Phillies Trade Brewing? Hot Stove Heating Up Days Before Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies have some big decisions to make this week. They have a few holes on the roster, and they're expected to use the trade block to fill the spots that need upgrading. The biggest holes on the Phillies' roster are in the outfield and the backend of their bullpen. There are plenty of options for the front office to look at, but they're going to need to cut ties with some talent in the process. FanSided's Christopher Kline recently suggested the Phillies could cut ties with outfielder Nick Castellanos ahead of the trade deadline, though it might not make the most sense. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 25: Nick Castellanos #8 of the Philadelphia Phillies in action against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on July 25, 2025 in New York City. The Phillies defeated... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 25: Nick Castellanos #8 of the Philadelphia Phillies in action against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on July 25, 2025 in New York City. The Phillies defeated the Yankees 12-5. More"Even if it's not the Royals, the idea of a Castellanos trade isn't too hard to wrap one's head around. He's under contract for $20 million next season, which is a hefty price tag, but Casty's a legitimate power source in the middle of a lineup," Kline wrote. "He's also a strong culture fit in any clubhouse, bringing a palpable energy that has made him beloved in Philadelphia. "From the Phillies' standpoint, trading their one good outfielder when improving outfield depth is a top priority on the trade deadline does not quite line up. But sometimes value is value, and getting off of Casty's money would allow Philadelphia to operate more aggressively in free agency — or even in separate trades at the deadline." Cutting ties with Castellanos would save some money, but the goal is to win a World Series, and he's been a valuable piece of the team. For this idea to make sense, the Phillies would need to land at least one outfielder in return. They're expected to be in the market to add at least one outfielder, so if they can pull that off, a deal involving Castellanos could make sense. At the end of the day, the outfield is a weakness. Trading away a productive outfielder would hurt the team, even if it saves money. More MLB: Yankees Rumors: New York Urged To Pursue Intra-Division Trade For Veteran Pitcher

Yankees Predicted to Land Rockies' High-Strikeout Reliever in 3-Player Swap

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies made one trade already. How about one more before Thursday's deadline? In former Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon, the Yankees now have Gold Glove-worthy defense and a bat with upside at the position that's plagued them the most all season. Maybe the Rockies can now help with another pain point. The Yankees' bullpen has been surprisingly un-Yankees like all season. Devin Williams and Luke Weaver haven't been consistent in the late innings, and most of the other relievers have been either unreliable, injured, or both. A general view of a glove and a Colorado Rockies cap during a spring training game between the Colorado Rockies and the San Francisco Giants at the Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona. Brian Bahr The Rockies have relievers with good stuff, though it's hard to evaluate them sometimes because everyone gives up lots of runs at Coors Field. And for most of the season, Jake Bird has been the team's most successful reliever. On Monday, Ryan Garcia of Empire Sports Media predicted that the Yankees would acquire Bird, shipping infield prospect Roc Riggio and pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz to Colorado. "People might be worried about (Bird's) performance away from Coors Field this season, but it's likely that the changing pitch shapes as he goes back and forth from high altitude is affecting that, and if he pitched for the Yankees I wouldn't be worried," Garcia wrote. "He's also coming from a bottom-of-the-barrel development organization for pitching to one of the best; his already dynamic repertoire could get even better in the Bronx." Don't be fooled by Bird's 4.05 ERA; he's had a strong season to this point. He's punched out 62 batters in 53 1/3 innings of work, and he has a 3.09 FIP that indicates he'd probably have much better results in a different home ballpark. Bird comes with team control through 2028, but the Rockies would probably still be excited to get a potential lineup regular and future rotation piece for him. Will the Yankees be excited enough about his potential to make that sort of offer? More MLB: Yankees-Red Sox Trade? New York Surprisingly Interested in Boston Speedster, Per Report

Yankees 'Facing Pressure' as One of Deadline's Most Desperate Teams

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees know the pressure is on them to get the players they need at the trade deadline. Sitting 5 1/2 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays entering Monday, New York will need to put in some work to win the American League East. It's why Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly lists the Yankees as one of the baseball's most desperate teams ahead of Thursday. "It feels like this is as low as you can put the Yankees on a list like this," wrote Kelly. "There's always a ton of pressure on them. (T)hey're the Yankees." NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 27: Aaron Judge #99 of the New York Yankees looks on during the fifth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Yankee Stadium on July 27, 2025 in the Bronx... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 27: Aaron Judge #99 of the New York Yankees looks on during the fifth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Yankee Stadium on July 27, 2025 in the Bronx borough of New York City. MoreThe most historic franchise in the league is always going to receive the most pressure. However, Kelly revealed there is more to the puzzle than just the sport's history. "Where there's really pressure on the Yankees is to take advantage of one of the greatest primes that baseball has ever seen with Aaron Judge, who is 33 years old," wrote Kelly. "The Yankees have already acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon to improve their defense, but it does feel like they're one big bat short. They also need another starter and help in the bullpen." It'll take a lot more than McMahon and Amed Rosario to get the Yankees into the playoffs. The team likely needs another strong bat, a starting pitcher and a reliever. While general manager Brian Cashman is known to be aggressive every year at the trade deadline, it's unknown just how aggressive he plans to be before Thursday. If the Yankees want any chance of catching the Blue Jays, the bat and a starting pitcher must be the priority. Those need to be acquired as soon as possible for the Bronx Bombers to get them settled in at Yankee Stadium. More MLB: Cubs Pitching Target Seth Lugo Signs Multi-Year Extension With Royals
