Kyler Murray was quickly blamed but was Drew Petzing's play call questionable?

USA Today5 days ago
Drew Petzing and Kyler Murray are building a imperfect pattern of pass play problems.
With 10:17 to go in the first quarter, Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing had seemed to be putting together an ideal scoring drive in the team's preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. Running back James Conner had just gained seven yards on an inside zone run play that had Petzing's offense operating in plus territory at the Chiefs' 17-yard line. Yet, Petzing's shift from single-back formation to the pistol made it obvious to Chiefs mastermind defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo that Petzing was considering a pass play.
Petzing could have committed to the ground attack, but his desire to get his quarterback Kyler Murray a passing touchdown overrode his practicality. With only 17 yards of field to cover, the Chiefs' linebackers and defensive backs dropped back into a Cover 3 and were well in position to obstruct any throwing lane Murray was beguiled to believe he had.
Petzing's use of 12 personnel allowed for physicality to be a strength on offense during the eight-play drive. Mix this, and Conner's determination to get yardage in the red zone, and Murray likely wouldn't be spending his birthday month receiving public scorn after another interception. Yet, here we are.
Murray's 21 touchdown passes in 2024 were neighbor to his 11 interceptions. Thus, a 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio isn't elite, and it's time to take a deeper look into why Murray is yielding these stats when his talents are undeniable. Sure, Murray may have made a bad read on his interception throw to Chiefs safety Jaden Hicks, but Petzing's play call on 1st and 10 from the 17-yard line should have been to run the football. Respectfully.

Patrick Mahomes Haters Will Love This Scathing Chiefs Prediction

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have been dominating the NFL for over a half-decade now, making five Super Bowl appearances and winning three championships across the last six seasons. However, this past February, the Chiefs ran into a major roadblock. Kansas City was absolutely hammered by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, as Mahomes was battered behind his team's shaky offensive line all night and the Eagles' offense punctured what had been a stout Chiefs defense. More news: Chiefs Get Major Update on Rashee Rice's Looming Suspension For the first time in a while, Kansas City showed some considerable vulnerability, and it has many wondering about whether or not the Chiefs will be able to make another Super Bowl run this coming season. Well, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith doesn't seem to envision a trip to San Francisco in February for Kansas City, noting that he feels the Chiefs' reign of terror may have come to an end. Photo by Aaron J. Thornton/Getty Images "They've been pretty dominant," Smith said on First Take. "At some point in time, people are saying it's got to end, and I think this is the year that it does." Outside of the Cincinnati Bengals making the Super Bowl during the 2021-22 campaign, Kansas City has been top dog in the AFC for quite some time now. The Chiefs have long had an aura of invincibility surrounding them, and that was on full display last season when they managed to go 15-2 in spite of the fact that they could have just as easily been something like 10-7. Much of Kansas City's success in 2025 will hinge on the status of wide receiver Rashee Rice, who will be eligible to play in Weeks 1-4, but may be facing a lengthy suspension afterward due to legal issues. It's also important to note that Rice is coming off a torn ACL. That places that much more pressure upon fellow receivers Marquise Brown (who missed most of last season) and Xavier Worthy to step up, and rookie wideout Jalen Royals may have a significant role, as well. More News: Rashee Rice In Danger of Being Replaced as Patrick Mahomes' No. 1 WR The question is whether or not any team in the AFC West is ready to dethrone Kansas City. The Los Angeles Chargers probably have the best chance, but they still seem to be a couple of pieces away. As far as the rest of the conference goes, the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills will comprise legitimate threats, as per usual, and the Pittsburgh Steelers could also represent a scary ballclub depending on how Aaron Rodgers looks. Will Taylor Swift be at Travis Kelce's preseason game vs. Seahawks?

It's getting to be that time again. Travis Kelce continues to play NFL games in 2025, and his girlfriend Taylor Swift has had some time to cheer him on at Kansas City Chiefs games. She was there a few last season, including playoff games and -- of course -- the Super Bowl. MORE: Photos of Taylor Swift going through all the emotions for Chiefs-Texans So the question is: will she be there for the Chiefs' second preseason matchup on Friday between the Chiefs and the Seattle Seahawks? Given that it's a preseason game and that it's on the road -- remember, Swift didn't attend road games last season -- it's probably a no for this one, even though they were together for the epic New Heights podcast we all loved. But we'll see!
