NHAI finalises contract for strengthening of 55-km Thanjavur-Pudukottai highway stretch
The work has been awarded under the performance-based maintenance contract for the first time in Tamil Nadu under which the contractor would take care of maintenance of the 55-km stretch for five years as a single package. The project is to be executed at a cost of about ₹45 crore, said a senior NHAI official.
Preliminary work pertaining to road strengthening had commenced and the project was expected to be completed in one year, the official said. The strengthening work was to be taken up on the highway stretch in view of the wear and tear it had suffered over a period of time.

The 75-km stretch had been strengthened at a cost of ₹35 crore. The work, which commenced in June 2024, was completed last month. Some road furniture work was to be carried out that includes establishment of additional sign boards, the official said.
Detailed project report
The NHAI is in the process of preparing a Detailed Project Report for four-laning of the Tiruchi - Karaikudi national highway stretch covering Tiruchi, Pudukottai and Sivaganga districts.
The DPR is expected to be ready by November-December and would be sent to the NHAI headquarters in New Delhi for sanction of funds.

Deaths due to accidents on national highways have marginally reduced since 2023: Govt data
NEW DELHI: Deaths due to accidents on national highways have marginally reduced. The road transport ministry on Wednesday informed Rajya Sabha that 53,372 lives were lost in road crashes on the NH network in 2023 and this reduced to 52,609 during last year. Govt data showed that in 2022, fatalities on NH were 61,038. In a written reply, the ministry said the govt has published the road accidents report annually up to 2022. 'Further, electronic detailed accident report (eDAR) portal has been developed, a central repository for reporting, management and analysis of road accidents across the country,' said the ministry. Quoting eDAR data, it said that till June this year, 26,770 lives were lost in crashes on NHs. The ministry said that the NHAI has installed the advanced traffic management system (ATMS) on high-traffic density NHs and national expressways such as Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Trans-Haryana, Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Delhi Mumbai Expressway. 'ATMS has provisions for various electronic enforcement devices which help in speedy identification of incidents on highway stretches and effectively monitor highways, thereby improving the response time of the on-site assistance,' it said. Responding to a separate question, the ministry said road safety audits have been conducted for 1.1 lakh km NHs during the last three years.

Cams to curb speed on busy Kisan Path
Lucknow: The Lucknow Outer Ring Road, also known as Kisan Path, is getting a high-tech Traffic Monitoring Camera System (TMCS) to enhance security measures and monitor speed and movement The installation is being done by the National Highways Authority of India. NHAI is expediting the project to improve traffic management and law enforcement on the busy stretch. The system will allow the surveillance of speed and movement of about 30,000 vehicles that use the Ring Road daily. Officials said a modern control room, proposed near the Ring Road, will be integrated with the police control room. This setup will provide real-time monitoring of hit-and-run incidents, and other activities, enabling the police to respond and take action quickly. Installation of the camera cables and optical fibre is underway and the project is expected to be completed by Mar 2026. The agency responsible for building the Outer Ring Road will also handle its maintenance and repair for the next five years. Officials said the hi-tech vigil will encourage responsible driving and reduce the number of road accidents, especially those caused by speeding heavy vehicles. Currently, the speed limit on Kisan Path is 60 km/h for heavy vehicles and 80 km/h for light vehicles. However, speeding violations have been frequently reported. Once operational, the system will automatically capture details of speeding vehicles, and challan will be sent directly to the registered address of the vehicle owner. Repeat offenders may also face legal action.
