Thailand continued their bid to qualify for the AFC Women's Asian Cup finals with a 7-0 demolition of Iraq in their second Group B qualifying tie at Chiang Mai's 700th Anniversary Stadium on Sunday night.
The win took Thailand to six points, level with India, who lead on goal difference, and the hosts will aim for a third win when they face Mongolia on Wednesday while Iraq play India.
The Chaba Kaew put on a better show than the first match and in the 13th minute, Pichayatida Manowang set Wirunya Kwenkasikum free to score the opener.
Pichayatida then doubled Thailand's lead in the 36th minute with a cool finish into the top left corner before Panittha Jeeratanapavibul struck from distance in the first-half stoppage time.
Thailand got their fourth goal from Karnajanathat Phomsri, who struck in the 58th minute from a counter-attacking move, before she netted again with a 65th-minute penalty.
Wirunya increased her personal tally in the 77th minute for a 6-0 lead, before completing her hat-trick with a fine header to cap an impressive outing for Thailand in the dying moments of the match.
Thailand head coach Futoshi Ikeda praised his players' composure after his team's victory in their second match of the qualifiers for Australia 2026.
"After the first match, we had only two days to recover and prepare again. We focused on helping the players recover physically and get ready for the match," said Ikeda. "Everyone performed well. There were quite a few changes, but we stuck to our playing style."

Thawatchai sets sights on elusive SEA Games football gold

New Thailand U23 national team coach Thawatchai Dumrong-ongtrakul has vowed to end the Kingdom's eight-year barren run at the SEA Games in December this year. Thawatchai was speaking to the media after the national youth team reported for a training camp on Wednesday to prepare for the Asean U23 Championship in Indonesia. Thailand are scheduled to play their first game of the regional event against Timor Leste on July 19 followed by a clash with Myanmar three days later. Thawatchai has replaced Japanese coach Takayuki Nishikaya, whose contract was terminated earlier this month after the Thai U23 side lost all of their five matches during his nine-month reign. "We don't have much time to prepare for the tournament in Indonesia, but we will do our best," said Thawatchai, a former Thailand international. "Our most important assignments this year will be the AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers in September and the SEA Games in December in Thailand. "Our first task will be to try our best to qualify for the 2026 Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia." Thailand will host the Group F games of the September event, taking on Malaysia, Lebanon and Mongolia. Thawatchai added: "We have not won the SEA Games gold medal since 2017 when we last triumphed in Malaysia. We must win the title this time. "Once again, our main opponents at the SEA Games will be Vietnam. Indonesia will also be among the contenders for the gold medal in December." Meanwhile, PTT Public Company Limited has presented a cheque of 25 million baht to the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) to support its activities. FAT president Nualphan Lamsam received the first half of the annual sponsorship from PTT Executive Vice President for Corporate Reputation and Social Responsibility Meena Supavivat at a ceremony on Wednesday.

Football Association of Thailand agrees to let Ikeda stay as Chaba Kaew coach

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) is keeping faith in Japanese coach Futoshi Ikeda despite the national team's failure to make it to the AFC Women's Asian Cup finals in Australia next year. After a meeting, the FAT confirmed on Monday that Ikeda will continue to coach the Chaba Kaew. Thailand were denied a place in Australia 2026 after they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of India at Chiang Mai's 700th Anniversary Stadium on Saturday night. The victory helped India end the qualifying tournament with a perfect 12 points in Group B of the qualifiers as former champions Thailand missed out on the finals. The annual meeting of the FAT executive board committee agreed to let the Japanese tactician continue as the coach of the national women's team, the association's president Nualphan Lamsam told media on Monday. "We have the Asean Women's Championship in Vietnam next month and the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand in December, so we think it will be good for the team to stay under Ikeda," added Nualphan. Buriram sign new players Reigning Thai League 1 champions Buriram United have further strengthened their squad by signing four new players for the new season. Goalkeeper Korraphat Nareechan has moved to the Thunder Castle from Lamphun Warriors, while Pathompol Charoenrattanapirom from Port, and Singapore star Ilhan Fandi and Shinnaphat Leeaoh, both from BG Pathum United, have also joined the club. Top-flight newcomers Kanchanaburi Power have also announced the arrival of Malaysia international Sergio Aguero. The 31-year-old Aguero started his career in his hometown in Argentina and has played for many Malaysian clubs, with his last team being Sri Pahang before moving to Kanchanaburi.
