‘Is it so difficult to be patriotic?' Khurshid after remarks backing end of Article 370
Congress leader and former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Monday said it was 'distressing' that while he is abroad on a 'mission against terrorism', people 'at home' are 'calculating political allegiances'.
The Congress leader's comments come days after he backed the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to J&K, prompting the BJP to target his party that holds a nuanced position on the issue.
When on mission against terrorism, to carry India's message to the world, it's distressing that people at home are calculating political allegiances. Is it so difficult to be patriotic?' Khurshid said in a post on X during a visit to Kuala Lumpur as part of an all-party delegation to rally support for India's war against terror emanating from Pakistan.
He later told news agency ANI: 'People keep saying, 'what are you doing in a delegation where there are people from BJP. What are you doing there?' What are we doing here? We are doing here is, what is needed for the country. No matter which party you are from, today what is needed is a single voice to speak in favour of the nation and that is what we are doing here.'
I think when I say, is it so difficult to be patriot? — that is the question that has to be asked of those who are putting out tweets and saying things that I think I believe are not very encouraging when you want to do something for the nation,' he said.
The delegation of which Khurshid is a member is led by JD(U)'s Sanjay Kumar Jha and includes BJP MPs Aparajita Sarangi, Brij Lal, Pradan Baruah and Hemang Joshi; TMC's Abhishek Banerjee and CPI (M)'s John Brittas. It has been tasked with visiting Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Japan and Singapore.
In Jakarta Friday, Khurshid told think tanks and academia: 'Kashmir had a major, major problem for a long time. Much of that was reflected in the thinking of the government in an Article called 370 of the Constitution, which somehow gave the impression that it (Kashmir) was separate from the rest of the country. Article 370 was abrogated, finally put to an end, because so much time had passed. Subsequently, there was an election and 65% participation. There is an elected government in Kashmir today, and therefore, for people to want to undo everything that has happened, the prosperity that has come to Kashmir, it is very unfortunate. It will give a setback to anybody.'
Following Khurshid's remarks, while the Congress refused to comment, BJP leaders targeted the party, with Puri MP Sambit Patra saying somebody should relay the comments to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala said he 'hopes the Congress does not designate Salman Khurshid as 'super pravakta (super spokesperson)' after he has busted their narrative on 370'. It was a dig at Congress spokesperson Udit Raj who recently said party MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading one of the delegations, should be designated by the BJP as a 'super spokesperson'.
'Will Rahul Gandhi admit Article 370 was his family blunder? Even Salman Khurshid has now lauded its removal,' said Poonawala.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurates Ayushman Arogya Mandirs
After the BJP came to power in Delhi, its government signed an MoU with the Centre earlier this month to as she inaugurated an Ayushman Arogya Mandir here to deliver comprehensive primary health care Press Trust of India New Delhi Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday asserted that her government wants to make the national capital best in terms of health infrastructure as she inaugurated an Ayushman Arogya Mandir here to deliver comprehensive primary health care. At the inauguration event at Tis Hazari, Gupta also hit out at the previous AAP dispensation and alleged that mohalla clinics run by them were "corruption hubs". "Corruption was committed in the name of outsourcing of tests. There was corruption in taking space for the clinics on rent," she charged. Gupta said the Centre had allocated Rs 2,400 crore to the previous government for opening of over 1,100 Ayushman Mandirs but those funds were not utilised. "Those funds will lapse by March. The previous government did not use the funds. We have to build these Ayushman Mandirs by March next year so that the funds do not get lapsed. The work that should have been done in five years, we will have to do it in much less time," she added. The chief minister said the government is working towards making Delhi the best in terms of health infrastructure. "We want to ensure that no one should lose their life because of lack of proper treatment," she added. According the the standards set by the World Health Organisation, there should be two beds per 1,000 people. "There are 0.42 beds in Delhi for 1,000 people. It means that there is not even one bed available for 1,000 people. We are working on a target of having three beds for 1,000 people," she added. Thirty-three Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and 17 Jan Aushadhi Kendras were inaugurated across the national capital by ministers here. Ayushman Arogya Mandirs is a component of the Union government's Ayushman Bharat initiative. After the BJP came to power in Delhi, its government signed an MoU with the Centre earlier this month to implement the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in the city, fulfilling a major poll promise of the party. At the event, the chief minister also urged lawyers not to deface walls with posters. "Posters are seen pasted around courts. I request you to not deface the walls. Please remove these posters," she said. Cong accuses Modi Govt of delaying caste census, calls it political diversion
New Delhi, June 17 (UNI) The Congress on Tuesday slammed the Modi government for what it called a deliberate 'delay in conducting a caste census', accusing it of politicising the issue to divert public attention — much like the women's reservation bill. Congress general secretary Sachin Pilot, while addressing a press conference here, said that the demand for a caste census, led prominently by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, has long been a priority for the Congress, and the government has only "yielded to this pressure in principle, not in action". "The Modi government is simply managing headlines, not genuinely addressing the issue," Pilot said, adding that the formal notification lacks any mention of a 'caste-based enumeration'. 'The government has claimed that the caste census will begin in 2027, but concerns are growing due to the glaring budgetary shortfall. Only Rs 574 crore has been allocated, whereas such a massive exercise requires at least Rs 8,000 to 10,000 crore,' Pilot alleged. Accusing the central government of lacking both intent and commitment, Pilot said, "The objective is not just to collect data on an individual's caste but to understand the living conditions of these families and create policies to substantially improve their livelihoods." Without tangible data, no state or central government can implement targeted interventions, which is what we aimed to achieve." 'Initially, they labelled us "Urban Naxals" and refused to accept these demands. Now, sensing the country's mood, they have accepted the proposal in principle. However, there seems to be considerable confusion and dissatisfaction regarding it,' Pilot said. He again urged the Centre to emulate the 'Telangana model' at the national level, claiming that the state had successfully conducted a comprehensive caste survey using NGOs and technical experts instead of overburdened government staff. Pilot also demanded a clear roadmap, sufficient funding, and transparency in the execution of the census. UNI RBE ARN

Congress doing vote bank politics over caste census: BJP
New Delhi, June 17 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi on Tuesday criticised the Congress party, asserting that it has been engaging in vote bank politics under the guise of reservation policies. At the same time, he emphasised that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is committed to ensuring dignity and upliftment for all castes through the conduct of a comprehensive caste census. 'Under the leadership of PM Modi, the cabinet has decided to conduct the census. In the press release, it was clearly stated that, for the first time in the history of independent India, a social, economic survey, and caste census will be carried out along with the national census,' Trivedi stated during a press conference here. He further highlighted that the NDA government stands for 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas' (inclusive development), contrasting it with the Congress party's approach. The BJP spokesperson accused the Congress of neglecting important issues such as Operation Sadbhav and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and criticised their opposition to the caste census. 'The Congress party has a habit of overlooking crucial matters. They are spreading false claims about the caste census and attempting to divert attention from the genuine goal of ensuring social justice,' he added. Trivedi raised concerns over Congress' alleged efforts to manipulate reservation policies, citing examples from Karnataka, Telangana, and West Bengal. "I want to ask the Congress party what they have to say about the people of the minority community, the castes, that they have tried to include in such a large number in Karnataka and Telangana, about which the court has also commented? After all, whose part do you want to take? 'The West Bengal government has included a large number of Muslim community members in OBC lists, with reports indicating that 73 out of 91 castes are from the Muslim community. Such practices reflect vote bank politics aimed at undermining the share of backward classes,' he stated. He further sought to clarify that the ongoing survey in Telangana is not a full caste census but merely a social and economic survey. 'The notification of the caste census is issued by the central government. States can only conduct surveys, not full censuses,' Trivedi explained. He alleged that Congress kept power within one family and failed to support real economic development even though it ruled India for decades. 'The Congress is busy in destructive policy. Wherever the Congress came in power, the fiscal position of that state has deteriorated because of their 'khata khat' model of engaging in expenditure spree;' Trivedi said referring to Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's acknowledgment of the state's precarious fiscal position. Addressing the upcoming population census scheduled to begin in March 2027, he said it will be a comprehensive drive to be conducted in two phases, gathering demographic, socio-economic, and cultural details of every individual besides collecting data on housing conditions, assets, and amenities.
