Bhubaneswar: Travelling on the NH-16, which connects Bhubaneswar with Cuttack, has become a safety hazard due to non-functional street lights and inadequate maintenance, raising concerns among commuters and pedestrians.
The situation has become particularly critical during the ongoing Shravan month, with thousands of kanwariyas (devotees) walking barefoot along the highway carrying water pots to various Shiva shrines in the twin cities. The dark stretches has made their journey increasingly dangerous.
"This is absolutely harrowing. I walked to the Shiva shrine in Laxmi Sagar for the second time last Sunday, and the street lights were defunct.
Vehicles passing dangerously close make it a nightmarish experience," said Krushna Puhan, a kanwariya from Phulnakhara.
The problem is compounded by unauthorised vehicle parking during night and stray cattle occupying the main carriageway. With restrictions imposed by commissionerate police on heavy vehicles between 5am and 10pm, trucks enter the city limits after 10pm only.
Girija Hota, a shopkeeper at Palasuni, witnessed a recent accident involving cattle.

"I saw two bulls fighting in the middle of the highway. A speeding truck hit one of them due to the darkness," he said.
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said they regularly service the priority stretch. "We will investigate any issues with the street lights and address them promptly," said Suraj Singh, NHAI (project director), Bhubaneswar circle.
Traffic authorities promised action. "We will discuss the matter with both NHAI and the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation to address road safety issues on the highway," said an officer of the traffic wing of commissionerate police.
With increasing traffic volume and pedestrian movement, especially during festivals, the demand for proper lighting and their maintenance has become more urgent, according to residents and road safety experts.
"There is a need for a comprehensive safety audit of the highway stretch and implementation of strict enforcement measures against traffic violations. The situation has really worsened due to poor lighting and it needs to be addressed on priority," road safety activist PV Ramana said.

Potholes, poor road surface leads to snarls at RTO Chowk

1 2 Pune: Long queues of vehicles have become a common affair at the RTO Chowk on Raja Bahadur Mill Road, irking commuters. Several potholes and rough road surfaces are hampering vehicular flow, and the snarls become chaotic during rush hours. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out pothole repairs recently; however, commuters reported that the work was of inferior quality, and the tarring was likely to loosen and pose a risk, especially for two-wheeler riders. The road surface is also bumpy, resulting in vehicles moving slowly and causing congestion," said Anup Jadhav, who travelled from RTO Chowk towards Pune Station. Saket Pujari, a regular visitor to the RTO office, said traffic near the RTO junction has become chaotic. "Two stretches—Pune Station to RTO Chowk and Sangam Bridge to RTO Chowk—witness long queues of vehicles almost every day. There are significant instances of wrong-side driving. Those entering and exiting the RTO premises are facing a lot of trouble. Despite the RTO office being nearby, the authorities are not able to find solutions to the problem," Pujari said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Japanese hair growth method Hair's Rich Learn More Undo Commuters have been demanding an alternate road link from the railway's land towards the Juna Bazaar Chowk, and the widening of the existing rail underpass to reduce the traffic burden at the chowk. Officials from the PMC's road department said they are initiating pothole repairs and resurfacing at all major junctions, including RTO Chowk. "We undertook resurfacing of the road recently. However, if there are complaints regarding potholes, our team will inspect the road stretches to carry out repairs," a civic official said.

Kavach 4.0 to safeguard Mathura-Kota rail section

Lucknow: Indian Railways on Wednesday commissioned the indigenous Automatic Train Protection System, Kavach 4.0, on the Mathura-Kota section of the high-density Delhi-Mumbai route. Highlighting the achievement, railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Kavach 4.0 is a product of Indian innovation. Developed and manufactured indigenously, the system was approved by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) in July 2024. It is designed to prevent train collisions by automatically controlling speeds and applying brakes when necessary. It operates at Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL 4). The system was first tested and deployed in South Central Railway in 2018, and the advanced version, Kavach 4.0, was approved in May 2025 for speeds up to 160 kmph. The complexity of Kavach is comparable to setting up a telecom network. It includes RFID tags every km, telecom towers with optical fibre connectivity, and integrated systems on locomotives and stations. These components communicate in real-time to ensure safe train operations, even in low visibility conditions like fog. So far, railways has laid 5,856 km of optical fibre, installed 619 telecom towers, equipped 708 stations and 1,107 locomotives with Kavach, and deployed trackside equipment across 4,001 route km. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo Over 30,000 personnel have been trained, and IRISET has partnered with 17 engineering institutions to include Kavach in their curriculum. Despite curbs, heavy vehicles ply during peak hours in Keonjhar dist, cause traffic jams

1 2 Keonjhar: Despite restrictions on movement of trucks on different roads in Keonjhar district, heavy vehicles continue to ply in Champua sub-division, causing severe traffic jams and at times leading to accidents. On June 19, the district collector had ordered restriction on movement of trucks at a meeting in Champua. "Exercising the power conferred by Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, I have restricted the movement of heavy vehicles except those carrying essential commodities on the roads in Joda, Barbil and Champua areas," Keonjhar district collector Vishal Singh, who is also the chairman of district road transport authority, said. The roads where violations have been taking place include Rugudi to Beliepada, Bileipada to Tarini Chowk, Joda municipality, Barbil municipality and Champua NAC areas. Heavy vehicles are restricted from 8 am to 11 am and 3 pm to 8 pm on Rugudi to Beliepada and Bileipada to Tarini Chowk stretch, as well as Champua NAC area, while the restriction in Joda and Barbil municipality areas is from 6 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 8 pm. According to the administration, tippers and trucks do not follow a proper line, causing congestion and create a lot of problems for the people, particularly school-going children and patients. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Advancing AATD-LD Medicine with Research Takeda WeConnect Learn More Undo "Traffic jams are common. Many times school buses and ambulances get stuck in the truck jam," said social activist Rasananda Behera. "Despite the restriction, many trucks, tippers and trailers are flouting rules and plying during the restriction period. The administration, truck association, and mining lessees are equally responsible for this man-made traffic problem. They must take a decision to check the problem," said Sushil Cainth, a human rights activist from Barbil.
