
Minister calls for continued public engagement to improve services

MIRI (April 28): State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin calls upon residents to continue providing feedback on services rendered by local authorities and government agencies to help improve public service delivery.
He emphasises that regular engagement is vital to ensuring that the people's needs are addressed effectively, giving assurance that councillors and community leaders are committed to assisting with any issues raised while working closely with relevant departments to seek practical solutions.
The Senadin assemblyman delivered this message during a 'Mobile Service 2U' session held at Pin Fook Cafe and Morsjaya Commercial Centre here yesterday.
The outreach programme, a weekly initiative by the Senadin Service Centre, was personally led by Lee, who is also the Senadin assemblyman.
The morning's team comprised councillors and community leaders from the Senadin branch of Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) including Councillor Dato' Victor Lau, Councillor William Sim, Councillor Hiung Chien Yi, Kapitan Chong Khee Fah, and Jeffery Phang.
Throughout the session, the team engaged with residents, business owners, and stall operators, listening to concerns and collecting feedback on neighbourhood issues, many of which were earmarked for referral to the Miri City Council (MCC) for follow-up action.
'This initiative underscores a proactive and people-centric approach to governance, enabling issues to be identified and addressed more swiftly through face-to-face communication.
'Regular contact with the people not only builds trust but ensures public voices are heard directly by decision-makers,' stressed Lee.
In addition to addressing local concerns, the service team also provided guidance on the Senior Citizen Health Benefit (SCHB) application process, assisting eligible senior citizens with understanding and applying for benefits.
The event also featured the distribution of the Senadin Service Centre's 2025 Emergency Contact List, which was wekll-received by the community.

‘Ombudsman must have bite to be effective'
PETALING JAYA: Sufficient authority and manpower must be given to the person appointed to the government's planned ombudsman office to be effective, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. Lee, who is a member of the Malaysian Integrity Institute, said this must include a workforce that is both skilled and experienced at identifying the merits of complaints sent to the ombudsman. 'These assistants must be experienced enough to distinguish the credibility and significance of each complaint themselves before bringing it to the attention of the ombudsman. 'This will enable them to better identify the areas that need to be resolved in a ministry or government department,' he told The Star. He added that the ombudsman must also be given enough authority and power to fully resolve any credible complaints, regardless of which ministry or government department is involved. Lee said this includes the ombudsman having the authority and power to direct the identified ministry or government department to rectify the issue related to a complaint. 'These powers must be part of any ombudsman law that is passed through Parliament, making it so the ombudsman is given his power by an act of Parliament. 'They should also have the authority to launch their own investigation and take action if they feel the reply or action taken by the government authority is unsatisfactory,' he said. Lee also recommended that any ombudsman selected should be from the judiciary due to them not only being experienced, but also their independence. 'They are the perfect candidates as they are trained and have practiced impartiality for their entire careers. 'Regardless of who is selected, they must be from an independent authority and Parliament should be given the rights to decide the terms and conditions that a selected ombudsman must have,' he added. Lee also called on the Prime Minister's Department to hold consultations with consumer associations and non-governmental organisations for their suggestions and views before drafting any ombudsman law. He also said such an ombudsman should be tabled in Parliament at least before the end of this year to better serve the people as the current government heads into the last few years of its administration. 'It was promised in the opposition's manifesto and should be a priority, especially as the Public Complaints Bureau (BPA) has proven to be ineffective due to it mostly serving as a messenger between the government and the people's grievances,' he said. This comes after the Prime Minister's Department legal affairs division (BHEUU), the agency drafting the ombudsman law, told the The Star it is considering the proposal for the ombudsman to take over the functions of BPA and the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission. BHEUU also said it expects to table the Bill which will establish the Malaysian Ombudsman's office in Parliament by some time this year.

It's done: Lawmakers passing the Bill to launch special investigations into Yoon's order at the National Assembly in Seoul. — AP The liberal-led legislature overwhelmingly passed Bills to launch special investigations into former president Yoon Suk-yeol's short-lived imposition of martial law in December and criminal allegations against his wife, targeting the ousted conservative a day after his liberal successor took office. The National Assembly also passed a Bill to initiate an independent investigation into the 2023 drowning death of a marine during a search-and-rescue operation for flood victims, an incident the Democratic Party, which holds majority, accuses Yoon's government of covering up. The Bills previously had been vetoed by Yoon during his term and by South Korea's caretaker government after his Dec 14 impeachment. President Lee Jae-myung, a Democrat who won Tuesday's snap election triggered by Yoon's removal from office, is expected to sign the Bills. Many members of the conservative People Power Party refused to participate in the votes, which took place after one of the party's lawmakers accused the liberals of being driven by vendetta. Kim Yong-min, a Democratic Party lawmaker, said the conservatives were effectively defending Yoon's imposition of martial law by repeatedly opposing investigations into it. 'That's why they failed to win public support and were rejected by voters in the presidential election,' he said in a speech. Lee, who drove the legislative efforts to impeach Yoon, pinned his presidential campaign on unity, promising not to target conservatives and calling for an end to political polarisation. Yet Lee has vowed a full investigation into Yoon's martial law imposition and the allegations surrounding his wife, moves that could overshadow the new government and inflame tensions as Yoon faces a high-stakes rebellion trial carrying a possible death sentence. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office has indicted Yoon on charges accusing him of masterminding a rebellion and enacting martial law as an illegal bid to seize the legislature and election offices and arrest political opponents. Liberals have insisted independent investigations into Yoon are essential, saying probes by prosecutors, police and an anti-corruption agency were inadequate and hampered by Yoon's refusal to cooperate. The Bills calling for independent investigations into Yoon's martial law decree and criminal allegations involving his wife both passed by a vote of 194 to three. RM162bil in projects bring over 53,000 jobs to Johor
Lee says Johor is attracting more high value-added activities such as semiconductors, petrochemicals and data centres. INVESTMENT projects have created more than 53,000 job opportunities in Johor between 2022 and 2024. State investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said Johor attracted 1,761 projects between 2022 and 2024, with a total committed investment value of RM162.2bil. These projects resulted in the creation of 16,762 jobs in 2022, 19,053 jobs in 2023 and 17,949 jobs in 2024, bringing the three-year total to 53,764 direct jobs. 'These figures reflect only the investment sector and exclude jobs in construction, logistics, business services and retail,' he said at the state assembly sitting. He was responding to a question from Fauziah Misri (BN-Penawar), who asked how the state ensured that investments benefitted locals in terms of employment and economic development. Lee said the state government was committed to ensuring that all incoming investments generate quality, high-skilled job opportunities for Johoreans while also boosting the state's economy. 'With our competitive cost structure and strong infrastructure, Johor is now attracting more high value-added activities such as semiconductors, petrochemicals and data centres. 'Data centre investments by global companies such as Microsoft and ByteDance have also helped position Johor as the largest data centre hub in Malaysia. 'This has opened up opportunities too for skilled jobs in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector.' Lee said high-impact investments also created spillover effects across professional service sectors such as logistics, banking, auditing, legal and consulting. 'For example, Mercedes-Benz has opened a regional logistics centre in Senai to serve as a parts distribution hub for the Asia-Pacific region. 'This facility does not only provide direct jobs in logistics and supply chain management, but also increases demand for support services including transport, warehousing and others.' He said Johor's tech sector has also attracted investments from companies like Wiwynn and Supermicro, which have set up manufacturing plants to support growing demand for data centres. 'These investments provide not only manufacturing jobs but also roles in research and development, engineering and project management,' he added.
