Asia's travel boom is back – here's where everyone's going in 2025

Time Out31-07-2025
If your passport's been feeling neglected, now's the time to blow the dust off because Asia is officially back on the global travel map.
According to the latest figures from UN Tourism's World Tourism Barometer, Asia-Pacific welcomed 13% more international travellers in early 2025 (compared to the same period in 2024), reaching 92% of pre-pandemic levels. It's the strongest the region has been since borders reopened, and we reckon that the momentum is still building.
Northeast Asia (including Japan, South Korea, and China) is leading the charge, with a massive 23% jump in arrivals compared to this time last year.
If we break it down by country though, Vietnam is the Asian destination that everyone's talking about – and flying to. The country saw a 30% jump in tourist arrivals early this year, which is pretty much in line with reports that its tourism-related search growth has overtaken other heavyweights like Thailand and Singapore. Are we surprised? Not at all – the country has long been an underrated gem, with everything from gorgeous beaches along its long coast, stunning highlands in the north, and vibrant cities with growing food, drink, and thrifting scenes.
Japan is another tourism powerhouse, recording a 23% jump in inbound travellers in the first quarter of 2025. This is perhaps to the dismay of residents in hot spots like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, who have been speaking out about the impact of overtourism on their daily lives. We're not stopping you from travelling to Japan, though; but perhaps consider quieter prefectures that offer just as much, but with fewer crowds.
UN Tourism's data highlights two other APAC destinations: Palau, a Micronesian archipelago, which saw a 20% jump in tourist arrivals, as well as South Korea, with a 14% jump in tourist arrivals.
You can see the worldwide statistics on the UN Tourism website.

Elephant tramples tourist 'who took its photo with flash on'

A tourist had to run for his life before being trampled by an elephant after apparently venturing too close for a selfie. The man reportedly trespassed in a restricted forest near the Bankapur temple in Karnataka, southwest India. He allegedly tried to take a selfie with the creature but had to flee when it turned on him after being startled by the flash. Footage taken by visitors driving through the reserve on Sunday shows the elephant shrieking as it thunders across the road to chase the tourist, identified by authorities as R. Basavaraju. As the animal bore down on him he tripped and fell, with his trousers sliding down his waist, before the elephant walked over him. The creature then returned to the wilderness, leaving him splayed out on the road having fortuitously escaped being crushed under its weight. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Witness Daniel Osorio said the elephant was eating carrots at the side of the road when the tourist approached it to take a selfie. The animal attacked him after being provoked by the sudden bright flash, according to the passer-by. Forest officials said they tracked down Basavaraju at his home in Nanjangud town, also in the state of Karnataka. He was fined 25,000 Rupees (£212) and made to record a video confession, admitting his actions stemmed from ignorance of wildlife safety rules. More Trending Basavaraju also warned other tourists not to make the same mistake. The Forest Department said: 'Such reckless stunts not only endanger human lives but also provoke unpredictable and dangerous animal behaviour.' The Indian sub-continent has at least 30,000 wild elephants – more than any other country and approximately 60 per cent of the world's entire Asian elephant population. Some days call for switching off from the real world. When the inbox is brimming and the heat outside feels relentless, a getaway doesn't sound bad – especially when it comes with a cracking view and a massage table. The Summer Spa Ritual at Banyan Tree Dubai ticks all those boxes, with a few indulgent extras thrown in for good measure. This sun-soaked daycation is available all summer, with prices starting from Dhs590 per person on weekdays and Dhs690 on weekends. What to expect? A one-hour treatment at Banyan Tree Spa, one of the largest in Dubai, at a massive 2,257 square metres. Before or after your treatment, you can also add a one-hour Rainforest Experience to your package for an additional charge of Dhs350. It's a fun hydrothermal journey (literally, like walking through rain) with vitality pools, an ice fountain and steam and sauna rooms. If lounging's more your thing, there are heated recliners and private suites, some with jacuzzis. And while you're at it, you can always peruse the menu and add on anything you fancy for a full-on pampering session. The ritual doesn't stop there. The central London hotel with skyline views and private heated swimming pool

I had the heated swimming pool all to myself CITY ESCAPE The central London hotel with skyline views and private heated swimming pool IF you want a central hotel with an amazing restaurant and on-site pool, Park Plaza Riverbank ticks all the boxes. Here's everything you need to know. 3 Here's everything you need to know about staying at the Park Plaza Riverbank Credit: 3 I had the heated swimming pool all to myself Credit: Where is the hotel? Overlooking the river Thames, Park Plaza Riverbank is a short walk from Vauxhall Station in London, or a quick bus to London Waterloo. What is the hotel like? The huge hotel is much bigger than it looks on the outside. Walking in, the dark interior makes you feel like you are in a luxury resort. From the lobby, you can check in to your room at reception as well as head up the escalators to the on-site restaurant, gym and spa. What are the rooms like? Each of the rooms are kitted out with queen or king-size beds, as well as working desks and a 49 inch Smart TV with Chromecast facilities. I loved the options of plug sockets, with EU, UK & US, and there were tea and coffee making facilities as well. Each of the bathrooms have complimentary toiletries along with a bath or shower depending on the room. Rooms start from £159. Opt for the hotel suites for floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river as well as the London Eye and Big Ben, while some even have their own massive balcony terrace with views of the skyline. What is there to eat or drink there? The hotel restaurant is a must. Best of British: London Chino Latino offers a Pan-Asian fusion with everything from sushi and dim sum to steaks and seafood. Not sure what to go for? Opt for one of three of the set menus so you can try it all, best chased by a deliciously sweet Sakura Martini, made up of gin, lychee and rose. Make sure to ask for a window seat for a beautiful sunset view. This is also where you will find breakfast, with enough hot and cold options to keep everyone satisfied. What else is there to do there? The hotel has a heated private pool which you can book free sessions. My 6:30am morning session meant I had the whole place to myself. You can follow this up with a trip to the sauna or steam room, or the gym next door. Or for £25, there is the 12th floor River View Lounge with complimentary drinks and snacks all day. But if you want to explore the nearby area, you are right in the middle of London so most of the top attractions are a short train or bus away. Is the hotel family friendly? Yes, there are a number of hotel rooms and suites that sleep up to two adults and two kids. Is there access for guests with disabilities? The hotel has Braille lifts, as well as rooms with wider guest room and bathroom doorways. There is also wheel-chair accessible lobbies, entrances and public bathrooms. Looking for a place to stay?
