Rowdy Rathore 2 Shelved? Akshay Kumar–Sonakshi Sinha Sequel Faces Major Roadblock
Back in 2012, Akshay Kumar stormed the big screen with his larger-than-life cop avatar in Rowdy Rathore, delivering the now-iconic line, 'Don't angry me!" The film, also starring Sonakshi Sinha, quickly cemented itself as one of Bollywood's most entertaining mass entertainers of the decade. Naturally, when reports of a sequel surfaced, fans were thrilled at the prospect of revisiting the action-packed universe. However, it now seems that the much-anticipated Rowdy Rathore 2 has been shelved for good.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, producers Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who had been working on the sequel for nearly three years, have decided to drop the project altogether. The roadblock reportedly came from Disney India, which holds partial intellectual property rights to the original film, and has been hesitant to commit to the sequel.
The script for Rowdy Rathore 2 was penned by veteran screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, known for his blockbuster work in films like Baahubali and RRR. However, instead of being scrapped entirely, the makers are now reworking the script into a fresh standalone cop drama—one that carries the same mass appeal and high-octane energy but without the Rowdy Rathore brand name.
Industry sources suggest that the new project will be directed by acclaimed Tamil filmmaker P.S. Mithran, best known for Irumbu Thirai, Hero, and Sardar. The film is expected to go on floors in early 2026, with casting currently underway. Interestingly, actor Sidharth Malhotra, who was earlier being considered for the lead in the sequel, is no longer attached. The team is reportedly scouting for a younger star to embody the role of a fearless, larger-than-life police officer.
For the uninitiated, Rowdy Rathore itself was a Hindi remake of the 2006 Telugu hit Vikramarkudu, directed by S.S. Rajamouli. In the Bollywood version, helmed by Prabhu Deva, Akshay Kumar played a double role—honest cop ASP Vikram Rathore IPS and small-time conman Shiva—while Sonakshi Sinha played Shiva's love interest, Paro. The film's masala mix of action, comedy, and romance turned it into a box-office juggernaut.
With Rowdy Rathore 2 officially shelved, fans are left wondering if this marks the end of the franchise—or simply the beginning of a reimagined cop saga. Until an official announcement comes through, the future of this once-celebrated action universe remains uncertain.

Earlier, it was slated to release in theatres on September 18. Taking to their Instagram handle, 7Screen Studio (official production house of the film) shared the release date of the film. The movie is slated to release in theatres on October 17. The film stars Pradeep Ranganathan, SJ Suryah and Krithi Shetty in the lead roles. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander. Coolie box office collection day 8: Rajinikanth's Coolie has been in theatres for a week now. What started off with a bumper, record-breaking opening has slowly shown a major dip in collections over the week, given that the first-day excitement died down and the film did not meet fans' expectations. As per the latest update on Sacnilk, the film has now crossed ₹228 crore at the domestic box office. Coolie shows no growth The latest box office report on Sacnilk points out that the Lokesh Kanagaraj-directorial has minted as low as ₹5.26 crore on its eighth day of release. It is the lowest single-day collection forthe film so far. Coolie had a bumper opening last Thursday with ₹65 crore. It was the second-best domestic opening for any Tamil film, behind only Vijay's Leo ( ₹66 crore) and ahead of Rajni's own 2.0 ( ₹60 crore). The strong opening day put Coolie on track for a solid opening weekend, but it fell short in the next few days, showing no growth even on its first Sunday, collecting ₹ 35.25 crore. From Monday onwards, the film started its downward spiral. The overall collections of the film now stands at ₹228.76 crore. About Coolie Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie stars Rajinikanth in the titular role. The action thriller also features Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj and a cameo from Aamir Khan. Anirudh Ravinchander has composed the music for the film.
