The Madrid giants look to rope in the Spaniard in an attempt to replace Croatian legend Luka Modric, who departed the Capital City side at the end of a thirteen-year stint.
Rodri's current contract with City runs till 2027, but Pep Guardiola and Co. are working on finalising a contract extension.
Rodri's Rise
Rodri, who had youth spells at Rayo Majadahonda, Atletico Madrid and Villareal, broke through the ranks of the Yellow Submarine to make his senior debut in the year the year 2015. After three years at the Estadio de la Ceramica, the Spaniard made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the year 2018.
He clinched the UEFA Super Cup with the Rojiblancos the same season, before joining Manchester City for a fee of £63m. Rodri has also served as the beating heart of the Spanish national side that clinched the UEFA Euro 2024 title and the UEFA Nations League crown in the 2022-23 campaign. However, just ten minutes later, Rivaldo Lozano's strike equalised the score at 1-1. As the match neared its conclusion, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner made the difference once again by orchestrating a move with Uruguayan Luis Suarez. This collaboration set up Weigandt, who ultimately netted the winner in the sixth minute of stoppage time, securing the win for his side. New Inter Miami recruit Rodrigo De Paul also made his debut, joining national team captain Messi, who led Argentina to their third World Cup triumph in Qatar. Fritz beats rain, Carballes Baena, to advance in Toronto
Second-seeded Taylor Fritz struggled with three rain delays and a stubborn Spanish opponent on Wednesday, pulling out a tight 7-5, 7-6 win over Roberto Carballes Baena at the ATP Toronto Masters. Fritz beats rain, Carballes Baena, to advance in Toronto The second-round match was halted repeatedly by light rain, with the final 18-minute pause coming just as the second-set tiebreaker was about to start. But Fritz, winner of Stuttgart and Eastbourne titles this season, quickly sprinted to victory before heavier rains were expected to set in. The American was far from pleased with a win which was marred by 45 unforced errors and confessed that he has not yet felt on his game in Canada. "Even in practice I'm having a hard time putting the ball into the court," he said. "But I'm happy to get through this one. "Everything is not feeling great, it's tough to control the ball. "Since I've been here it's been absolutely brutal. But I have another match to figure it out and hopefully I can play myself into the tournament." Fritz's fourth-seeded compatriot Ben Shelton had no complaints after earning his first career win over gritty Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3. Shelton had dropped two prior meetings with 37-year-old qualifier Mannarino but said he was able to vary his serve to get over the line this time. "This win was huge for me. He's a shotmaker, he can take the racquet out of your hands," Shelton said. "I've played well against him in the past and come up short, he can make things really difficult." American Frances Tiafoe squeezed out a win after more than two and a quarter hours against Japan's Yosuke Watanuki, hailing his opponent's fighting spirit after a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 triumph. "He can hit a winner on any shot," Tiafoe said. "I needed some luck in those last two sets to win." Tiafoe managed just 19 winners to the 45 of his 158th-ranked foe, but now lines up against Australian Alexsandar Vukic, who defeated Briton Cam Norrie 6-3, 6-7 , 6-3. Andrey Rublev, runner-up in Canada a year ago to Alexei Popyrin, won his 250th career match on hardcourt as he beat France's Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-3. The sixth seed needed four match points to advance after 86 minutes and now plays Italian Lorenzo Sonego, a 6-1, 6-4 winner over China's Bu Yunchaokete. Wimbledon quarter-finalist Flavio Cobolli of Italy delivered four aces in the final game of a rain-interrupted match to clinch a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Canadian Alexis Galarneau. But Canadian Gabriel Diallo came out on top against his Italian opponent, beating Matteo Gigante 6-3, 7-6 to next face Fritz. Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime suffered another early disappointment, losing his opening match in his home Masters for a third straight year as he fell to Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 6-4. Former top 10 ranking regular Stefanos Tsitsipas, now 30th in the world, continued a downward slide with a 6-4. 4-6, 6-2 loss to Australian Christopher O'Connell. Alex de Minaur, winner in Washington on Sunday, defeated Francisco Comesana 6-4, 6-2. "It was not pretty by any means," Australia's de Minaur said. "The wind and rain made it quite tough. I'm happy I was engaged and focused from the first point to the last. "Backing up a good week is the toughest ask in tennis. You don't have a lot of time to enjoy the moment after a week of emotional highs. "You have to find a way to re-set and do it all over again." str/bb This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Rusty Bagan wary of a youthful MSC
1 2 Kolkata: Mohun Bagan SG will begin their Durand Cup campaign with an all-Indian side and against a "not so easy" Mohammedan SC here on Thursday. Not long ago Bagan's participation in Asia's oldest knockout football tournament was in doubt against the backdrop of a yet-to-be-resolved uncertainty over the Indian Super League . As a result, the reigning ISL Shield and Cup winners' senior team hit the ground running only a week ago, without Spanish head coach Jose Molina and any of his foreigners. It has been learnt that Molina is scheduled to land here in the wee hours of Friday and defender Tom Aldred is expected to arrive the following day. They conceded a last-gasp goal to go down 1-2 to debutants Diamond Harbour FC in their opening match two days ago. The Bagan assistant coach Bastab Roy — who would boss the team's dugout in Molina's absence at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday — was in the stands to get a first-hand glimpse of the young black-and-white brigade's fight and he knew that a tricky test awaits his team. "A key feature of Mohammedan SC is that they are a young team and they don't depend on any individuals and play as a team," Bastab noted during a press conference on Wednesday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Are you from Egypt? From that standpoint, we need to work harder to win the match. It's not going to be easy." Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith — who would lead the team on Thursday — echoed his coach's sentiment. "They (Mohammedan SC) have already played, so their fitness level will be better. No, we can't take the match as an easy one," the ISL's Golden Glove-winner said. If early season rustiness is a worry, key defender Subhashis Bose is still undergoing his rehabilitation and attacker Manvir Singh is a doubtful starter for the opener. Five days ago, defender Dipendu Biswas and attackers Kiyan Nassiri and Suhail Bhat were pressed into service for the CFL derby but Bagan ended up losing it 2-3 to East Bengal FC. Bastab now wants his youngsters to stand up and be counted for a positive start to the new tournament. "The Durand Cup format is such that only the group winner and two second-best teams will advance to the quarterfinals. So, one loss may jeopardize your chances," Bastab said. For Mohammedan SC coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo, it's about building a better future for the team. "I'm happy with the way the young players are giving their best. Results may not be in our control. The way we conceded the goal (against DHFC) in the last minute was extremely unfortunate and luck was also not on our side. But we've to accept this and move on," Mehrajuddin told reporters. "Against Mohun Bagan, we'll try to minimize the mistakes we had committed (against DHFC) and give them a fight," he added.
