Pralhad Joshi inaugurates BESS in Bengaluru; ₹5,400 cr additional VGF coming soon
Renewable Energy
,
Pralhad Joshi
, on Friday inaugurated a
Battery Energy Storage Systems
(BESS) manufacturing facility in the Bidadi Industrial Area, Bengaluru. With an annual manufacturing capacity of 5 GWh, this facility stands as one of the largest and most advanced BESS plants in the nation.
The newly inaugurated facility has a fully automated cell-to-pack assembly line, signaling a move towards precision-driven, high-quality production with minimal human intervention.
This advanced manufacturing capability is expected to significantly contribute to grid stability, facilitate renewable energy integration, manage peak demand, and aid in frequency regulation.
During the inauguration, Minister Joshi emphasised the critical role of reliable energy storage in achieving India's ambitious target of 500 GW of
non-fossil fuel capacity
by 2030. "As more renewable energy comes into our grid, having reliable storage is more important than ever," he stated.
Further demonstrating the government's commitment to energy storage, Minister Joshi announced plans to roll out an additional ₹5,400 crore as viability gap funding (VGF) to support the establishment of 30 GWh of battery storage systems.
This new allocation comes on top of the existing ₹3,700 crore under the current VGF scheme, which has already facilitated the implementation of 13.2 GWh of BESS projects.
"As India rolls out the VGF scheme for battery storage and works with stakeholders across sectors to grow the storage market, having world-class manufacturing like this will be very important," the minister remarked. "It will help meet rising demand, reduce imports, and make our power grid more efficient. Our renewable capacity is growing fast: we are adding 25–30 GW every year."
Highlighting the immense potential of the sector, Minister Joshi cited the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), which projects the country's energy storage sector to attract a staggering ₹4.79 lakh crore investment by 2032.
Furthermore, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) estimates a project requirement of 411.4 GWh of energy storage systems by 2032, comprising 175.18 GWh from Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) and 236.22 GWh from BESS.
"I believe that India can become a global manufacturing hub for BESS, from batteries and inverters to software and control systems," Minister Joshi added. "Between 2022 and 2032, India plans to add over 47 GW of battery storage capacity, with a total investment of around ₹3.5 lakh crore."

Donald Trump says US will likely set global tariff rate at 15% to 20%
United States President Donald Trump on Monday said he would likely introduce a global baseline tariff between 15% and 20% for countries that have not negotiated separate trade agreements with Washington. 'For the world, I would say it'll be somewhere in the 15% to 20% range,' Trump told reporters alongside United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland. 'Probably one of those two numbers.' He added that Washington would soon notify about 200 countries of their new 'world tariff' rate. The range is a significant increase from the 10% baseline tariff that Trump had announced in April. The announcement comes amid negotiations between the US and countries seeking lower tariffs, including India, ahead of the August 1 deadline set by Trump to conclude trade talks. 'We're going to be setting a tariff for essentially the rest of the world,' the US president said on Monday. 'And that's what they're going to pay if they want to do business in the United States. Because you can't sit down and make 200 deals.' Trump's so-called reciprocal tariffs had taken effect on April 9. Hours later, however, he reduced the rates on imports from most countries to 10% for 90 days to provide time for trade negotiations. In February, Washington had already imposed a 25% tariff on a range of products from Canada, Mexico and China. The US president had repeatedly said he intended to impose a reciprocal tax on several nations citing high tariffs the countries impose on foreign goods. The tariff plans led to concerns of a broader trade war that could disrupt the global economy and trigger a recession. Washington had set August 1 as the deadline to conclude trade talks. On Monday, Trump also said that the US had recently finalised trade deals with Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines. He added that these countries had previously restricted American imports. 'Japan opened up to our cars, even to rice. That was a big deal,' Trump said. 'The Philippines was very closed now it's open.' He said the US and Japan had agreed on a 15% tariff, and that a similar rate would apply to most goods from the European Union. He also said that Washington was still negotiating with China. 'They're tough, smart negotiators,' the US president told reporters. Earlier this month, Trump had also said that the US was very close to a trade deal with India. Trump had said on June 27 that New Delhi could sign a 'very big' trade deal with Washington soon. On July 2, the White House said that the deal was close to being finalised and would be announced soon. An Indian team led by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had visited the US in May to negotiate the agreement. Following this, a team of negotiators from the US was in India for a week in June.

Crackdown on Punjab retailers to check misuse of subsidised urea
The Punjab agriculture department is conducting checks at 2,324 urea retailers across all 23 districts of the state. The Punjab agriculture department is conducting checks at 2,324 urea retailers across all 23 districts of the state. (HT File) The checks came after direct orders from the Union ministry of chemicals and fertilisers, following concerns over a significant increase in urea sales by certain retailers. Deepinder Singh, chief agriculture officer of Hoshiarpur, who has been assigned Sangrur for checks, stated, 'We have to check 259 retailers included in the list in Sangrur district due to concern of increase in urea consumption, which has been found to be more than the previous year. We need to specifically check that the sale of urea to farmers is genuine and that it is not being used by industries, which are supposed to buy urea at a fixed price, not subsidised. If anybody is found to be using the subsidised urea, strict action will be taken against him.' The decision has been taken followed by a directive by the Union department of chemicals and fertilisers to the agriculture department of Punjab. A copy of the letter is with HT dated July 24 addressed from the Union ministry of chemicals and fertilisers to the administrative secretary of Punjab's agriculture department states: 'As part of our regular monitoring under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) framework, an analysis of urea PoS sale data for the period from April 1 to July 20, 2025, has been conducted. Based on this analysis, a list of fertiliser retailers falling in the top 10 percentile, in terms of urea PoS sales, has been identified. Furthermore, the department has also observed a significant increase in sales by certain retailers in the said period when compared to the corresponding period in 2024-25.' As per the orders, the Punjab agriculture department has been instructed to verify and check the operations and sale records of these identified retailers and submit the report by August 5. Following this, the director of the agriculture and farmer welfare, Punjab, through a letter released on July 25 stated the duties of the officials, including the chief agriculture officer and agriculture development officer. Notably, chief agriculture officers of the districts have been reshuffled. They have been asked to send an action-taken report on August 1. As per the information, the checks aim to ensure fair and transparent fertiliser distribution and to prevent any diversion or misuse of subsidised urea, a critical agricultural input.
