Winner of the 2025 'World's Ugliest Dog' contest is crowned: Meet Petunia

Indianapolis Star15 hours ago
A hairless English-French bulldog mix is now the world's ugliest dog.
Meet Petunia, the 2-year-old pooch crowned the winner of the World's Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair on Friday, Aug. 8. The grounds are about 40 miles north of San Francisco.
The annual contest, which judges canines on their extracurricular activities and not-so-cute appearances, helps pet shelters find animals forever homes.
According to its website, the contest has taken place for nearly five decades and many of the contestants "have been rescued from shelters and puppy mills, to find loving homes in the hands of those willing to adopt."
"Dogs of all breeds and sizes have warmed our hearts and filled our lives with unconditional love," the site reads. "This world-renowned event celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique."
Last year's World's Ugliest Dog contest winner was Wild Thang, a then 8-year-old Pekingese from Oregon.

The fair announced Petunia took home the first-place trophy, according to The New York Times and ABC7 in San Francisco.
Petunia lives in Oregon with her owner, Shannon Nyman, both outlets reported, adding rescuers first found the dog "in the chaos of a backyard breeder and hoarder" in Las Vegas. Luvable Dog Rescue, a non-profit organization in Oregon, relocated her.
"She's the most wrinkled 2-year-old I have ever seen," one of the judges told the TV station.
Her imperfections earned her $5,000 as well as being featured on upcoming limited-edition cans of MUG Root Beer, one of the contest sponsors.
After winning the title, the pooch also appeared live on "Today" on Monday, Aug. 11, alongside handler Shannon Nyman.
USA TODAY has reached out to contest officials and Nyman for comment.

Is the viral Salt Hank French dip sandwich worth the price and wait?

Salt Hank French Dip sandwich at Salt Hank's in New York City – Photo courtesy of Casey Clark Last week I was strolling around New York City and saw a huge line of people waiting to get into a restaurant, so I went to check it out. It turns out viral recipe developer and cookbook author Henry Laporte (who goes by Salt Hank on social media and has accumulated millions of followers) has opened a sandwich shop. This isn't your traditional sandwich shop. There's only two items on the lunch menu: a French dip sandwich and fries. (Well, there are some non-alcoholic drink options too, but that's it.) Since Salt Hank's opened earlier this summer, people have been lining up and waiting anywhere from one to three hours for a Salt Hank French dip sandwich. I spoke with a hostess named Quinn, who said people start lining up around 10 a.m., and they often sell out of the coveted sandwiches by 3 p.m. So far, the most French dips they've made in a day is 304. She said people have flown in from as far away as Australia to try the Salt Hank French dip. Advertisement What's the Salt Hank French dip? Salt Hank French dip sandwich and shoestring fries – Photo courtesy of Casey Clark The Salt Hank French dip sandwich features thin slices of prime rib from Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors on a crispy Frenchette Bakery baguette. The meat is topped with provolone cheese, seven-hour caramelized onions, and an aioli seasoned with horseradish, chive, and roasted garlic. The sandwich comes with a savory au jus. You can see hundreds of mouthwatering social media posts from patrons. I'd say the sandwich is bigger in real life; videos and photos simply don't capture its thickness. Where is Salt Hank's? Exterior of Salt Hank's on Bleecker Street in New York City – Photo courtesy of Casey Clark Salt Hank's is located at 280 Bleecker Street. You'll know when you're getting close, because you'll see a long line down the block. I waited 45 minutes to get inside and then an additional 10 minutes for my sandwich. You order at the bar and then take a seat or take your food to go. The inside of Salt Hank's is pretty small with only a few tables, so if you're banking on eating there, you might have to wait to sit down. How much is the Salt Hank's sandwich? Interior of Salt Hank's in New York City – Photo courtesy of Casey Clark The Salt Hank French dip is $28 — or $34 with a side of shoestring fries. Daniel Rubenfeld, formerly at Thomas Keller's chophouse TAK Room, heads up the kitchen, and LaPorte often can be seen preparing sandwiches alongside his employees. Viral recipe developer Henry Laporte in his element – Photo courtesy of Casey Clark Upon my first bite, my eyes quite literally almost rolled to the back of my head — it was that good. The prime rib was moist and juicy and melted right in my mouth. The au jus softened the bread, which made the sandwich even easier to eat. I loved the caramelized onions, which added extra sweetness and texture. I wish there had been a bit more cheese, but that's more of a personal preference.

Denzel Washington Takes On New York City In Spike Lee's ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Trailer

The official trailer for the newest Spike Lee Joint has been released. Starring Denzel Washington, Highest 2 Lowest finds the acclaimed actor in a fight for his family and his morals. The film, directed by Lee, is an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 Japanese kidnapping drama High and Low, which is loosely based on the 1959 novel King's Ransom by Ed McBain (Evan Hunter). According to the official description, Washington leads as a titan music mogul, widely known for having the 'best ears in the business.' The film marks the fifth collaboration between the actor and director, with the last standing as Inside Man, released back in 2006. Their previous works are Mo' Better Blues, Malcolm X, and He Got Game. Highest 2 Lowest is written by Alan Fox and Lee, and developed and produced by Apple and A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures. It debuted out of competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and will hit theaters on Aug. 15, 2025, before arriving on Apple TV+ on September 5. The film also stars A$AP Rocky, Ilfenesh Hadera, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, and Ice Spice. 'Yeah, don't sleep on A$AP,' Lee exclaimed of the Harlem rapper's major acting debut. 'In this film, Denzel and A$AP go toe to toe. 'What's interesting is, even before I got involved with this film, I always thought that A$AP looked like he could be Denzel's son,' he details. 'There's a big resemblance. So when you see it on the screen, it adds an element of father and son. Don't sleep on A$AP. Don't sleep on A$AP.' Watch the trailer for Highest 2 Lowest above. We will ‘be ready': After government rebuke, Resorts World Sentosa CEO discusses future of integrated resort

Resorts World Sentosa will "be ready" when Singapore's Gambling Regulatory Authority considers its casino license renewal in 2026, the company's CEO Lee Shi Ruh told CNBC late last month. In November 2024, Singapore's gambling agency announced it was renewing the integrated resort's casino license for two years, instead of three, citing "unsatisfactory" tourism performance from 2021 to 2023. The announcement came after Resorts World Sentosa had pledged to invest $6.8 billion Singapore dollars ($5.3 billion) to renew and expand the integrated resort. The truncated license renewal has not changed Resorts World Sentosa's expansion or investment plans, Lee said. The company opened two new attractions in 2025, Minion Land at the Universal Studios Singapore theme park, and the Singapore Oceanarium, which replaced the integrated resort's older S.E.A. Aquarium. "This year is really a game-changing year for us," she said. "Over the next few years... to 2030, we will be continuing to launch new attractions." In announcing the two-year license renewal, the Gambling Regulatory Authority considered Resorts World Sentosa's ability to "develop, maintain and promote" itself as a compelling tourist destination. When asked which of these areas the resort is focused on, Lee said: "The big push for us is really transforming Resorts World Sentosa into a premium lifestyle destination." Shopping, once a top priority for travelers in Asia, is not a priority in the resort's transformation, said Lee. "Our focus is really into experiences," Lee said. The decision to replace a "Madagascar" movie-themed area of Universal Studios Singapore with Minion Land was, in part, related to the universal appeal of the characters in the "Despicable Me" franchise, she added. "Minions stood out because ... this yellow character is very resonate to all ages of visitors, and all around the world because of the language that they use. It resonates from Asia to Europe to America and everywhere else. So to us, there's a common language we can use," she said. Minions speak their own language, called Minionese, which incorporates elements of English, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Tagalog, among others, according to the "Despicable Me" fandom website. Resorts World Sentosa is also planning to open new hotels, including The Laurus, a luxury hotel designed like a "collector's home" in Singapore, that is set to open later in 2025, Lee said. In coming years, the integrated resort is planning to launch Super Nintendo World inside Universal Studios Singapore, as well as an elevated waterfront lifestyle complex with a 700-room hotel, hiking trails and a 289-foot light sculpture, she said. "The waterfront lifestyle complex is really going to enhance the appeal of the Greater Southern Waterfront," she said. The complex is a "brownfield project," which will be visible from mainland Singapore. Lee declined to comment on whether the planned lifestyle complex will have gaming facilities.
