Alibaba DAMO Academy collaborates with United Nations and hospitals to advance AI for good initiatives
Announced at the AI for Good Global Summit 2025, this collaboration will facilitate expert exchanges and knowledge-sharing mechanisms between the two organizations. It will also support initiatives of AI for Health, AI for Climate, and AI for Science through a series of joint activities, including online lectures and offline events. Additionally, both parties plan to explore cooperation in robotics and embodied intelligence, while deepening their work in AI and video technologies, contributing to global technological development, solution deployment, and standardization.
As part of its broader commitment to advancing AI capacity building, Alibaba DAMO Academy has also joined the AI Skills Coalition, a global, open, trusted, and inclusive platform led by the United Nations. As a founding member, Alibaba DAMO Academy will support the Coalition's mission to empower governments, businesses, and organizations—particularly those in less developed countries—to harness AI for sustainable development and good governance.
Advancing AI for Health in Singapore and Saudi Arabia
To advance AI for Health initiatives globally, Alibaba DAMO Academy has also announced a collaboration with NHG Health in Singapore to drive innovation in AI-powered medical research and clinical applications at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), one of the country's largest multi-disciplinary hospitals.
This partnership leverages the combined expertise of both organizations in medical AI technology and scientific research. The focus is on enhancing early screening for conditions such as pancreatic cancer, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, breast cancer, and kidney masses. Through joint research, development, and external validation, the collaboration aims to expand access to AI-driven early detection tools, ultimately supporting the advancement of precision medicine and enabling more timely and effective treatments.
Additionally, Alibaba DAMO Academy will collaborate with Abdul Latif Jameel Health, the health division of the Saudi Arabia-based multinational enterprise Abdul Latif Jameel Group, to explore opportunities in AI-assisted diagnosis for cancers such as pancreatic, gastric, and esophageal cancer, chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and fatty liver disease, as well as acute conditions including acute aortic syndromes and pulmonary embolism.
This collaboration seeks to extend the benefits of medical AI to more people and regions by combining Alibaba DAMO Academy's cutting-edge technology products with Abdul Latif Jameel Health's extensive global network.
Recognition of DAMO Academy's Innovation in AI for Good
Alibaba DAMO Academy's technological innovations have been acknowledged in the United Nation's AI for Good Innovate for Impact Interim Report 2025.
Among its frontier AI solutions is Baguan AI Weather Forecasting , which generates specialized weather indicators for applications in power energy, agricultural meteorology, low-altitude weather forecasting, and regional renewable energy planning.
Another notable achievement is the DAMO PANDA system (Pancreatic Cancer Detection with Artificial Intelligence), which uses deep learning to detect and classify pancreatic lesions with high accuracy using non-contrast CT scans. Recently, it developed DAMO GRAPE (Gastric Cancer Risk Assessment Procedure with Artificial Intelligence), a deep-learning framework that analyzes 3D non-contrast CT scans to detect and segment gastric cancer with high sensitivity and specificity. These innovations exemplify Alibaba DAMO Academy's commitment to leveraging AI for societal benefit and advancing the frontiers of science and healthcare globally.

Airlines in Middle East to test GPS alternatives as 'jamming' risk hits navigation
Airlines and governments in the Middle East have been invited to take part in the ongoing testing of a new navigation technology that some experts say is significantly more reliable than Global Positioning Satellite systems. SandboxAQ, a developer of products involving quantum technology and artificial intelligence, recently heralded the 'commercially available prototype' of the technology they're calling AQNav. This comes as GPS, the standard navigation system around the world, has become a victim of its own success, and is increasingly vulnerable to GPS jamming which can renders the navigation assistance unusable. GPS jamming − also known as GPS spoofing − became a prominent problem in June during the air war between Israel and Iran. Smartphone users across the Middle East reported anomalies with their GPS locations, which were wildly inaccurate. GPS has gained immense popularity thanks to the ease it can be incorporated into technology. But this ubiquity is becoming a growing vulnerability. SandboxAQ recently announced that Acubed, an Airbus company, completed what they're describing as 'rigorous real-world testing' of the touted GPS alternative, AQNav, which uses the magnetic field of the Earth along with quantum sensors that pick up the magnetic signals with the help of special AI software. Tests lasted five months and involved more than 100 flights that took place across 'diverse geographies and conditions'. According to SandboxAQ and Acubed, the test results show that AQNav 'consistently beat' the US Federal Aviation Administration's en route navigation standards. 'Pilots need to be able to trust their navigation systems,' Luca Ferrara, general manager for SandboxAQ's navigation business unit, told The National. 'When they can trust it, they're less stressed, they have less of a cognitive workload and they don't have worry about dealing with GPS loss,' he explained. SandboxAQ says that AQNav is rooted in and inspired by nature, and utilises the Earth's magnetic field, similar to how birds and other animals use it to navigate. That approach, combined with Sandbox AQ's proprietary AI software and use of hardware, gives it significantly more resilience and reliability compared to GPS, Mr Ferrara said. SandboxAQ also points out that unlike GPS, it doesn't connect to the internet, cloud or satellites. In the recent tests from Acubed, AQNav logged more than 44,000km, 'surpassing the Earth's circumference, without relying on GPS'. Mr Ferrara said more testing will now take place with hopes of eventually readying the system to be used on commercial airlines. SandboxAQ hopes to gain more insight into how to best position the magnetic censors used by the system on various aircraft, along with other details. Testing will help establish whether users would transfer navigation data to an existing computer on the plane, or a separate computer not connected to the internet or any network on board. This system is known as air-gapping, which is broadly viewed as more secure. 'Do we want it to pipe the data into the flight management computer or do we want it to go in an air-gapped way?' asked Mr Ferrara. He said Sandbox AQ currently has contracts with the US Air Force, and he expects the new navigation technology to first be adopted by defence and national security agencies, and then commercial entities. Through more testing, followed by a 'constructive dialogue' with aviation regulators around the world, Mr Ferrara said there's hope that commercial airlines will also be able to implement the system. Given the Middle East's increasingly strong presence in commercial aviation, with countries like the UAE playing a crucial role with international travel, it makes sense to push for testing among the region's airlines. 'We're looking for forward-leaning partners in the aerospace sector within the Gulf region to collaborate with,' Mr Ferrara said. He said the company is in discussions with several companies, and hopes to continue with those efforts given the Middle East's tourism footprint and globally recognised airline brands.

Seychelles: President Ramkalawan Inaugurates New Baie Lazare Health Centre
President Wavel Ramkalawan, accompanied by First Lady Linda Ramkalawan and Vice-President Ahmed Afif, officially inaugurated the newly constructed Baie Lazare Health Centre on Monday afternoon, marking a significant milestone in the district's healthcare infrastructure development. The modern healthcare facility replaces the original health centre built in 1938. Entirely funded by the Government of Seychelles at a cost of approximately 9.2 million Seychelles rupees, the project demonstrates the administration's commitment to enhancing community healthcare services. Construction commenced in February 2024, with temporary healthcare services provided at Baie Lazare Primary School to ensure uninterrupted medical care for residents. The comprehensive health centre offers an extensive range of services with particular emphasis on preventive care, early detection, and health promotion. The facility features state-of-the-art amenities including public health services, physiotherapy units, dual consultation chambers, an observation unit, an emergency unit, equipment sterilization facilities, antenatal care and family planning consultations, pharmaceutical services, and storage facilities. Additionally, the centre is equipped with an advanced dental service unit featuring a dental X-ray system with high-end equipment generously sponsored by the German Dental Association, demonstrating international partnership in Seychelles' healthcare advancement. Minister for Health Peggy Vidot expressed great honour at the facility's opening, emphasizing its significance beyond mere infrastructure. "The inauguration represents more than just a new building, it symbolizes a transformative chapter in the lives of individuals and families within the district," Minister Vidot remarked.
