus on quality education and skills development. Towards restoring industry confidence, the task force suggested introduction of a legislative mechanism to protect already announced incentives and concessions, regardless of a change in political dispensation, prioritising the clearance of all overdue incentive pay outs to help restore industry's faith in the system. Expressing concern that the State's current fiscal scenario was a cause for concern, , the task force recommended to the government to set up an independent agency to monitor the compliance of fiscal responsibility legislation provisions, and a State Institutions of Transformation in collaboration with the NITI Aayog, to establish an independent public debt management cell in line with the recommendation of the Fifteenth Finance Commission, and to strengthen the State Finance Commission. The experts said the government should leverage the Central government's initiatives such as the Aspirational Districts Programme to facilitate healthy competition among districts, have a graded incentive structure for specific regions and a dedicated policy for accelerated creation of growth centres in the different regions, and reap the benefits of One District-One Product programme for promoting exports.

India-US Trade Deal: Aug 1 Deadline Nears... Will The Deal Be Sealed In Time? Piyush Goyal Shares Major Update

New Delhi: A small group of Indian trade negotiators has landed in Washington this week. Their task is urgent. They must try, once again, to untangle the long-pending India-U.S. trade deal that has seen too many rounds, too many delays and now stares down a hard deadline, August 1. The clock is ticking. U.S. President Donald Trump, now in his second term at the White House, has already fired off tariff letters to a long list of countries. Japan, Brazil, South Korea, Thailand and Cambodia, each has received a note – explaining in clear terms why new tariffs are coming. India has not received one. That is only because New Delhi and Washington are still talking. But if there is no deal before the deadline, the letter could arrive. Where Are The Talks Stuck? Washington wants India to lower its tariffs on American agricultural and dairy goods. Milk, wheat, poultry and genetically modified soy, all are on the table. New Delhi, however, is not moving. India's position has been clear. Its farm sector, dairy cooperatives, food security architecture, they cannot take a hit. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has said any agreement must benefit both sides. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has echoed that line. No pressure. No compromise on farmers. No backdoor trade-offs. So far, India has kept these sectors out of most trade deals, including with the United Kingdom and Australia. The same applies here. Indian Team Lands in Washington Led by Special Secretary Rajesh Agarwal, the Indian delegation is back in the U.S. capital, hoping to break the deadlock. The goal is to find a formula, something that can be signed off before Trump's August 1 deadline kicks in and the United States begins slapping tariffs across the board. Goyal says talks are moving 'at speed'. Speaking to reporters, he confirmed that the Indian side is focused on crafting an agreement that works for both countries. There is still time. Barely two weeks. But the message is that the window will not stay open for long. Trump's Tariff Playbook Trump is playing hardball again. Twenty-five countries have already been hit with his new tariff regime. Canada was slapped with 35 percent. Others have seen higher. But in India's case, the U.S. president has dropped a telling hint. While speaking about his global tariff strategy, he said that 'key trading partners' may see lower tariffs, around 15 to 20 percent. And not every country will get a formal letter. It is a signal that if India clinches the deal, it may escape the harshest penalties. Why India Won't Budge On Dairy & Agriculture Behind India's tough stance lies a deeper concern. According to a recent report from the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), any wide-scale entry of subsidised U.S. dairy or poultry goods could damage India's rural economy. Not only small farmers but food security itself could be hit. The report warns against opening the gates to American grain or genetically modified soybeans. Once these products enter Indian markets, they could displace local produce and crush pricing structures. This is not only about trade margins, this is about the long-term sustainability of Indian agriculture. Can A Deal Still Happen? If all goes well in Washington, negotiators may stitch together a limited package. It will not be a full-blown foreign trade agreement (FTA). But it could be enough to avoid Trump's tariff stick. Enough to show progress. Enough to keep the trade lanes open. A senior official said that a breakthrough is still possible before August 1. But it depends on what each side is willing to give, and what each insists on keeping off the table. Until then, all eyes remain on the U.S. capital.
