Shocking horror movie that caused walkouts streaming now on iPlayer
Directed by body horror maestro David Cronenberg, the film is set in a bleak future where human evolution has advanced to the stage where mankind is undergoing a series of bold mutations.
It stars Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux as a pair of avant-garde performance artists who showcase their abilities by performing grisly surgeries live on stage – removing his organs for a shocked audience.
They soon attract the attention of timid bureaucrat Timlin (Kristen Stewart), who develops a fascination with their work, proclaiming that 'surgery is the new sex.'
However, not everyone was quite so enthralled with the film's shocking acts of blood-spurting mutilation – in the real world, horrified audience members reacted by walking out of the screening during its 2022 Cannes Film Festival debut.
After airing on BBC2 last night, viewers can now see what all the fuss is about for themselves, with the film also being added to iPlayer where it can be streamed in full.

Since its release, Crimes of the Future has been favourably reviewed by critics, who contributed to its 80% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Metro.co.uk's own Anna Smith and Louise Griffin described it as 'strangely fascinating but disturbing,' while praising its 'tangible atmosphere and terrific cast.'
Meanwhile, Mark Kermode described it as 'a playful step back rather than an evolutionary leap forward,' placing it in the lower echelons of the horror giant's work.
Audiences have been even more divided, leading to a split-down-the-middle 50% Popcorn score on the review aggregator. However, those who loved it have been effusive in their praise, with user Jeffrey P calling it: 'Profound and prophetic; perhaps the greatest dystopian pseudo-sexual body-horror film ever made.'
Meanwhile, Jeff M described it as 'the single strangest movie I have seen in my entire life.'
However, others were less enthused, with Mark B calling it 'slow and repulsive,' adding: 'ugh!' and 'ick.'
The film's reaction at Cannes was equally divisive, inspiring both audience walkouts (most of which are said to have occurred within the first five minutes) and a six-minute standing ovation. More Trending
Speaking prior to its release, director Cronenberg had predicted a few people might leave the screening, saying: 'There are some very strong scenes. I mean, I'm sure that we will have walkouts within the first five minutes of the movie. I'm sure of that.
'Some people who have seen the film have said that they think the last 20 minutes will be very hard on people, and that there'll be a lot of walkouts. Some guy said that he almost had a panic attack,' the Crash and Videodrome director told Deadline.
And I say, 'Well, that would be OK.' But I'm not convinced that that will be a general reaction. I do expect walkouts in Cannes, and that's a very special thing.'

Patrick also lauded Dan's finished piece, declaring: "It's absolutely stunning and such a beautiful story behind it. "The perfect way to go from an unwanted pile of old pyjamas into this beautiful, beautiful outfit." Following his victory, Dan said: "I've just got to trust my instincts and go with it. I'm glad that I did it on this week, where it was something so personal." Viewers were moved by the story behind his design, with one commenting: "Dan that dress was absolutely amazing mate. Thoroughly deserved garment of the week." Another viewer expressed: "Really pleased for Dan," while another added: "Definitely want to give Dan a huge cuddle." Ozzy Osbourne 'was having fun' with daughter Kelly in poignant moment at funeral
Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo has shared his reflections on iconic Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne's funeral. Last month the musician – whose real name was John Osbourne – died aged 76 following a long period of living with Parkinson's and other health problems. His death certificate listed his cause of death as 'acute myocardial infarction' and 'out of hospital cardiac arrest'. Osbourne's funeral was held the following week, with an emotional funeral procession through the streets of Birmingham where his widow, Sharon Osbourne, was seen sobbing alongside their children. In a private service, Osbourne was buried on the grounds of his mansion and Trujillo has now said he believes the late rocker was 'having fun' during the funeral. The Metallica bassist was among the attendees at his late friend's private farewell service earlier this month and he reflected on the extreme weather changes throughout the day – including a sudden gust of wind that swept through as Kelly Osbourne sang for those gathered. Trujillo, who was a longtime member of Osbourne's backing band, told SiriusXM's Trunk Nation: 'It had been raining at the beginning of the service and then as it sort of progressed through the service, the weather would change and different things would happen. The supernatural mystery drama premiered on August 6 with the first four episodes – the rest of the series will be available to stream on September 3. Jenna Ortega reprised her role as the titular character, returning to Nevermore Academy for another year and 'fresh foes and woes' alongside fellow students Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) and Bianca Barclay (Joy Sunday). 'Wednesday must navigate family, friends and old adversaries, propelling her into another year of delightfully dark and kooky mayhem,' the official synopsis reads. 'Armed with her signature razor-sharp wit and deadpan charm, Wednesday is also plunged into a new bone-chilling supernatural mystery.' In fact, Variety reports that the first batch of the season has earned more than 50million views so far. According to the outlet, this matches the numbers that season one premiered with in 2022 – but for only half the number of episodes, meaning the figures could get even higher when the rest, which include Lady Gaga, hit our screens. Critics and fans alike have heaped praise on Jenna and her star-studded castmates, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Fred Armisen, Luis Guzman, Billie Piper and Gaga. It currently commands a Rotten Tomatoes score of 83%, and has been branded 'spookier than ever'. Variety's Aramide Tinubu praising: 'Full of zing and depth, the season remains just as thrilling as the first.' Lorraine Ali of the LA Times, agreed: 'It's really the performances, casting and artistic flourishes that make Wednesday a ghoulish delight.' Mashable's Belen Edwards penned: 'Ortega remains the cold, dead heart of the series – and I mean that as a compliment in tribute to Wednesday!
