PM Modi condoles tragic deaths at Simhachalam, announces ex-gratia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating that the loss of life is deeply painful. He extended his sympathies to the bereaved families and wished for a swift recovery for the injured. In response to the incident, the Prime Minister announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of those who perished, and Rs. 50,000 for those injured.
A devastating wall collapse during the Chandanotsavam celebrations at Simhachalam has resulted in the tragic loss of eight lives, with ten others seriously injured. The incident occurred near the Rs. 300 ticket counter, where strong winds and rain caused the structure to fail.
Rescue operations are currently underway, with personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on-site. Home Minister Anita and the District Collector have also arrived to assess the situation. Unfortunately, it is feared that additional victims may still be trapped under the rubble.
The deceased include three women, and the death toll may rise as further rescue efforts continue. The bodies of the deceased are being transported to King George Hospital.

May rain caused 35cr farm loss in Nashik
Nashik: Over 35,000 farmers across 1,469 villages in Nashik district have reported crop losses covering 12,156 hectares, resulting in a combined estimated loss of Rs35 crore due to unseasonal rain in May. According to a senior officer from the district administration, a report was prepared based National Disaster Response Funds (NDRF) guidelines and the estimated damage was sent to state govt for further action. "A total of 35,757 farmers were affected due to unseasonal rain that wreaked havoc in Nashik district. The worst-hit talukas were Surgana, followed by Peth, Satana, Dindori, and others. The loss of crops that were damaged by 33 % or more was estimated at Rs 35 crore," said the officer. Among horticultural crops, 21,084 farmers from 957 villages suffered losses on 9,494 hectares, with a total loss of Rs25.6 crore. In Satana, 3,719 farmers in 145 villages lost crops over 3,069 hectares (including 3,042 hectares of onions and 27 hectares of other crops), resulting in a loss of Rs8.3 crore. Igatpuri reported damage across 1,087 hectares (169 hectares of onions and 918 hectares of other crops), affecting 2,919 farmers in 100 villages, with an estimated loss of Rs2.9 crore. Promises unfulfilled, flooded KSRTC bus station cries for crucial makeover
KOCHI: Another monsoon season is here and it's the same old story at the Ernakulam KSRTC bus station. Located in the heart of the burgeoning city, the dilapidated bus station has remained susceptible to waterlogging for over a decade. While the demolition of the five-decade-old building that houses the station and the construction of a new terminal have hit a roadblock, the repeated promises of the KSRTC authorities to address the issue mostly remain on paper. The last of the assurances was delivered nearly two months back, when the authorities said the work to raise the floor-level of the building and the station premises and the setting up of new drains would be completed before the onset of monsoon. In fact, Ernakulam MLA T J Vinod allotted Rs 50 lakh for the purpose from the legislative assembly constituency asset development fund. The work has kicked off for sure, but is progressing at a tardy pace. 'The activities have been hampered by intermittent rain. The good thing is that the scope of the project has broadened with BPCL (Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd) contributing Rs 99 lakh. A tripartite agreement will soon be signed between BPCL, KSRTC and the PWD to implement the Rs 1.5-crore project,' the MLA told TNIE. Swanky terminal a distant dream The plan to set up a new swanky bus terminal -- modelled after the Vyttila Mobility Hub -- on 2.9 acres in Karikkamury has suffered a setback. The project was initially mooted to be implemented with the Rs 12-crore fund promised by Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML). But the KSRTC backed out following a difference over the terms and conditions that included toll for the entry of KSRTC buses into the proposed terminal. 'Despite giving land, they wanted to levy a toll on our buses. That can't be justified,' a senior KSRTC official said. Earlier, the plan was to construct a bus terminal that can be accessed by both private and KSRTC buses. The project was in the doldrums and the CSML term ended in March. While the agency's term has been extended by another year, a fresh nod from the ministry of housing and urban affairs needs to be obtained to avail funding.

Why Is Kashmir Vande Bharat Special? The Vande Bharat Express in Kashmir is specially designed to operate in extreme cold conditions, including temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. The train is equipped with heated windscreens so it automatically removes frost, improving the driver visibility in extreme cold conditions. The train has advanced heating systems to keep the vacuum system running with warm air even when the temperature goes below zero. Made under the "Made in India" initiative, the Kashmir Vande Bharat Express is equipped with advanced and modern technology and runs fully on electricity instead of diesel. The train will leave from Srinagar at 8 am, reach Banihal at 9:02 am and arrive in Katra at 10:58 am. It will depart from Katra at 2:55 pm, halt at 4:40 pm and reach Srinagar at 5:53 pm. The travel time between Katra and Srinagar will be cut by two to three hours with the Vande Bharat Express. On Friday, PM Modi will also inaugurate India's first cable-stayed bridge, the Anji Khad Bridge, and the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge.
