Deaths due to accidents on national highways have marginally reduced since 2023: Govt data
Govt data showed that in 2022, fatalities on NH were 61,038.
In a written reply, the ministry said the govt has published the road accidents report annually up to 2022. 'Further, electronic detailed accident report (eDAR) portal has been developed, a central repository for reporting, management and analysis of road accidents across the country,' said the ministry. Quoting eDAR data, it said that till June this year, 26,770 lives were lost in crashes on NHs.
The ministry said that the NHAI has installed the advanced traffic management system (ATMS) on high-traffic density NHs and national expressways such as Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Trans-Haryana, Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Delhi Mumbai Expressway.
'ATMS has provisions for various electronic enforcement devices which help in speedy identification of incidents on highway stretches and effectively monitor highways, thereby improving the response time of the on-site assistance,' it said.

Mesh panel falls, safety concerns again at Sadar-Mankapur flyover

No injuries were reported in the incident. The protective mesh was installed to prevent two-wheeler riders from falling off the flyover. Before it crashed onto the road, it was precariously dangling in the strong wind. Motorists passing beneath the structure at Chhaoni Chowk near Achraj Towers were alarmed, especially as the location has seen multiple serious accidents in recent years. One of the accidents took place on the same flyover in August 2020, when 36-year-old nurse Manjusha Dalal died after a speeding SUV hit her scooter. Dalal, who worked at a private hospital in Dhantoli, fell nearly 25 feet from the elevated stretch near Nelson Square and succumbed to her injuries. Despite several eyewitnesses and a police chase, the SUV driver fled the scene. Constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the flyover has long been flagged for inadequate safety measures, particularly at its sharp curve at Chhaoni Chowk. The presence of vegetation from crevices also hints at water stagnation and long-term structural neglect. Traffic police said they will write to NHAI again, urging reinforcement of safety installations and stricter speed regulation. A senior NHAI official said after seeing the photos it seems that some vehicle must have hit it, leading to its damage. "However, I will soon send officials to the spot and find out what happened and get it repaired urgently," said the official.

New toll rates announced for Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway: Here's everything travellers need to know
In a recent update, motorists on the Karnataka stretch of the upcoming Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway will have to soon pay toll charges. The new rates have been finalised by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the 71-kilometre section between Hedigenabele (near Hoskote) and Sundarapalya (near Kolar Gold Fields). The same expressway was unofficially open seven months ago but the toll collection was not there. According to a news report by Times Of India, the toll collection is expected to begin soon. Let's have a look: Toll placement There will be four toll plazas at Hedigenabele, Agrahara, Krishnarajapura, and Sundarapalya. It's a distance-based toll system. This means that the charges will be proportionate to the section used by the vehicle. Toll Rates (Cars and Jeeps) For a one-way trip between Hedigenabele and Sundarapalya, drivers will have to shell INR 185 for cars and jeeps. The return journey is priced at INR 275. Interestingly, travelling in the reverse direction (Sundarapalya to Hedigenabele) will cost little more which is INR 190 one-way and inr 285 for a round trip. INR 620 has been set for heavy trucks and buses (one-way from Hedigenabele) while the return will cost INR 930. In the Sundarapalya to Hedigenabele direction, charges will be INR 635 and INR 955, respectively. High-speed travel with home guards for safety The expressway is designed for high-speed travel. It will allow speeds of up to 120 km/hr. No two-wheelers are allowed on the route. To implement this rule, NHAI seeks permission to deploy home guards at vulnerable entry points and toll plazas. About the expressway The Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway is among the country's most ambitious highways. It will reduce travel time between Chennai and Bengaluru significantly. Once operational, the expressway is expected to cut down the current travel time from around 6–7 hours to just under 4 hours.
