Things were looking up for Hamilton after qualifying on Saturday, where he secured fifth - his joint best result.
But soon into the race his teammate Charles Leclerc was snapping at his heels and he was told to give his place up to the Monegasque driver after just nine laps.
It was a suckerpunch moment for the Brit who finished in sixth after Max Verstappen's 10-second time penalty.
He had been overtaken by his old Mercedes teammate George Russell and, to rub more salt in the wounds, Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.

He said after the race: "Well what do you want me to say? I've had a really bad day and have nothing to say. It was a difficult day,
'There's nothing else to add to it. It was terrible. There's no point explaining it. It's not your fault. I just don't know what to say."
When told whether the team can find some answers, he added: "I'm sure they won't - it was probably just me."
Hamilton's former teammate Nico Rosberg said: "it's hard to watch" the Ferrari driver struggle.
He added: "Sunday was a horrible day for him because he was just slow out there, which is very unusual,
"Yes, sometimes he's off in qualifying but in races he's usually really awesome and the race was shockingly bad.
"He doesn't have answers either. Was there damage on the floor? These floors are so sensitive and there can always be a bit there and you lose a lot of time.
"When you don't have any answers, it's really tough as a driver then you see your team-mate race on their way to third place on the podium. In light of the whole season he's had so far, it's a very dark situation."

Ronnie O'Sullivan's 'phenomenal' ex-practice partner retires from snooker at 53
Anthony Hamilton, who was once described as "phenomenal" by Ronnie O'Sullivan, has called time on his 34-year snooker career after failing to regain his tour card One of Ronnie O'Sullivan's favourite practice partners has announced his retirement from snooker after 34 years at the top level. Anthony Hamilton turned pro in 1991 - a year before O'Sullivan and fellow greats John Higgins and Mark Williams - and has been a constant presence on the World Snooker Tour ever since. Although he may not have reached the heights he was capable of, Hamilton's career was still marked by notable achievements, including a ranking title win at the 2017 German Masters and four World Championship quarter-final appearances. Following a loss of form and his tour card, Hamilton attempted to regain his place at Q-School but was defeated by Germany's Umut Dikme, prompting his decision to retire at 53. Hamilton said: "It felt strange playing there, knowing that these could be your last couple of matches. But I'm not going to miss it because the last few years have not been that enjoyable." However, his love for the game remains. He added: "I probably love it again now more than I used to. I appreciate it more. I watch it more now than I used to. I love it more and I love players now because I know what they're about. "Back in my prime, snooker wasn't always on my mind as I had other interests. But now I'm older, I've rediscovered my love for the game and I'm eager to see what the future holds." Hamilton was once praised by O'Sullivan, who described him as "phenomenal" and a "great practice partner" in 2021. The Rocket said: "He was phenomenal, still is, just goes ton, ton, ton, ton. It's good for you to play someone like that because it rubs off on you. He was a great practice partner. "He's won the German and had a very good career. It's a compliment, but with his game, he should have won more, really, because he's a very heavy scorer. That's why he's still competing, because of his scoring power. "Plays the right shots, plays the right game, plays in the right spirit. A bit like [Anthony] McGill maybe, plays the game nicely, good cue action, everything's nice. When he does bring his best form, he's like that every day in practice. "If he could bring that regularly to the match table, he'd have won multiple titles. I don't know why he hasn't because he's got bottle, he's got everything. "It's a strange one. Some players you look at and think they're too good not to have won more. He's definitely one of those." O'Sullivan, four years Hamilton's junior, looks set to play on following his comeback at the World Championship, where he made the semi-finals despite complaining of cue issues. Exactly how often fans will see the Rocket next season is unclear, though. Speaking following his Crucible defeat to eventual champion Zhao Xintong, he announced plans to quit the UK for the Middle East. The Rocket, who has a snooker academy in his name in Saudi Arabia, added: "I'll still try and play snooker but I don't know what the future looks like for me really. "I'm moving away soon so I'll just see how it goes. There's a lot of more important things in life to worry about than a game of snooker."

Lisandro Martinez makes Man Utd transfer decision after surprise Napoli links
Lisandro Martinez has no intention of leaving Manchester United despite becoming the subject of interest from Serie A champions Napoli, according to reports. Martinez is still working his way back from a cruciate ligament injury he suffered in February and may not feature again until 2026. Despite that, reports in Italy suggested that the Argentine international was attracting interest from Napoli as they look to bolster their defensive options. The Italian giants enjoyed great success buying from United last summer, recruiting Scott McTominay for a cut-price fee of £25million. McTominay then went on to play a guiding role for Antonio Conte's side, scoring 12 times as Napoli saw off Inter Milan to win the title. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. However, Napoli are unlikely to be able to repeat the trick this time around, with the Daily Mail reporting Martinez is more than happy at Old Trafford and has no desire to move. Prior to his injury, the 27-year-old had established himself as a key part of Ruben Amorim's defence and is seen as one of the experienced leaders within the United squad. While Martinez may not join, however, Napoli could have more success trying to sign Alejandro Garnacho who has fallen out of favour with Amorim. The Serie A side were interested in signing Garnacho in January but were unable to reach an agreement with United at the time. The Red Devils have since lowered their asking price to £60m, but Garnacho appears to have his heart set on staying in the Premier League amid interest from Chelsea. More Trending Garnachp is one of several players that could leave Old Trafford this summer as United look to raise funds for another costly rebuild. Antony, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are all set to leave the club when they return from their respective loans. The club will also reportedly entertain offers for Kobbie Mainoo, while Rasmus Hojlund could be set for a move to Italy, after Inter were credited with an interest in the young striker. That's according to Football League World, who claim the 29-year-old is not viewed as priority target by the Blades this summer. McBurnie spent five years at Bramall Lane after completing a £17m move from Swansea City back in 2019. The striker is certainly on the radar in SA1, and it's understood he would be open to coming back should the opportunity arise. Article continues below However, the prospect of pulling on a Swans shirt again is likely to rest on finances, and that could prove a stumbling block. On Sunday, journalist Alan Nixon claimed Hull City and Spanish side Celta Vigo were also keeping a close eye on developments. Milan chief jets in for Modric talks AC Milan sporting director Igli Tare has been spotted on his way back from a trip to Croatia, having reportedly offered Luka Modric the chance to join the Serie A giants. Modric is set to bring the curtain down on an incredible 13-year stint at Real Madrid after the upcoming Club World Cup this summer, and speculation has already started to swirl over his next move. Despite investing in Swansea City, the prospect of him slotting into Alan Sheehan's midfield next season seems remote, but the 39-year-old is still keen to carry on playing for at least another year. According to Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, Modric has now been offered a 12-month deal with an added option. "The Milan sports director considers Modrić an important piece to start from, due to his experience and mentality," Moretto wrote on X. "We are waiting for the footballer's final yes." Content cannot be displayed without consent Cooper front-runner for Boro job Steve Cooper has emerged as the early front-runner to succeed Michael Carrick as Middlesbrough boss. Carrick was dismissed from his post on Wednesday, and the process of finding his successor has already begun. It's understood current Swans boss Sheehan was previously considered as a possible replacement before the Irishman's permanent appointment in south Wales, with Boro one of several clubs impressed by his work guiding City to what was a strong end to the season. Now, it seems former Swans manager Cooper could well be the man to take over, with our colleagues at GazetteLive stating the Welshman is "held in high regard by officials at the Riverside". Cooper's been out of work since leaving Leicester City, and reports elsewhere recently suggested he turned down several Championship roles in a bid to stay in the Premier League. Nevertheless, he could now be persuaded to take a role in the second tier this time around. Cabango - Allen farewell was emotional Ben Cabango admits he was emotional in saying farewell to Joe Allen, following the midfielder's decision to retire from football. Allen called time on his career at the end of the season, signing off at the age of 35, and team-mate Cabango says it was a call that was some time in the making. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here. "He did tell me earlier in the season, about halfway, that he was thinking about it," he revealed. "I thought because he started playing more consistently towards the end he might change his mind, but he said it was time to go. Article continues below "What a player, what a guy, and he will be missed at club and country." Allen's final game was a 3-3 draw at home to Oxford United on the final day of the Championship season, which also happened to be Kyle Naughton's final game in a Swans shirt. "The last game was emotional but it was a good send-off for Joe and Kyle [Naughton}," Cabango added.
