Hassan, US delegation discuss cooperation, regional developments
AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan met on Tuesday with a delegation of US Congressional aides to discuss Jordan-US strategic ties and cooperation.
Hassan reflected on his recent, "constructive" visit to the US, where both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties and broadening economic cooperation and investment opportunities, according to a Prime Ministry statement.
The discussion covered the current regional situation, emphasising the importance of supporting efforts to ensure security and stability.
The prime minister outlined the Kingdom's future plans as part of a comprehensive modernisation agenda targeting the political, economic and administrative sectors.
The plans prioritise investments in key strategic projects, particularly in water, rail, transport and infrastructure, aiming to boost economic growth and create job opportunities for Jordanians.
The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Economic Affairs Muhannad Shehadeh.
Also on Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi held separate meetings with the US Congress delegations a French Senate delegation to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional developments, particularly the escalating crisis in Gaza.
In his meeting with a delegation of US congressional aides, Safadi reiterated the strategic partnership between Jordan and the United States, emphasising the importance of continued coordination in addressing regional challenges, the Jordan News Agency, Petra reported.
Discussions focused on the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, now under total Israeli blockade for the 50th consecutive day. Safadi underscored the urgent need for a lasting ceasefire and the unrestrained delivery of humanitarian aid.
Safadi also reviewed developments in Syria and Lebanon, calling for regional and international efforts to bolster stability and security. He stressed the need for supporting Lebanon's sovereignty and maintaining the ceasefire, while urging international engagement in Syria's reconstruction and the lifting of sanctions.
Earlier in the day, Safadi met with a delegation from the French Senate, including Vice-President Loïc Hervé, Étienne Blanc, chairman of the Committee for Liaison, Reflection and Solidarity with the Christians of the East, the Minorities of the Middle East and the Kurds, and Cyril Pellevat, chairman of the Jordanian-French Friendship Committee.
Safadi highlighted the steady progress in Jordanian-French relations, particularly in the economic and defence sectors, and commended the high level of coordination between the two countries on regional issues.
The discussion also focused on efforts to end the war on Gaza and ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance, with Safadi commending French President Emmanuel Macron's recent support for the recognition of the State of Palestine.
He stressed that official recognition is a vital step toward achieving a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution.
The two sides also discussed preparations for the upcoming conference co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France to support the two-state solution, which Safadi described as the only viable path to regional peace.

Energy minister inaugurates Kingdom's first industrial solar heating project
AMMAN — Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh on Monday inaugurated Jordan's first industrial solar heating plant in Al Muwaqqar Industrial City. The ministry facilitates these initiatives by integrating its equipment into the renewable energy grid, granting customs and sales tax exemptions for renewable energy and energy efficiency equipment, reducing reliance on conventional fuels such as diesel and gas, and ensuring compliance with environmental standards. Preliminary studies indicate that solar photovoltaic-based industrial heating projects can achieve a return on investment within three to five years, with overall energy savings ranging from 40 to 90 per cent of annual consumption, offering long-term cost reductions for up to 25 years. Founded in 2014, Power Source Jordan for Renewable Energy Systems L.L.C. is implementing the project. The company specialises in advanced renewable energy technologies, including concentrated solar power (CSP) and photovoltaic systems, and provides customised industrial heating solutions for steam, oil, and air, based on industrial control systems. Thermal solar systems can yield annual returns between 20 and 33 per cent, depending on fuel prices, making them a safe and promising investment. CSP systems, in particular, are highly efficient, requiring nearly half the space of PV systems to achieve the same production capacity.

CARC to issue first drone operator license this week
AMMAN — The Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC) is set to issue the first license for a drone operator this week. Speaking to the public service TV, Al Mamlaka, CARC Chairman Haitham Misto said that the new drone regulations, set for 2025 and issued in accordance with Civil Aviation Law of 2007, will allow drones to be operated for various purposes across different sectors. 'The regulations were introduced to formally organise the use of drones in Jordan, particularly for photography, advertising, and other commercial activities,' Misto said. He said that licenses will be granted only after applicants obtain necessary security clearances from relevant authorities. 'These approvals will apply not only to the applicants but also to employees involved in drone operations, as well as to the locations where the drones are stored, operated, or manufactured.' Misto added that the new regulations outline several approved purposes for drone licenses, including artistic and film production, advertising, tourism marketing, private event coverage, geographic surveying, building and facility cleaning, security surveillance, crop monitoring, spraying fertilisers and pesticides, small package delivery, and infrastructure inspection. Misto also said that companies applied for licenses to operate drones in Jordan in April. 'Three of these companies have completed the licensing process after the necessary regulatory steps were taken.' 'This progress is part of the ongoing initiatives by the National Council for Future Technology.' Misto said that the companies intend to use drones for a variety of purposes, ranging from tourism and aerial photography to surveying and even cleaning high-rise buildings.

Jordan to launch electronic passport pilot in September
AMMAN — Jordan is advancing its digital transformation agenda with the introduction of an electronic passport, set to enter its pilot phase in September. Unveiled at the Government Communication Forum under the theme 'Digital Transformation System and the Issuance of the Electronic Passport,' the initiative aims to streamline government services and enhance security standards. Director General of the Civil Status and Passports Department Ghaith Tayyib said that the new passport would feature a polycarbonate data page, embedded with invisible security elements to prevent forgery and tampering, in line with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. Citizens would be able to apply for the e-passport through the Sanad application or the department's electronic services portal, with approved passports delivered by Jordan Post within 72 hours. Officials say the process would improve efficiency and reduce administrative burdens for citizens both inside and outside the Kingdom. Tayyib described the September pilot phase as a 'qualitative leap' in Jordan's digital service delivery, highlighting the government's commitment to modernising procedures and aligning with global technological advancements. The department also noted broader achievements in digitalisation and civil documentation. Over 135,000 identification cards have been issued to children of Jordanian women married to non-Jordanians, facilitating access to government services and strengthening civil rights. Under Royal directives supporting the resilience of Jerusalemites, the department has also delegated the Sharia Court in Jerusalem to process applications, resulting in 116,000 passports issued to city residents. Currently, the Civil Status and Passports Department provides 25 electronic services, covering roughly 80 per cent of its annual transactions. The e-passport is seen as an extension of this digital expansion and a cornerstone of Jordan's future service framework, Tayyib said. By integrating advanced security features with digital accessibility, the e-passport project reflects Jordan's wider ambition to embed technology in governance while upholding citizens' rights and meeting international obligations.
