Rusty Bagan wary of a youthful MSC
2
Kolkata: Mohun Bagan SG will begin their Durand Cup campaign with an all-Indian side and against a "not so easy" Mohammedan SC here on Thursday.
Not long ago Bagan's participation in Asia's oldest knockout football tournament was in doubt against the backdrop of a yet-to-be-resolved uncertainty over the
Indian Super League
.
As a result, the reigning ISL Shield and Cup winners' senior team hit the ground running only a week ago, without Spanish head coach Jose Molina and any of his foreigners.
It has been learnt that Molina is scheduled to land here in the wee hours of Friday and defender Tom Aldred is expected to arrive the following day.

Mohammedan SC, facing a transfer ban, are also playing the tournament without any foreigner. They conceded a last-gasp goal to go down 1-2 to debutants Diamond Harbour FC in their opening match two days ago.
The Bagan assistant coach Bastab Roy — who would boss the team's dugout in Molina's absence at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday — was in the stands to get a first-hand glimpse of the young black-and-white brigade's fight and he knew that a tricky test awaits his team.
"A key feature of Mohammedan SC is that they are a young team and they don't depend on any individuals and play as a team," Bastab noted during a press conference on Wednesday.

"They have already played a game while we are going to play our first one. From that standpoint, we need to work harder to win the match. It's not going to be easy."
Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith — who would lead the team on Thursday — echoed his coach's sentiment.
"They (Mohammedan SC) have already played, so their fitness level will be better. No, we can't take the match as an easy one," the ISL's Golden Glove-winner said.
If early season rustiness is a worry, key defender Subhashis Bose is still undergoing his rehabilitation and attacker Manvir Singh is a doubtful starter for the opener.
Five days ago, defender Dipendu Biswas and attackers Kiyan Nassiri and Suhail Bhat were pressed into service for the CFL derby but Bagan ended up losing it 2-3 to East Bengal FC. Bastab now wants his youngsters to stand up and be counted for a positive start to the new tournament.
"The Durand Cup format is such that only the group winner and two second-best teams will advance to the quarterfinals. So, one loss may jeopardize your chances," Bastab said.
For Mohammedan SC coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo, it's about building a better future for the team.
"I'm happy with the way the young players are giving their best. Results may not be in our control. The way we conceded the goal (against DHFC) in the last minute was extremely unfortunate and luck was also not on our side.
But we've to accept this and move on," Mehrajuddin told reporters.
"Against Mohun Bagan, we'll try to minimize the mistakes we had committed (against DHFC) and give them a fight," he added.
DURAND CUP: WEDNESDAY'S RESULTS
Group A: Namdhari XI 2 (Bhupinder 79, Cledson 85) South United FC 0.
Group E: TRAU FC 1 (Raj Singh 58) Neroca FC 1 (Arunkumar Singh 90+6).

AIFF names Jamil men's football team coach, tenure likely to be 'two or three' years
Khalid Jamil on Friday became the first Indian to become the head coach of the national football team in 13 years as he pipped Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic to grab the coveted post. The last Indian to serve as the head coach of the national men's team was Savio Medeira, who held the position from 2011 to 2012. A former India international and currently in charge of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, Jamil, 48, was selected by the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) executive committee. 'The AIFF ExCo has picked Khalid Jamil as the new head coach but his tenure has not yet been decided. We will do that after discussions with him and among ourselves. We also have to discuss with him his salary,' AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey told PTI after the meeting. 'Jamil wanted a three-year tenure. Some ExCo members said it could be one year or two years. But it will be a long-term tenure, may be two or three years, and performance-based,' Chaubey said. The Executive Committee approved the appointment from a three-member shortlist submitted by the AIFF Technical Committee. The other two contenders were former India head coach Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic, who previously managed the Slovakia national team. In a statement issued by the AIFF, the governing body confirmed that Dronacharya Awardee coaches Bimal Ghosh and Armando Colaco, and Dhyan Chand Awardee Shabbir Ali, alongside Technical Committee chairperson IM Vijayan were heavily in favour of appointing an Indian coach at the helm for the first time in 13 years. 'In the presence of AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President NA Haris, Treasurer Shri Kipa Ajay, the members of the Executive and Technical committees, along with both Dronacharya Awardee coaches Bimal Ghosh and Armando Colaco, and Dhyan Chand Awardee Shabbir Ali, the AIFF's Technical Director Syed Sabir Pasha and National Teams Director Subrata Paul presented a SWOT analysis of all the three shortlisted coaches – Khalid Jamil, Stephen Constantine, and Stefan Tarkovic,' read the statement by the AIFF.

India vs England, 5th Test: Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna become brothers of destruction, script new milestone on Day 2
Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna (AP Photo) Day Two of the fifth Test between India and England produced a breathtaking spectacle of seam, swing, and collapses, with 15 wickets falling, the most in a single day's play in the ongoing series. This number overtook the previous high of 14 wickets, which fell on Day Four of the second Test at Lord's. What started as a day favouring the batters, with England's openers blazing away in the morning session, quickly turned into a bowler's paradise. India's pace attack, led by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, sparked a stunning turnaround. England, who were 109 for 1 at lunch chasing India's first-innings total of 224, were bowled out for 247 in the final session. Siraj and Prasidh both took four wickets apiece, as India clawed back into the contest with relentless discipline and hostile seam bowling. The drama didn't end there. India's second innings began under fading light and rising tension, and the visitors struck quickly again. KL Rahul fell cheaply, and Sai Sudharsan was trapped in front late in the day. Draw India win England win Too close to call By stumps, India had reached 75 for two wickets in just 18 overs, taking the total to 15 wickets for the day, a statistic that reflects not just the quality of bowling, but the unpredictability of the pitch and match situation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Featuring Brigade Ebony™ at Brigade Showcase 2025 | Aug 8–10, Sheraton Grand, Brigade Gateway Brigade Group Learn More Undo This dramatic swing in momentum echoed the gripping nature of the series itself, where no session has felt entirely safe for either side. The seam-friendly conditions at The Oval, combined with high-stakes pressure in a series decider, brought out both the brilliance of the pacers and the vulnerability of top-order batters. With three days still to go and conditions continuing to assist the bowlers, this record of 15 wickets in a day might not stand for long.
